What is the basis of your faith?

If you are a firm believer in God what is the basis for it? Is it a family tradition? Handed down for generations? Or did something in particular happen to make you believe there is a God? What is the reason you believe? Where does your faith come from?

Greetings celticeagle .
You have presented some very good questions.
The basis of my faith is twofold: A personal relationship with God (we speak with each other, He is my Shepherd) and the Holy Bible.
My mother was a Roman Catholic and my dad was Russian Orthodox. I was raised RCC, turned satanist, then pantheist. I finally committed to Christ January 25, 1970.
What happened to make be believe. The short answer is the grace of God. However, among other things it was listening to my friend telling me about Christ, listening to Evangelist Billy Graham--who then got me interested in reading the Book of Revelation (read it four times before becoming a true Christian), people praying for me, and the gracious convicting power of the Holy Spirit.
The actual faith for a true Christian to believe comes from Christ Himself through the Holy Spirit.

my faith and belief in G-d comes from within. I know in my heart that there are many paths that lead to the Being I call G-d. others call Him by another name but He is the same Being. It wasn't handed down to me by my parents . I have had this in me since I was a little girl.

I'm a believer in that HE lives in my heart..soul..spirit.. He's not in no dam building they call a church although many people believe this. HE is always watching over us. Always walking beside us and, at times, he's carrying us when we think we can't go no further.
That said......I'm gone!!!
-wonders why on earth she's always sucked into the very thing she HATES discussing-
-glares at a certain pagan-

I really have no idea where my faith or belief comes from. I am not from a religious family and so talking about religion or God never entered conversations in my home whilst growing up. My beliefs are just something that have always been with me.

Yes I do believe in god. But people do not realize that they are only god. This statement might be quiet absurd but the fact is that, if i ask a question that ,Who invented GOD?? The answer is only humans not the animals ,trees or birds.its only human who found the word god. So i can say that humans are greater than god..So believe in yourself. What ever is happening is only for evolution .
God might be there or might not be but we are there ,so believe in things that u can see and not in things that u cannot see.

I pretty much do believe in what I can see and not in what I can't. Evolution huh? I agree. Humans are greater than God? Interesting.

My faith is not generational. My mom had some profession of faith when I was little, but what I saw did not match what I read. Dad became a Christian at 54, though he had been raised in a mainline church.Growing up, his behavior was more "Christian" than my mom's. I think the big thing with me is exposure. I was exposed to the church, there was one walking distance from us when I was young and mom wanted us to be a part of it. The people in the church loved me, and nurtured me. They answered questions that I had, and emphasized the Bible as God's authorotative word. Things happened in my life in ways that I KNEW could only be from God. Sometimes I actually heard God speaking to me, with real words, giving me guidance. I can see His hand when I look back at my life as well. Even when I am not 'feeling' like I believe, I know that the fact is that I have been saved and I can make the choice to believe, because I can see God's faithfulness to me.

I was raised in a Pagan family. this isn't to say they made me Pagan. they gave me the tools to explore my own spirituality. if I followed blindly I wouldn't have the religion I do now. I'd still be Pagan, but one that doesn't believe in Gods as entities, rather beleives in the force of nature as part of everything.
my mum is a Pantheist, with no deities.
I am a Pantheist, I feel that energy that connects everything, because I can feel and experience it, I believe in it. but as well as that I do believe this energy also manifests in the forms of Gods. because I have a personal relationship with these Gods, and have experienced them in my lifetime.

My faith is based on three different pieces of information. These are ,Common Sense, Science, and Fact. Common Sense tells me there is a God, and Scientific Fact backs this up. The fact is, I see God everywhere I look. My faith comes from this combination of Common Sense, Science, and Fact.

I wasn`t particularly religious during my childhood or my college and working days. I went through a lot of hardship and even became disabled due to a neuromuscular disease when i was a youth. But all that suddenly changed when i went to work in one of the gulf countries 25 yrs ago. One of my colleagues gave me a book to read written by His Guru and i was hooked to it immediately. While reading i had a strange feeling that i knew everything written in it and there was a sense of familiarity. He gave me some cassettes to hear and strange vibrations started running through my entire body. All this began increasing and i suddenly developed a dislike for all things worldly. When i returned to my home and country i was a changed person and my belief in God was firmed up. I found my Guru and soon started practising the techniques which brought tremendous spiritual experience which helped me advance on the spiritual path with lightning speed. Now i am at peace and believe that God is not just in the heavens but in every man, woman, creature, nature and in all his creation.Without God none of us would ever exist.

When you look at history, at prophesies, at the Jews and all the Biblical statements about them, and what would happen, and has happened...
I can't help but be convinced by the undeniable truth that what the Bible said would happen, at the times it said it would happen, did in fact happen.
Mount Sinai for example. Trace back the steps that the Israelities had taken through Arabia, and even to this day you can find where they went, what they did, the locations they pasted by, all of which would be impossible if God had not provided.
Therefore, I must conclude the Bible is true, and God does exist. I'd have to toss my brain in the trash can to believe otherwise.

I come from a Muslim family where we use to believe in God as well as Muslim saints, so you can say that it was handed down for generations.
But this wasn't a firm belief as we use to associate partners with him indulging in Polytheism. Later on with the help of some fruitful discussions with my cousins and friends we realized that there can be Only One God with no partners. The True God.
This faith then became stronger by reading Quran of course. And last but not the least it is Grace of God as many of my family members still follow that old tradition.

Hi celticeagle, I was raised in the Christian church and was quite active in it for a number of years. Eventually I realized that I didn't really believe much of what was taught there and began taking a logical look at things. Now I feel more certain then ever before that there is more to life then what we see here. The difference is now my believe comes from within and not from any book. I now know the freedom which I could never find within the beliefs of any religion. I know that others feel differently and I am happy for anyone who has found real freedom and peace of mind. Blessings.

Although it has been inherited, the faith is proved in many ways.Without Sun existence in the earth is a question. The Sun is Hot still it is needed to human beings, animals, plants etc; to live. The Nature is mystery. So one got to believe there is something beyond us is controlling. Suppose if walk on the ants , the ants are get killed and the ants may not know it is the human beings killing them. Flood happens to destroy anything on its way. Can we control with the Scientific development. Sunami happened it was not at all predicted. The happenings around us are unknown that makes us to believe there is something beyond our imagination "GOD".

Hi,
Some people are born with firm faith in God. Its strange. Some others develop high faith on there way. I was atheist and a strong one. I wasn't ready to believe in something that I couldn't see. I believed in human beings. I believed in love. Then suddenly an accident happened and I found out the inherent instability in human morale. I lost all faith in people. Its impossible to predict the exact feeling I had then. It was like you are falling into great abyss after the floors suddenly vanished. Then I needed something to depend on, something or someone I can have a 100% faith on. Heard about God a lot. I head before that divinity can lift you out of every earthly pain and sorrow. I started reading scriptures. Slowly I was able to define the cause and true nature of my pain I faced earlier. I suddenly found a way to get over of every possible obstacle and the whole world seemed like a dream to me. I didn't know when certain love and affection came up. I realized that I used to love people with expectations hidden somewhere inside my mind. When I started loving people through God, I learned to love them without expectations or desire. Didn't know such a pure and sincere love was possible at all.
Thanks for starting such an wonderful discussion
God bless you
