Are Movies taking the place of Books?

Today we can see that each and every best selling books have been converted into movies like harry potter, twilight series, etc. So the young generation have lots the habit of reading and just rely on televisions therefore the concept of books and reading is dying. Do you agree with this fact?

Hi mrnischalgurung (what a mouthful) I do not agree mrnish... Anyone who loves books will go on reading them no matter how many movies are made of them. I read the book and then watch the movie and 8 times out of 10, I prefer the book to the movie. I think kids too do the same. However, in their case, its the other way round. My niece watches the movie and then can't wait to buy the book which she reads with so much interest and absorption that I'm amazed at the way she can tell me exactly what happened in which paragraph and also compare the book to the movie. I don't really think there's any fear of the younger generataion losing the reading habit. If one goes by the number of kids in the libraries and book shops, I should think there's no chance of it happening. Well, I sincerely hope so.

yes you are right. But the younger generation, especially growing kids have no chance to develop the habit of reading as they are introduced to televisions rather than books so they happen to go towards tvs. so they get so chance to discover their fancy about reading

Yes and no. I know probably not the answer your looking for, but let me explain. Every since film was invented it has been something that people have used to escape there normal daily lives for a couple hours and just be entertained. Books are often used for the same reason, and are for the most far more intricate and detailed than 90% of the movies based on them. So while many people prefer to see a movie rather take the time to read a book, it has also spurred much greater interest in the books themselves than if a movie was never made about them. In any case I dont think either are ever really going away. Books in the traditional sense will always be there, but their format will change. With technology growing and changing so rapidly I think we will see a slow decline in the traditional hard copy written books in favor of digital media, but the stories themselves will never go away so long as you have people with the creative spirit to write them.

i like to read the bestsellers instead of watching the movies. It is because the books are bestsellers not the movies. Sample this : Angels and Daemons by Dan Brown is a best seller but the movie based on this book was not that big hit. Also the two hour movie cant cover all the things given in the book. But yes movies are a visual delight. Movies have a advantage over books that they have special effects.

Yeah, that's quite a prevalent phenomena that books are converted into movies. I think movies have their own advantages over books. For those who don't like reading books or regard reading as a waste of time, watching movie is an alternative. It takes less time than reading, though some plots may be deleted in a movie for the sake of time. It helps them to keep up with the latest fashion. For others who prefer reading, then they can choose to read to entertain themselves. It's all up to different people.

Sorry I have to disagree with you because I know to many people who have all of the Harry Potter books and the Twilight books. Plus they have reread the books. If you know about these books they are big thick books. So the kids are still reading the books.

To me I agree and disagree. I agree because people are getting lazy and do not like to read that much it seems. I disagree because people are starting to realize that the book is about 97% more likely to be more interesting than the movie.

But book sales increase when the movie gets made. And the phenomenons of the Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter, and Twilight all happened because people read all these works in mass before a movie was made. It is more that there is less attention spent on new books that makes everyone think there are less people reading. People read everyday, and if anything the numbers are probably growing instead of shrinking.

In some cases I agree with you. I am an avid reader and one of my favorite things to do is curl up with a blanket and a good book. However, some movies have encouraged the younger generation to read. I was a Harry Potter fan long before the movies started, but now there are kids out there reading them because they like the movies. Twilight got one of my friends into reading, and she is a college student. I had already read that series, too, lol. Sometimes converting helps but there are times when it hurts too like Lord of the Rings. The book is harder to read so most prefer to watch it. I may have found a new author due to a tv series I love to watch. I watch FlashForward and picked up the book. Im afraid to ruin the series by reading it, but when the show is done I am going to read it. Hopefully I will like the writing and have a new person to watch for.

People who are missing out of the books, would not really understand the movies to the extent that those who have read the books will. Not to say that they will enjoy them if they have read the books, but that's another story for another time. The book can tell the story in places to really fill in the blanks that the movie cannot. This could be for time constraint reasons or the fact that what is written might not translate as well from the screen as whatever. Still, movies will never take the place of books. After all, if there are no books, where will movies get most of their ideas?

I have wondered about that before, too. I think every newer generation is getting more and more used to technology and thus instant pleasure; they're losing interest in all things non-digital, namely books. I really hope books don't "die out" so to speak. I don't think they will literally, but I definately think they will continue to be a lesser and lesser part of people's lives.

The "young generation" (damn kids) is not responsible for killing reading, nor is it dying. The two best selling book series that you mention are both so popular because, kids are reading them. It in fact brought even more readers in after they were made into movies, same goes for the Da Vinci Code, and nearly every other based on a book movie. If anything they actually draw people into reading, and many times the readers then move onto other works that are of the same genre due to it. So, no I don't agree with that 'fact'. :D

Well, movies and books are different things in my view. They have one thing in common - you have to see to understand clearly. In the movie you see something and think about it - you enjoy what you see directly. But when you read a book, you have to imagine the things. You need fantasy to understand a book. What I can say is - reading a good book can be wonderful adventure, watching a good movie can be fun entertainment. Reading a good book is interesting and fantastic, watching a good movie can be too. I don't thing that we have to decide which will take the place of the other. The two things have their own goodies.
