I have worked in the gaming industry and witnessed first hand how distructive pokie machines can be. It's sad to hear about people who lose everything because they are addicted to these evil machines. Does anyone out there have a story or opinion about pokies?

That's actually kind of funny. Forgive me for my ignorance, but I had to look up what "Pokie machines" were before answering your question. In the States they are called slot machines, and yes they can become extremely addicting. People have won and lost fortunes sitting in front the "Evil little machines". I myself don't have any great stories, but I did leave Las Vegas with about 10 cents, my clothes, and my plane ticket once. Simply because I blew all my money, both my winnings from previous days, and the rest of everything I had on the slot machines. It was a good thing I did not bring my credit that particular trip, or I probably would have lost more. And the casinos are 100% geared towards keeping you playing as long as you have money. I dont know if it's the same in Australia but here, so long as your playing a game, all your drinks are free, you can smoke where ever you like, and there is perfect lighting, and no clocks to tell you what time it is. So if your not wearing a watch you could conceiveably play something all night, and never realize what time it is.

Slot machines (pokie machines) are not evil in themselves. People can become addicted to these machines, but they can also become addicted to many other habits as well. I like the slots and am perfectly happy to play the penny or nickels and have a great time without spending very much money. It's like all things in life, moderation is the key. There are people that spend their evenings drinking in a bar, spending their paychecks on liquid refreshment or going to the mall and buying a dozen pairs of shoes that they can't afford. If you have an "addictive" personality, then anything can be done to excess.
Normally my husband and I don't spend very much or win very much because we use it as entertainment. However, a few years ago, my husband hit a jackpot for $6,000 on a slot machine and a few minutes later, hit $800 more all in one afternoon! That's the only time we have really won anything significant, but with the little amount that we usually spend, we will be ahead of the game for the rest of our lives after that win.
