War movies.

Hey, mates! I've decided to get myself some war themed movies. I've searched through the whole lists of them, but there are just too many, so it's hard to decide, which ones to download. Could you name some of your favorite war movies so I could compile kind of a TOP5 of them? PS: If the movie you like has been already named, name it anyway, so I can see, which movies get most of "votes".

It depends on your taste I suppose, but I saw to really good war films at the pictures last year, both true stories. "Valkyrie", starring Tom Cruise, was about the plot to blow up Hitler and overthrow the Nazi government in 1944. "Defiance", starring Daniel Craig, was about a group of Soviet Jews who had to retreat into the forests of the Ukraine (I think it was the Ukraine, anyway) in order to get away from the invading Nazis. They set up a sizable outlaw community relatively safe from both the Nazis and communists, as well as conducting partisan operations. These are both very good films, very dramatic and pretty accurate historically from what I understand.

The best war film I have ever seen was Glory. It is about the American Civil War.The way it is filmed , you feel like you are right there in the battle. another good one is saving Private Ryan. at least that's what I heard. I must confess I didn't see it.

I'll surely check the "Glory". "Saving private Ryan" is the one of the ones I've seen and I must admit it is a hell of a good movie. I like the camera work there and the whole story of the film, so it's like 5 star movie for me!;)

Hi Biomechanoid, 'And three came home' is a good old black and white film showing Japanese invasion and the prisoner of war camps, plus of course the wonderful Bridge on the River Kwai, directed by David Lean. My favourite war film though has to be 'the Great Escape' but I'm sure you must already have seen that one, as it's such a classic.

Hi Biomechanoid, I would say Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are good ones if you like the Vietnam war movies. The deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now are also worth a watch. Saving Private Ryan is also a good one and one of my personal favorites, Where Eagles Dare.

I don't generally watch a lot of war movies, but there are a few that I thought were excellent. Platoon (Vietnam) Full Metal Jacket (Vietnam) Glory (American Civil War) Ride With the Devil (American Civil War) - this one I think is usually underrated Born on the Fourth of July (Vietnam) - not so much war, as the effects of war, but it's still good Memphis Belle (WWII) Crimson Tide - maybe not really a war movie, but it IS about a submarine :) The Patriot (American Revolution) Casualties of War (Vietnam) A lot of people include Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan in their 'best war movies' list, but I've just never been wild about either of them. They're good movies, don't get me wrong, but for some reason I could just never make the emotional connection with the characters in either of them that would make me want to watch them over and over again.

Sniper and Forest Gump were the only war related movies I have ever watched. I am not to big on war movies. Sniper is decent, but I don't normally watch them, so I do not know how good it is to others. So wait to see what everyone else says before taking my advice.
