Okay, so I've been going through a depression for quite some time now & I watched this show on PBS called this emotional life that was saying how happiness is contagious. I wanted to post my own happy thought to start this discussion rolling & get y'all's feedback but i honestly can't pin down a real "happy" thought right now. I mean yeah I've laughed watching clips online etc.. but a real life happy thought escapes me.
Let me hear your happy thoughts or memories & lets hope it spreads |:)

I am so sorry to hear of your affliction. My daughter also suffers from bouts of depression and although I sympathize I do not understand how it feels as I am 99.9% happy all the time. My daughter actually spent 3 years being housebound and only went out if she absolutely had to. I seem to be the eternal optimist. I talked a lot with her about religion NOT organised religion as I do not practise that but more of the spiritual aspects which have helped her immensely.

Depression is a mood of degrees. You get low and sometimes you come right back out of it. Other times you go down layer by layer into this funk and you feel as if you will never get back to 'normal'. It does happen. But it seems each time is different. But, through it all one thing to remember and to hold on to is that it is all in your head. If you let it grab ya then you are at its command for as long as your will is gone. You have to set goals for yourself and give your life meaning or all is lost.

Sad to hear you're feeling low meme0907, I myself have the moments when I feel so depressed. I relate them to Pre-menstrual syndrome and in order to escape from the sadness I sometimes spend time with my neices...yes, why not try to spend time with kids...they are fun to be with and they always have happy thoughts...they can make you laugh either. Secondly, try to search some funny videos in youtube. I used to search episodes of my favorite funny show and I watch it for hours and at the end of the day i'll be laughing my guts out. Lastly, if you really want to brush off the depression, try doing something for yourself...something you wanted to do and you're surely to enjoy doing...even if it meant you have to alone, it's still fun. Right? Hopy I have helped you somehow. Cheer up! Life is too short to be miserable. Happy mylotting.

You are so right life is too short. Thanks for the kind words. It's been a couple months since I've started this discussion & I might say I'm a bit better. I thank God in my prayers for my MyLot friends you all are so helpful & have always encouraged me any time I need it.

Hi,
I just want to say... you did the right thing, try to make yourself happy a little bit at a time. It doesn't take away all but at least you enjoy your life at the moment.
I deal with a lot of things here, family (kids, husband), financial, and work. sometimes it makes me going crazy but I am trying my best to avoid depression cuz if I can't handle myself then my family will be left down. I dont want that to happen at all... I used to ask myself, how am I going to handle this but I trust in my God and he is watching me and taking care of me everyday... so I just face what happening now and for tomorrow I will think about that tomorrow.
I dont have a happy thought for you now... but the most happy thing that make me feel alert is my family, once they are doing fine and husband does the right thing for me then I am happy already.

babies are such a blessing, you are very fortunate.
I've been doing better since I started this discussion-I've started focusing more on the joy of the Lord, started going walking again & stopped smoking.
I thank everyone for their responses & support. I can always count on my friends & fellow MyLotters.

I'm not sure if this counts as a happy moment but it sure made me laugh! My four year old daughter told me "if you don't stop being mean to me mommy, a house gonna fall on you too!"(We watched the Wizard of Oz a few nights before)So I have to say my four year old daughter makes me happy despite the 'house falling' comment..lol. She's light hearted, friendly and care free. My pint sized princess seems to help me keep things in perspective.

Hello meme0907,
My mother suffered from depression and had nine children. I still do not how she did it. I do remember her being in the hospital twice for it and stayed in over a 1 week each time. My youngest brother suffers from depression was diagnosed when he was 17 years old. Been in out of the hospital quite a few times. I know medication can help sometimes but like my mother and brother the affest wore off and need higher dosage or another type. I also have a sister who has multi peronality disorder and another sister who suffers from bi-polar disorder and my other sister has axiety attacks. Talk about knowing and trying to understand it all. It is never easy you seem or have one good day a week and the rest sucks if you know what I mean. They all hated winter and dark and long days. Walks are always good. My father tried to my mother to go for walks with him etc...
Making good dinners and reading seemed to help her and her sports Nascar and Baseabll. She loved comedies shows to get her to laugh.
Thanks and have a good day

Hi meme0907 .
No that I have a few chores finished I can respond.
Let me start with some short sentences that helped me when God was teaching me how to get out of depression.
The first one is from, I believe, Chuck Colson, who had been in the Watergate mess, went to jail, but then committed his life to Christ. He wrote a book with a title that made a positive impression in my mind:
This Too Shall Pass
Then, the Lord encouraged me to think the following sentence:
It could be worst.
Now, the foundation cure of all depression whether it's major, grandiose, bipolar or anything else is to have the person of Christ reside within. We then can focus on God, Who never changes and is intimately concerned with every facet of our lives. At this point, the Holy Bible will come alive and there are many verses to dwell upon that will lift us up. Then, there is worship of God. Really, anyone can express worship to Him. The thing is, it goes against our nature take that positive action when we are feeling low. This is what is spoken of in the Word of God as a sacrifice of praise.

thanks for the words of encouragement-I don't really follow the idea of bipolar depression or the need for meds etc... i just think some times ppl get so hard on themselves & they just don't want to let up for whatever reason. I have let unhappiness be a part of my life (stupidly b/c I know the truth) Hopefully I will allow happiness in the same way |:)
