If you are writing a paper I always find it best to use the biggest words in your vocabulary, but at the same time make it you. Add a touch of humor, add questions, and add examples. I always got top marks on papers because I used my knowledge but at the same time, I made it possible that the paper could be identified that I, myself, wrote it.

Exams are usually marked with reference to a mark sheet which lists the points which ought to be mentioned and the kind of discussions which should be included. Neat handwriting certainly makes it easier for the examiner to understand you but what he/she is looking for is your ability to show that you have followed and understood the course and can use your intelligence to evaluate and discuss it.
It doesn't matter how neat your handwriting is, you will NOT earn marks if you don't demonstrate what the course should have taught you. If your handwriting is illegible, however, you may not be able to make the examiner understand that you have learned the information required or that you have the necessary skills to evaluate it, discuss it and present it.

If it's a college exam, I'd think a little more than just "pretty letters" would be required. The best way to get high points is good content. Make sure you know your subject well and go into as much detail as possible, without being entirely boring.
Proof read it for any sentence structure or grammar problems religiously.
Be creative, yeah everyone says it but.... it's true.
