When a begger asks for money in a signal, do you give money to him/her?

Normally in signals, when the vehicle stops, beggers will ask for money. I usually see the begger's condition as to whether he is handicapped, blind or very old and then give money. If the begger is an able person, then I will think, am I not working at this age? Let the begger also work and earn. And I never give anything to such able people. Am I wrong in thinking so? What do you do in such case? Please share your opinion.

You are not wrong. Like you, I will not give unless that person is really a disabled. It is sad to see that there are more abled people out there begging. I really look up to people who really want to work hard no matter how disbaled they are. My country encourage those disabled by giving them shelters and teach them to do crafts or arts and in return sell those hardwork into cash. These people are really inspiring people. I am amazed.

Even in our country, Government has provided for beggers. Crafts and arts and other works are taught and they can earn by way of that. But these beggers earn more by way of begging and do not want to work. That is why I do not take pity for able persons.

Very true. They just want an easy way out. Having to beg when you are perfectly capable, I wonder how these people feel. Don't they have self esteem? Personally, I will neither feel safisfied nor accomplished if money that I get is not from my own labour.

Hi Friend,
Yeah friend ,its a common scene at the traffic signals.
I would Give money friend.Because they cannot earn money by doing any job.So i would try to help them usually. And i think,we should help such people and they are just asking for one or Two rupees and we may not able to understand their situation while living in luxury.
But there are lots of people who are not willing to do any work even if they are physically fit,and just seeking for some money to spend at the Bar.
We should realize them.
Have a Nice Time.

Finally it is our judgement of the begger on which our giving money will depend on. Happy New Year friend.

Hi Buchi_bulla, at times I give, but at times I do feel the same ways as you do. However, there are bigger issues involved which I came to know much later. Many of these beggars are owned by other beggars, yeah slaves like. They've to earn a minimum amount everyday to get some shelter and food from their "owner". If they do not invoke pity in you, there is every likelihood of the owner taking them to some doctor and having the legs and hands of his slave amputated. Women are supplied and children are used to create sympathy. Even children are supplied. Depending upon abilities, other professions such as pick pocketing is taught. Basically, these children are from households that are not happy. May be a drunkard father that beats up wife and children every day, or some gambler that abuses family. They run away from home, and think the world will be like the Bollywood movies. Once they land at the railway station or the bus station, these "owners" befriend them, and then offer them shelter and food. Soon the profession starts. :( In nutshell, you don't give them, they will lose their limb, you give them something, this thing will continue to flourish. So it is heads you lose, tails they win situation. :(

hi! Actually it is common for us to see the beggars on the street while they are many professional beggars smong them. And people here have sum up a sentence: when you encounter the one who asks for money, then give him some food; if you meet the people who begs for something to eat, we should give him some money.

I read an article. There are professional beggers and they earn a lot and lend money to others. They own some property too.

I agree. Some of these are syndicates too whereby, they gather children and make them beg. The top people are the ones who have the money in the end. This is an easy money for them to get rich.

There may be cheaters also in the beggers, at the same time genuine beggers are also there. We have to judge and it may not be correct always.

One time, I felt so pity with this begger that I gave him $1. Instead of saying thank you, without shame he said, "is that it?" I felt cheated then. Mmmm....

i wouldn't give them anything because i figure if your taking the time to stand out here and beg for money you can be out here looking for a job as well. then sometimes i wonder are they really homeless? lol you never know. but i will say in some cases they really are, i would give money to a begger with a child.

But again there is a problem. If the begger has rented a child, then how will we know whether she is genuine? This happened very recently in our city. The baby sitter rented the child daily and was caught one day by the parents, who were going for work.

I don't usually give money to people on the street unless they are playing an instrument of some sort. When they are playing their instruments, they are trying to atleast do something for a few dollars, and a lot of the music that they play are really interesting.

Very true Danishcanadian. Some beggers play very well and can even sing well. I too feel the same way like you. At least they are exhibiting their art and talent for which they deserve some money.

Usually I do not give any money to the beggars, in a signal. The reason being I usually travel in a two wheeler and since I never carry money in my pocket, I do not like to take out my purse, and take some money and give it to the beggar. If I am in a car, I usually switch on the AC, so the windows are always up, and the beggars will not be able to see me, because of the dark tinted glasses.
Regarding your question, you are right, I also do not like to give anything to beggars if they are able, I always give to the handicapped and the old people. Everyday in the morning, I always give some money when I take a morning walk.

You said that beggar if he has normal wealth condition, and able to work, than you don't give him a cent...But did you ever think that some beggars have job and this job can't to give them money enough for their living - I mean for rent and food. Nothing exclusive, only for bread and milk...You would say - get better job. But if in his place there is no job opportunities?
If you are in such a nice country where people can get a job or government offers tickets for food and other social help, than you are not able to judge people if in their country their government don't give these extras!!!
So beggar could be in the same age as you are, but without privileges which you have! Don't think only from your area view. Don't be so insular!

I agree with you bubulizzz. But there are certain jobs which anyone can do like taking care of footwear outside temples which can be done even by handicapped persons. You are providing some service for money here. Housemaid work is always available. Washing cars, gardening work oh there are plenty of opportunities to select.

There begging agencies, we can not give to just anyone. I've met with people who pretended as a beggar, they asked by force and if I don't give the money then I am threatened by their weapon. Fortunately at that moment I was a few meters from my house and I did not bring money. Tense moment was when they hold up fingering in my pocket, and finally I was released because they do not get anything from me.

In any case I won't give any charity to any beggers. Because if he is hale and healthy, he can work as a casual labour and earn for himself. If he is old and sick and physically handicapped, i think some body is using them as their muse by disabling them as I know and also read in various news papers that some scrupulous persons kidnap small children and mentally unsound persons, make them physically handicapped and leave them in the streets and the alms thus collected, they will take and feed them very little so that they will become skinny and if they beg people will take pity and give them more alms. So for that reason, though I feel sad about the condition of the old and sick and disabled, I do not want to encourage them

Well, I agree with you. But most of the times when I can I help beggers. I know what is to have no money and don't know what to do. Or have just few bucks for money and other stuff. . . That's why when I can I try to help a person in need. You're not wrong that most of these people can work but prefer not to. But I just can't say NO or GO AWAYS when I know that I can give them few cents.

AS it was expected all the replies are flowing from the Indians or the NRI's, or from those who are familiar to India or the ASIA Pacific region. As these business (begging) is grown here only as it is being encouraged here only. So I am strictly against it so I never give them anything. But at the other hand if I found some one really needy, I give try to arrange something to eat for them and if I have to give them some money, I give theme some sort of work, like cleaning up my vehicle and give them enough money that that beggar can survive starving and can't become the burden to my wallet.

Do you mean to say there are no beggers in other countries? I have not visited any country, hence I do not know about it. However your principle is very appreciable esjosh. Give work and pay them or give food for the needy.

sometimes a beggar is not a person on the street so ask GOD in prayer to decipher the real and the one pretending.sometimes,it is angel!trying to test someone if he/she will show kindness to someone who came from nowhere!i believe, i experienced it long time ago when i was just around 10 yrs. old. when i asked him he answered clearly and straight and after many yeras i realized he was a messenger from GOD!
