Is there a faster way to master a computer language?

I have a degree in Electronic Engineering. However, my real passion is in computer programming. But given the hectic work schedule and a family to look after, I really don't have the luxury to enroll in a computer school and take up part time courses. So what I do is to learn by myself, from books, magazines, websites or anything I can get hold of. Expectedly, I am not making much progress at all. Need your inputs.

Mastering a computer language takes time. But, it depends. Web programming languages like HTML, CSS, javascript or even the new HTML5 and CSS3 are fairly simple once you get accustomed to the basics. Always remember that the concepts of all programming languages are one and the same, but how it has to be typed changes from language to language. You can find a number of excellent video tutorials on youtube about the same.

If you are talking about speed in learning then no, the only thing i can suggest is a simpler programming language if it gets too complicated for you(VB is a good choice). HOWEVER, with simpler languages comes less accessibility, meaning you can't perform as many tasks as you can with an easy language versus a complicated language. It's all about learning it, and being diligent about it!

Several universities and colleges have Open Courses either available by going to a few lectures or going online, these courses are normally free or have a small fee but generally do not give you a certificate or actual credit in a course, they are for personal use I found a link to a free online course by MIT that deals with programming http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Electrical-Engineering-and-Computer-Science/6-001Spring-2005/CourseHome/index.htm there are other programs but they are basically - a do it yourself, this one is from 2005 so I don't know how much interaction there may be if there is any with teachers etc, but it is a starting point, there are other courses and even sites such as http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/ hope you find something that works for you.

I really think it depends on what kind of language you want to learn. Some languages kan be learned just by reading books, so you dont nessecarily have to enroll at a course. And some programming languages you can find guides and tutorials for online such as; PHP, ASP and Java.
