According to studies, animals have feeling,,affection and almost all emotions that we people have. There is also one movie"March of Penguins[i know they didnt show this on animal planet.] But if they have similar emotions , do they also believe i God?most of us pray [generalization]for selfish perpose be it loving spouse, healthy child, safe living, comforts etc,I am sure animals too want them.Animals too protect their children from somebody?when some body used to through stones at dogs and then they would run to the house where they feel safe and hid them selves untill the danger walks away.So ,when the dog hides, will not pray so that we do not find it or hurt it? do they remember or understand the concept of God? it seems animals can see more than what humans can see.Do they think they would have already seen God? is it true that dog howls when it sees "Yama DHARMA RAJA"?Can it see them? or does it know that there is no God and that is the reason it doesnt not pray..?I have see taht one cow ..was always leaving her milk to a ground and after some days people digged out thAt ground ad found ONE gOD STATUE..BELOW THAT !

I think yes, because we too were like animals millions of years before , actually man is also an animal. So, if we believe in God and remember him , its possible that other intelligent animals also believed in the power of God.

it really depends on what kind of a God you're asking about.
my personal belief is that deity is the face of the creative forces of the universe. do animals believe in that? they don't need to. they don't need to believe because they are so much a part of the drives and forces of nature, they need never ask themselves if it's real.

I am not sure if animals believe in god or not. Yes there have been many studies that say that dogs have feelings too, and as well I do believe that. I'm not sure if there's any way to prove that a dog prays though I suppose when it whimpes and covers it's eyes it may very well be. It is said they see more or are sensitive to more then we humans are, so they very well could be communicating with god through prayer. After all, Dog spelled backwards is god, maybe each dog is a piece of god's love, after all dog's are very affectionate beings.

"After all, Dog spelled Backwards is God, maybe each Dog is a piece of God's Love"... I meant to suggest that Dogs are beings meant to show affection to their owners, as God does for us... In that Like Santa's Elves are Santa, Dog's are to God.

The only real showing of that, is through Koko The Gorrilla, who they were able to teach sign language to. Koko was very simple, and couldn't put together many big sentenses, but more single word answers for questions. When they asked Koko "Who is God?" Koko replies, "Me". And when asked "Who created the world?" she replied, "another woman". It could have been mistakes in conversation, or perhaps a more Hindu kind of approach, but it was something.

hi!
i love your discussion topic..
well for me. in my opinion. animals dont believe in God. animals are like people that they have also an emotions, feelings affection. but one things they dont have is, they dont have souls and their minds are not the same that human has. we cannot compare ourselves to animals because we are so special form of creation by God. thats why we are called humans.

Not sure what animals believe since they don't seem to have higher reasoning or are self aware. They say dolphins are the most intelligent creatures in the world and I know the US government spent some money trying to decode their language but I have no idea if they have a system of beliefs or what their self awareness is. I would have to say most animals aren't self aware if they were they would be greedy and corrupt as humans. Where as most are part of the pack and have a pack mentality. We humans have it also but our isn't for the good of the pack but the trying to outdo those in our own group or that's how society has been built for the most part.

Fear ,Feeling and Faith are most of the causes to belive in supernaturel things.you are true that animals have no need to belive in god as they live innocent life..

I believe animals do believe in God and can see the spirit world. Consider the story of Balaam, his donkey, and the Angel in the Christian Bible in the book of Numbers 22: 22-35.

I do not think animals have to believe in the Divine. They are more in tune with nature and do not try to fight against nature. I do not think understanding is necessary to trust in something or have faith in it. Animals do not question the existence of the divine like humans do.

Normally with 5 sense creature may not think of God. but their helping nature to mankind in many ways makes us to realizes they are God creature and they are GOD only. Cows, give milk to make human to get enough vitamins to live. Dogs are very sincere to their Masters, like wise there are animals helps human beings. In olden days All Rishies( Saints) survived only with fruits of trees and Cow's Milk. They are god , God gives love to one abundantly.

Very interesting question!
I'm not sure about the answer, but somehow . . . I don't thing that animals have gods. My way of believing is - God is Faith! And we, the people, really need this Faith. We're nothing without it! Maybe all humanity is based on the faith, the belief in God. And that's why we're not like all animals. We think and act in very different ways. But sometimes animals, especially dogs, looks like they see more than people.

In my opinion,if dogs believe the God,the figure about the God maybe just likes a dog.As you know,we think the God as human figure, chinese think about the Adi-Buddha as a eastern face.So does the dogs.If they believe their God in heart, who has the dog's figure.

It's the "animal" in human beings that believe in god.
Intellectually, we have left belief in metaphysics many dcades ago, because modern pholosophy denies the existence of gods.
But emotionally we have a primitive need we can't justify with reasonable arguments. We simply must believe that someone is protecting us...
I think we share this need with our ancestors that prayed to the sun, that the longing for God is as old as life. It is a need that we share with all living creatures in order to survive.
Don't animals - even unconsciously - want to survive too?
My latest art project deal with this problem showing cows having religious experiences:

Let me hear you opinion!

I don't think dogs believe in anything other than what they know. They can't think for themselves, only live by instinct and what they are trained to do.
Sure, they may have some of the characteristics that humans have, but the one characteristic they do not have is to think for themselves and know right from wrong so anything that isn't physically there for them probably does not exist to them.

As you correctly said, animals do have feeling show affection and show all states of emotions, and they do have belief.
Belief i classify in to their daily routine, about the way the lead their life, strangely they do have strict culture laid by their society and that which followed in their life.
And many more things one can go on adding, at times the life of an animal is far superior than MAN. Going by the good qualities that the animals have, i conclude that this may be possible only if it is WILL OF GOD. The WILL OF GOD, according to me, is possible only IF ANIMALS HAVE FAITH IN GOD.
Happy mylotting.
P.S: Codeofuniverse, really this is nice and good topic, something different you have thought from a different angle. Really nice. Hats off to you. RATED PLUS YOU POST.

Hi codeofuniverse, I doubt if animals believe in God in the sense that we do. I think that they know that there is more to life then just what we see on this earth. Sometimes people refer to dumb animals but I think that is far from the truth. They probably know more about what's happening then we do. Blessings.

Animals believe in the person who feeds them. Some are very affectionate, but I believe that the affection is tied to what is put in their food dish.

Well, from a christian point of view I would have to say..Yes, without a doubt! I don't know the chapter/verse but it does say in the Bible..Let ALL things that have breath praise the Lord..
In the scenario you offered with the dog and stones, I would say yes, that the dog prays in that God hears its fear as prayer for protection..Being the type of critters we are we'd like to define things by way of comparison to our perspective. We think in terms of prayer as being words but forget that those words are the reflection of the emotions that spawned the prayer to begin with and that all critters are emotional..
Enjoy!

My cat will look up and follow "something" with his eyes almost on a daily basis. Sometimes he meows at corners. What is he seeing? I have no idea.
