Here's a case of stupidity. A cat named Sal was called for jury duty...yes, a cat named Sal. His owners listed him on the census as Sal Esposito under pets, yet somehow the system didn't read that he was a cat, but a human member of the family. So Sal got a notice that he was called for jury duty. His owners had to actually fill out that form as to why Sal couldn't attend jury duty...well he wasn't sick, wasn't disabled, etc. the only category that seemed to fit, was that Sal didn't speak English ..LOL...Well would you believe it? They, the court, weren't accepting the excuse and still expect Sal to appear for jury duty...is this stupid or what?
Have you ever been called to jury duty...did you attend or did you have an excuse not to?
Here's the story which also contains a video

Unbelievable indeed, shows that technology is not perfect. Imaging the cat going to court and sitting there. But Iam sure theyll sort out the issue.

The cat might turn out to be a better juror than most humans--LOL

Oh my that's funny. I think they would have to just bring the cat in with his tags to show he is Sal. Probably didn't believe the owners because maybe someone pulled the same thing one time? Still that's funny right there.

I think I even heard one bizarre story where someone was summoned for jury duty...there was one real major problem there...the person was deceased

Too funny! I wonder what the defendant did that Sal would be considered for a jury of his peers? Catnapping perhaps?

LOL--I wonder if we pet owners can list our pets as dependent deductions on our taxes? Think it might work if our pets have a name like Willie? Bobbie?

I saw that from someone in the "cat who" group I'm in... (just on my limit of prayer requests, forwards and stuff, I've considered quitting, but then the owner/mods do something to keep me there.)
He's a nice looking cat, but the summons is stupid - and you know if a deputy shows up to arrest him, they will have major words with the people that sent him out.)

Well if you want to hear something really stupid. My mother passed away in the hospital...I kept getting calls from the hospital's billing department and asking for my mother...uh, like couldn't they have looked up the records on their computer that she was deceased? I kidded my friends saying that maybe I should go to the hospital to the billing office and say, my mother wants to pay her bill...then present them with her cremated ashes...LOL

Well they said they would if it came to that (taking Sal to court that is). Oh and I was wondering the same thing, why not ring the court house and talk to them? Maybe sending them a picture with a close up of Sal's tags or last vet visit?

if they call my dogs I will be more than happy to assist my dog and translate.....in fact, my older dog Misia is talking in almost human way, at least I know what she wants...I am glad she is talking not barking...

Would you believe, at the very moment I was reading this post they reported on it on the news! I'd really love to see that cute little kitty sitting in the juror's box, wouldn't you?
Darn, there goes my idea of claiming my seven cats on my income tax!

I wouldn't mind seeing that kitty sitting in the juror's box either...LOL. I guess one could claim pets as deductions on one's income tax form but only if they had "normal" names...I thing the IRS would suspect something if they saw a name like Fluffy

Reminds me of the Lucy show where she was drafted into the army...
I've never been called for jury duty, though I did play a juror in one of the last movies I worked on before leaving Vancouver.

If the judicial system is like that in California, taking the cat to the court won't do any good either, as they won't believe that Sal is actually in reality a cat. What it amounts to is that someone is going to have to become Sal, sans the ears and tail, and go to the jury duty.
Although it might be fun to call the media and get them in on the situation! Imagine the ruckus there would be when they start filming Sal going through the jury selection process! LOL.
I got called for the draft during the Viet Namn war. I had to go in and explain that I really wasn't eligible for the draft for obvious reasons.
I have a serious enough disability that rates me being permanently excused from jury duty. When I really wanted to serve, I never got summoned. Now that I don't want to because of my inability to sit for several hours at a time, they keep calling me.
Humm, wonder if they will provide Sal litter box breaks? Can he order salmon and shrimp for lunch? Gee the jury box would become a kitty litter box especially if Sal shreds the note book and drops it on the floor. (Sorry that one was BAAAAADDDDD!)

How about if the owners present Sal's vet records to the court..would that excuse him? It really would be great if the media follows this story...Sal is supposed to appear on March 23rd, so it'd be great if a film crew was there to capture the moment when Sal is presented to the judge.
Mmmmm...well if Sal does serve, I would hope they have litter pan breaks

hi pyewacket how funny and the excuse that he does not speak English did not fly either. This is so silly. I read one where they did this with a little boy who had the same name as his dad but was Junior, they declared they wanted George Nelson Junior and they thought the dad was just making excuses. finally someone did go to the home to serve a summons to little George so when he answered the door the people were completely shocked, the dad introduced eight year old George Nelson Junior to these stuffed shirts and they tore up the summons and apologized all over the place. it was in the papers for awhile too.

I wanted to comment on the article but would have had to register. In any case, that is one funny story. I would love to see the video coverage of them going to the court house with the cat if it comes to that. Though I doubt they'd let them through the door with the cat, maybe they'd have the judge come to the front of the courthouse to observe that Sal is indeed a feline!

I forget if they mentioned a date or not, but maybe we will see a follow up, I am sure there are a lot more people curious as to the outcome. On the comment's either here or on the article someone mentioned that a facebook page should be made, truth be told, I'm sure this little incident could make the owners a few dollars richer just for "making fun" of the mix up.

I believe it could happen with ease. Though there could of been a mistake elsewhere too. Maybe the person who took the census put Sal elsewhere by mistake, there could of been a glitch in the computer system and so on. It's not stupid that the court didn't accept the doesn't speak English reason, as they likely deal with it often and don't accept the excuse much.
I was called for jury duty once, I went to it with no problems but didn't serve due to my history possibly interfering with biasness (the case was about a law enforcement officer and my dad was a cop and I grew up surrounded by cops). Which I was pretty happy about, I really didn't feel like serving on the case. I don't want to be responsible for a decision that great that can effect someone's entire life to be honest.

I wouldn't want to be on jury duty...first I do have a disability so that gives me an excuse not to attend, but as you also said, I wouldn't like that responsibility of say giving a guilty verdict to someone and then it turns out the person was innocent--and that actually has happened quite often

How about that he's under age?
Yeah, that's pretty much beyond stupid. I didn't know some counties were getting jurors off the census, yikes. It's annoying enough that they keep trying to call my husband when he isn't a citizen. One of these days all these government computer systems will actually talk to one another. Of course, aside from the positive benefits of that, there's a lot that's scary about it too...

I have be called for jury duty twice. The first time I was disqualified because the guy knew me. I didn't remember him at all. The second time I never was needed but had to be on-call for a couple of weeks. It was a bummer. Infact, the one day I thought I would have to go in I was in the transit car on the way down to the court house and the driver was called and told that we wouldn't be needed. The cat thing is due to computers and what they pick up and what they don't. I think people got tired of the census and filled it out weird too.

I think they do it every so many years. You'd probably hear about it on the news. And I think they do it ramdomly which makes not sense to me at all. I would put the cats on it if they asked for it like for pets but not for other members of the household. Been along time since I filled one out.

That is amusing! I am all for treating pets like human but that may be taking it a tad too far! (LOL). It makes me smile when my pets receive mail in their name from the vet or from the cat club I belong to but I would feel a little strange for them to be summonsed to jury duty and not be allowed to get out of it! I would just go to the court house on the day with Sal and see what they say. I was called up for jury duty while I was on maternity leave eight years ago and I got out of doing it because I had a newborn baby; under different circumstances it would have been an interesting experience but at the time I could barely cope wit diaper changes let alone playing a part in deciding someone's fate!

that is just so funny!I can't imagine how the jury will react if Sal comes to the court.I wonder how Sal will decide on a case.if it's an animal case, then Sal will have to come to jury.maybe, one meow means 'yes' and 2 meows mean 'no'?

This is not really a suprise. I have heard of pets and infants getting credit cards, so jury duty is not that hard to believe. If he did show up the rest of the jury and the judge would be really suprised!! You would think the court would accept not speaking the language as an excuse. How can you render a verdict if you don't know what is being said. They must use interpreters.
I always wanted to be called for jury duty and never was. Now I am disabled and can't do it and I have been called twice. I thought after the first time and my doctor filled out the form saying I couldn't particapate they would change their records. I guess they didn't because they called me again.
@pyewacket (43903)

Yes I guess they don't really look upon not being able to speak the language as an excuse since they probably do have interpreters. So wonder if they have someone there that speaks cat language?

That story was so funny. I think Sal should appear in court so we can see that judge's reaction. I bet that will give the other juror's a good laugh. What kind of case are they going to have Sal sit on? Maybe the court is having a case where a mouse is suing a cat for Harrasscat. It would have been funnier if Sal filled out the paperwork and the court could not read the signature. I feel sorry for the owners.
I have never served jury duty. I was supposed to once but because my grandfather had passed away I was able to be excused. My husband was supposed to serve, but his mom had passed away the day he was supposed to serve. He had to go in, but he was excused immediately.

I spoke to my grandmother today (she lives on Cape Cod) and she was telling me that Sal has to appear in court on Monday. This is should be interesting.I feel bad that the owner has to take time off from work to bring Sal in. It makes me wonder how her boss reacted when she told him or her I need the day off so I can bring my cat in to serve jury duty. I am sure that the boss has heard some great excuses in his day, but this one must have been unique. I would love to be in this court room just to see how red the Judge's face will be when he sees that Sal is not human. What would be even funnier is if he gets a check and tries to cash it at the bank since cats do not normally have bank accounts.
