There are more great movies than I'd realized that I somehow missed seeing when they first came out or some other time before now. "The Deer Hunter" is one of them I can't believe I took so long to see. It's certainly NOT pretty but I think it's the best movie about the Vietnam War I've seen. It was about the effect of the war on a small town in Pennsylvania and it looked like it could easily have been MY hometown and the main characters were around the same age as I was at that time. I think that's why it moved me as it did. I cried for awhile after it was over.
It was quite somber and downright disturbing but I definitely think it's very worth watching. I'd say it should be on everyone's "must see list". The acting of Christopher Walken, Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep (all very young) was superb.
Who else has seen it and what did you think? Also, is there anyone who has been to Vietnam who could tell us if the things that happened in the movie really happened like that? It must have been absolutely horrifying!

I must confess I have tried it but didn't stay. I find that for some movies you Have to have the courage to watch . Deer Hunter is one of them. If not courage then the curiosity.Right now I have neither.I am a coward.I'm glad you got to see it I am sorry it made you cry.

Schindler's List did that to me. I was in a daze hours later.

I don't know that I have courage; I guess it was just determination to see a movie I'd heard so much about but hadn't seen before, I think mostly because when it was released the memories of that awful war were too fresh. Watching it now, after all these years, made me realize it doesn't matter how much time has passed, it was still painful and disturbing. I think that's the mark of a great movie - when you feel the effects long after you're done watching it!

Deer hunter is a movie in my favorites list..A great movie..It concentrated on the after effects of a war rather than making heroes..Christofer Walken was awesome is this one ..so was Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep..It is a good example of classic movie making..So realistic, take us through the situations that surrounds the characters.

Hi anniepa, I have interest about the movie you introduced. As you know I have a totally different position with you, and our movies and publications tell me U.S.A was a invader and deserved a fail in Vietnam battlefield. I'm a Chinese and try to understand things at your position, I've read a series of articles about the history of American, I think the movie will tell me something.
