I used to be a backpacker. Now I am an independent traveler. I traveled around Europe when I was 18 years old. I took my first backpack and traveled on trains with it. I stayed at youth hostels. My first backpack was worn out after my first few travels with it. I got my second backpack when I was 19 years old. I traveled around the world with it when I was 20 years old. I did a working holiday in Australia and stayed in backpacker hostels.
The important rules for backpacking on a train trip are have a narrow plus thin backpack plus lightweight stuff in it. I take a camping plate, cup and cutlery set. I have a camping style lightweight and quick to dry towel. I have a washing line which doesn't need any pegs. All of these items are light weight. It is wise to have a money belt and to sleep with it plus shower with it insight. If a student a traveler could have an International Student Identity Card for discounts.
These days I travel with my children and we stay in guest houses. I fondly remember my backpacker days.

I've been travelling through Europe with a backpack and an interrail ticket, yes. I think it is getting popular again, after some years with very few interrailers.
The backpack is essential of course, one that you can carry without getting backpains. Clothes that are easy to wash, so go for half dark colours, not white. Comfortable shoes, you will probably we walking a lot. Some kind of rain-coat, not a big heavy one but one of those that fold up to nearly nothing. It is easier to go for layers, if you bring a fold-up rain coat you can just put more of your clothes under it if you get cold but if you bring an heavy one it'll take up lots of room in your backpack.
