My son has had cradle cap for the past month, I really want to get this taken care of. I had searched online trying to find an answer to this. I ended up taking baby oil and combing ALOT of the nasty stuff off of his head, then I washed the baby oil out of his hair. This did not solve anything. Then per the doctors suggestion I'm no longer using anything but water to wash his hair as she said this would make his scalp not so dry. This did not work either, at this point I'm willing to try almost anything. So, please if you have any suggestions or first hand experience tell me all about it.

This will sound weird but it works wonders for any kind of skin issue. Get a tube of medicated chap stick (yes that brand) and rub the spot. If near his soft spot melt it and rub on your hands first. It is made to heal lips (all skin) quickly and it really does work wonders.

Yes it works on my eczema. I have three spots that bother me when I am pregnant (I had it as a kid real bad) and it does work. Large places can be an issue to get it on though.

My son had cradle cap luckily he had hair though so people didn't notice. We tried everthing and nothing other then time worked. He had it until he was 2 almost 3 and we continued to try to get rid of it but nothing worked. He is now 4 and cradle cap free so don't worry with time it will go away. I know it is hard to look at sometimes but it is completely normal.

Wow! Three years! I never would have expected that. My son has hair also but it gets so bad sometimes that its all loose in his hair and the harder I try to get rid of the loose stuff the more comes loose and gets into his hair. It makes me feel guilty like there was something I should have been able to do to prevent it from happening in the first place. I have also read somewhere that if it gets too bad it will cause all his hair to fall out, I really don't want this to happen!

My son was the same way the more we tried to get rid of it the worse it looked so I just made sure every time I gave him a bath I washed his hair really good that seemed to be the best that way we didn't have flakes of cradle cap stuck in his hair. We never experienced any hair loss due to it and he had it a really long time so as long as you keep him well bathed I don't think you will really have to worry about it. It will cure its self in time.

my son also had cradle cap, he is now two and its gone. I used a product that is sold in the baby aisle. I'm not sure what brand it is but it comes in a green bottle and it especially for cradle cap, you put it on the scalp and leave it for awhile then comb it out. I used that for two weeks and it was gone and he hasnt had it since. but like some people said it will eventually go away on its own.

My first 2 girls had cradle cap really bad as well and I didn't use any of the oil, I would just take the fine combed brush and pick it off each day. My sister has used something with Winnie the Pooh on the front and its for cradle cap and says that it works well. Someone introduced me to Melaleuca and ever since I have used their hair/body wash prodcuts for my babies, they don't get cradle cap!! So, possibly check into changing the type of product you are using to a different one.. possibly Aveeno which you can buy in the store?? Good luck.

Hi smewell,
I have 4 kids that are older now. When they were little I always did the baby oil treatment just as you did. Did it cure it? NO. But it did get rid of it temporarily. Back then that is what the doctors told us to do. I did it at the first sign of it and in between washed their hair with baby shampoo. They do outgrow this in time. Maybe not washing the hair each time you give your baby a bath would help. It's like dandruff. there is no cure...just ways to help it not be so bothersome.

One of my girls had craddle crap and what the doctor told you is right. Just wash the babies hair with water so it is less likely to dry out. The child will grow out of it I am sure and I know it looks nasty but it is very common among little kids:) Take care and dont let this little set back bother you about your child. Happy mylotting to you as well.

There are a lot of people who will give you a lot of different treatments to use. I personally had the same problem with my daughter and I had to use baby oil, the only difference is that I did not put it on during the bath. First I washed her hair and combed and picked off as much of the dry skin as I could, then I rinsed her hair again. After gently towel drying her hair, I applied the baby oil and let it stay in her hair while she slept. The next day I washed out the oil and applied it again, I had to do this for a few days but the cradle cap finally went away. You might have better luck trying that and seeing what happens. It is normal for baby's to get cradle cap but it can last a while. Just have faith it will go away eventually.

Have you tried the medicine for cradle cap? That helped my daughter out pretty well.
I didn't have the internet at that place so I kind of just... winged it so to speak... But I'd still use baby shampoo on her to wash her, but I think throughout the day I'd alternate the cradle cap stuff and baby lotion.
Good luck!

It's something he will have to grow out of. We did the same thing as you with the baby oil and combing out the scaley stuff . . . it comes off, but bottom line is his head is still creating the extra oils or whatever it is that is creating the cradle cap. I heard you need to wash the baby oil out well because that could make the condition worse. My daughter's pediatrician first recommended Cortaid to put on her head short term - it's a mild steroid cream - but it didn't work all that well for her (maybe for others?). We didn't want to use that too much for too long because of the steroid content. My daughter is almost 5 now - and it's nearly gone and not noticeable - for her it took a while to get this far.

you can try rubbing a small amount of warm olive oil mixed it with few drops of primrose oil into your baby's scalp before bedtime.
