Are there any home ingredients I can use for ice on my driveway

I live on an incline, and we got a dusting of snow last night. My neighbors driveway is dry the roads look clear. I would like to drive to the store, but I don't know what to use to treat the ice. Another concern, it is not going to be above freezing today. Is my only option staying in the house until the temperature gets above freezing.

Hi Venshida. The best things to put on your driveway would be either rock salt or sand. The salt will melt the ice or snow a bit. The sand will give you some traction. Those are the only things I'm aware of. Be careful out there!

Well I hope you can get out soon! In buying the salt, it's best to read the ingredients and make sure there are no added chemicals. The added chemicals are what can potentially do damage to your driveway surface. This winter seems to be particularly harsh in the U.S. this year. Here in Argentina, we're in summer with temps over 100! lol. Wanna trade??? LOL

Home ingredients.
We use sand, ashes, and sometimes animal safe sidewalk salt. Some kinds of salt are not safe for animals, esp. the stuff that is very, very chemical based. Sometimes we use table salt, but from what I'm reading above, that may not be a good idea.

The ashes are from our wood stove and we don't put garbage in our wood stove, I forgot, some people do that.

We use salt or sand if you have any,the best thing to do if you have not got any is to leave the path without disturbing the ice underneath the snow.Dirt is another thing if you can find any.Ashes from the grate is also another good thing to spread around. In the old days all the neibours used to spread their ashes all over the pavements which stopped us slipping over.
