An earthquake has hit Haiti with a magnitude of 7.0 causing a hospital to collapse.
The eartquake hit 14 miles west of the capital of Port -au-Prince. The aftershocks of the earthquack are at a magnitude of 5.9. Its to early to know the casualites at this time. I would never want to live where earthquakes can happen, even though I know they could possibly happen anywhere at anytime.

Yeah this is indeed a shocking news to hear. The magnitude of the quake was really strong being at 7.0 which is a very rare incidence in that area. I just hope that everyone is coping with it because from what I read from the news even the government buildings were affected that even the residence of the president was badly damaged by it. It would seem that even the government right now is helpless at this point in time.

I saw CNN tonight and Anderson Cooper was reporting by using a generator, and behind him it was completely black but you could hear people screaming and calling out. To me that is like hell and I can't imagine what they are going thru. I could cry thinking about these poor people. They must be feeling like I did on 9/11 when I escaped the World Trade Center and thinking the world was coming to an end.

Oh gosh...I could not imagine being in an earthquake, I live in a valley and the most we have gotten is tornadoes and even at that there has only been one that has ever actually touched down and that was back about 23 years ago when I was 4 years old. I don't think I would want to live in a place where this sort of stuff happened on a regular basis.

I'm with you that is why I haven't visited California because I know its just a matter of time when the big one is going to happen. They just had one last week but I don't remember the magnitude. Thanks for responding.

That was very sad news, lelin, considering that Haiti already has enough problems without any more. I hope that aid will reach them quickly because they really will need it. That is the one reason I would not want to live in a tropical climate - the fear of disastrous weather.

I know what you mean and there are so many places to live that natural disasters happen. I would not want to live in fear like that all the time. Thanks for responding.

I have been watching this on the news. That earthquake really cause a lot of damage. I don't want to live in a place where they have them either. I went to visit my grandmother in California and was a little nervous the whole time that there might be an earthquake. People are pretty used to them now. There was one there last week that was a 6.5 I think. Take care.

Yes there was one in California but it wasn't major. However, I wouldn't want to live there at all. Its to scary to know an earthquake could happen at any time. They also keep talking about the big one that is coming. That is too scary to hear.

Hi lelin, Japan quakes everyday. They say that their construction of their shinkansen railways is earthquake proof. My country is in an archipelago in the Pacific and we are frequented by semi-moderate quakes like Japan. Our faults are constantly moving. Our Davao in the south just received a 5.0 magnitude as of this writing. Our last strong quake measured 7.7 in July 1990. It destroyed lives and property. Can't escape earthquakes. Can only pray it does not happen. I had the goosebumps when I saw the images of the aftermath of the Haiti quake. Am still praying.
