I am in the process of buying a new digital camera and I need information from actual users, since some reviews found on the internet can be a bit biased while others are way too technical for me to comprehend.
I also want to make it plain and clear that I am not looking for a DSLR, since I am not really a hobbyist. I just want to upgrade my old digicam into something with higher quality and resolution. Also, it is just something that I would like to use to take pictures of special occasions with friends, families, or loved ones. Hence, I simply want an entry-level camera. There are two currently on my mind, Cybershot and powershot. I used my cousin's Canon powershot A480 and i think it's good enough for me. But if there is something better without being too expensive, hope you could provide me more info.
Much appreciated!

to buy a digital camera, you should not compare the brand .... each brand has advantages and disadvantages, and it will only make you confused .... so my advice, identified after sales service from each brand before you decide to choose a brand .....
better to choose a brand that has a satisfactory after sales service than choosing a brand, but do not have after sales service

wow, that is a useful tip i would have easily neglected or missed out. but i was also concerned about the features, such as quality of the photo, and the like. but anyways, i value your opinion. it sure does help once i actually head on out to buy one.

I would say Canon, but I have nearly only Canon equipment so I'm a bit biased. I really like the quality though, but if you know someone who has a Sony camera, check if you can borrow it and take some pictures. The difference between the different brands is very much a matter of what they feel like and how you like them, I think they all can take good pictures.

That is some nice input. Really, that is what I wanted to get too. Not all the technicalities of it, but more of how it feels like. I guess for someone like me who just intend to use it for everyday purposes, and not like some serious photograph hobbyists, then the point you raised about how you feel like using it. Then, I'd probably start looking around now. Thanks for the insight!

I had bought one camera recently after a very good research. Even I had been confused about which one to buy and almsot went to 10 shops to compare the prices and the quality of pictures taken from digital cameras from Sony, Canon and nikon. Finally, I have bought one camera from Sony with 10X optical zoom and 10.1 Mega pixel. I have found it really worth the price. It costs some 279$ abroad, however in India it took me 18000Rs which is nearly about 380$ according to the current conversion rate. I amreally satsified with the camera because of the quality of pictures that come. It is a cybershot. Even I used to think that I am not a professional and i would also go for some cheaper ones. But then i thought its a one time investment and finally i went for that cybershot from Sony. I took advice from my broher too and he supported me well. When comparing to canon, th cameras from canon are good too with good quality but I did not prefer a camera with pencil cells. Sony offered Lithium battery but there was only one model of Canon that offered a lithium battery i.e. SX20 but that is even more expensive. even if you go for some cheaper and compact models, I would suggest Sony. but then do check out the models of canon if you fine working with pencil cells rather than Lithium battery. Oh, I forgot to tell the name of the camera I had bought. Its Sony DSC H20. I am ataching the pic for your reference.

Well, as of now I don't have a budget for the camera that you are suggesting. But you have raised some excellent points that I can use when I finally go shopping. Will look around some more. Thanks!

I never have tried a sony camera. But we have a canon SLR. Well, its a great camera to use. It's like you are a professional photographer even if your not because of its good quality of picture. But if you are thinking of buying one, i think both brand has its good name in the market. I suggest that you look for the feature that will fit your needs.

I own a Sony DSC 50 digital camera Its main features are:The DSC-H50 is a full-featured point-and-shoot with outstanding high-power zoom capability. It includes Smile Shutter technology which captures smiles the moment they happen, as well as Face Detection technology to optimize focus, exposure and color for up to eight faces. Shoot detailed images with 9.1 megapixel resolution, and bring your subjects closer with the 15x optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens. Intelligent Scene Recognition automatically selects your camera's settings based on detected lighting conditions, while Sony's double anti-blur solution helps keep your images blur-free.
I am quite satisfied with this camera.I use it for capturing birds in flight and action, and various other subjects.

Are you from the Philippines? How much does Sony DSC 50 cost? It has got some pretty neat features, judging from your description. I will look it up when I go window shopping today.

I have never seen a single Canon camera fail its user both in image quality, performance and durability. Though it is not always the name of the camera that works. I used to have a Sony and Canon DIGIs. Sony is more for user friendly nad for those who simply wants to take pictures of different events. But if you will be a hobbyist I find Canon to have a more advanced features and gives you more control to your Camera. I have a Canon IXUS 110 IS which is capable of shooting HD movies and gives you a basic control of shutter and ISO up to 3600. SO I'll say Canon Ixus if you want a portable camera that packs great features but if you want to have a somewhat DSLRish but smaller in size and just in an entry level, I suggest that you get a Canon Powershot. Again before buying make sure you try taking a couple of shots and test it's features too.. Good Luck :D
