How to comfort your friend when she is upset?

I feel so powerless yesterday because my best friend is bery upset. She began to cry after she gave a call to her father.But I didn't do anything to help her out of the bad mood because I didn't know what could I do in that case.I even did no dare to ask her what happened .I just looke at her secretly off to one side.
I didn't know how to comfort people at all.I feel so sorry and failure.Does anybody can help me or give me some suggestions ?I'm very grateful about it.

Sometimes the only thing you can do is sit there and give a shoulder for your friend to cry on. I know in stressful times like that or in other situations, a person just needs someone there just to listen.
