Breaking bones through falling on ice

The BBC and other news programmes are reporting record numbers of broken bones after people have fallen on the ice. Hospitals and emergency services are inundated. I haven't been out much, but just going to post a letter from the car parked next to the post box, I almost went down. My husband fell last night and injured his arm, but not seriously, thank goodness. If you live in the affected areas, have you escaped so far? Do you know anyone who has been injured.

I have some experience with falling on ice and know enough to be very careful of my old bones. Even if you don't break anything it can be very painful. So Be Careful out there.

Thanks Pat. Just this morning our ice is melting, although we have been warned it might come back again. I'd been wondering whether to hunt out my golf shoes, which have little spikes I assume would stop the slipping. They haven't seen the light of day for years. It would be satisfying to find another use for them.

Hi jakill. I live in Maryland, USA and we have had a wintry time lately. More so up in extreme western MD in the mountains (and we were there too the first of the year). Only had one slip, but that was close to our parked car so I was able to stabilize myself. To help prevent bone breakage it might help some people to take calcium supplements.

Yes PastorP, that might help some of us, especially older people, as bones can get more fragile with age. I'm glad you managed to stay on your feet and hope you won't have any more accidents.

One icy winter I fell off a horse and broke my bone high up in my arm. I had to have it in a traction plaster for two weeks and then a light plaster. Another time I slipped on a step fell braking my wrist. I had it in plaster of Paris for six weeks. I remember the pain of those broken bones. I am trying to walk carefully and prevent myself from falling over. I am sorry your husband fell and injured his arm. I am happy to say I don't know anyone that has been injured in the ice. Good luck

Well, those are not very nice memories. I hope we both get through this winter unscathed.

I have two friends on here who live in Sussex that have both fallen and injured themselves. Two of my colleagues fell on saturday and bashed themselves. Touch wood I haven't fallen yet but there have been a few near misses. I actually cleared a path across our front garden and sanded it. Does anyone use it? Nope they all walk straight up the steep drive! I hope that you husband is mended soon and take care of yourself too.

It's been almost 3 yrs now since I broke my ankle falling on ice. I ended up having to have 2 surgeries because of it, the second one just a few months ago. I'm still experiencing quite a bit of pain and I don't know if I'll ever walk properly or wear my favourite high heels again. This whole process has been quite a nuisance. I'm still hopeful though. I'd like to strengthen my ankle enough to at least be able to take my dog for walks. xoxo Cyne If you want to see all the pins I had in my ankle, here they are: http://adf.ly/115253/brokenankle
