Recently in a magazine the Masala Dosa was voted the national food of India!I would like to invite reader's opinions regarding this wonderful snack which is the rage not only in India, but abroad. What is it that makes this dish so irresistible? Is it the crispy outer or the soft centre?or both? Please comment.

masala dosa is a favourite food of the South Indian community. It comprises of a crisp outer aspect(the dosa) and a central soft spicy filling (masala). For the dosa-rice and lentils are ground to make a paste.salt is added to taste.this batter is then poured onto a hot flat pan(tava).while the batter slowly turns golden brown ,the filling which is made using spices and cut and cooked vegetables is put in the centre and the dosa is folded all around the masala somewhat akin to a pancake. This is then eaten hot with chutney(ground coc nut paste) and sambhar(a mixed vegetable curry with spices)

Masala dosa is my all time favorite food. Now a days, I have a of food from resturants and most of the time, I go for masala dosa if it is morning or evening. I enjoy it always. When I was a student and stayed with my parents, my Dad used to take us for movie and dinner out once in a while. I always ordered masala dosa on those days. My Mom makes it at home sometimes, but it won't be as crispy as we get in hotels.

Hello daliaj, Your comment made me travel back in time when like you, we used to have a Masala Dosa on Sunday mornings after attending church. Those were the days...!we had a very good restaurant in our hometown which used to serve up excellent masala dosas. The waiter used to bring them even without being told to do so!!He was that familiar with our routine! At home Masala Dosas tend to be less crispy because of the way that the batter is handled.I dont know whether you have noticed, but in hotels the batter is very thick and is spread using a flat bottomed small vessel which makes it paper thin and hence very crisp.

Hello abhaijith! Yes, this information was published in the Outlook magazine recently. There were some startling revelations about the different categories of foods also.In India it seems that the Masala Dosa is accepted as an allround snack and a growling tummy quietener, but one should see how these fellows go after the Masala Dosa in the middle east where i presently live and work!Very heartening to see that the Masala Dosa has come to be accepted in various parts of the world.

Well, I too like Masala Dosa very much. But since I get it in my house only by cooking, I don't have to go to restaurant. Apart from that, I also like Butter Onion Uttapam as it is very tasty and should go for one, when you really feel much hungry. Another dish is Paper Dosa which in some hotels is a very large dish, but the amount of Paper Dosa in quantity wise which we get is a food for 3-4 persons!!

Hi acematthews71! great to hear from a fellow Masala Dosa afficionado!Rightly said, the uttappams-a very close cousin of the dosa family have every right to be in the spotlight too.I love the onion and the tomato uttappams. The butter variety is much more tastier-i agree, but since it would add unnecessarily to my already wide girth i give it a wide berth(sorry for the rhyme).Paper dosa is also very good, but unfortunately i went to a hotel and got quite a wet variety of the paper dosa(poor serving by the waiter) and ever since i have not had the courage to order it again.Jai Masala Dosa!

Ha Ha Jahida5878, That was a nice way to put it.I would say that the masala dosa goes with any mood!No wonder it is the favourite all over the world.I have tasted masala dosa in a lot of restaurants, but i have found that nowhere is it made better than in the restaurants of TamilNadu .Somehow i do not have an answer to this. The North Indians have their own stamp on this dish with the sambhar tasting very different
