My mom works there, and I think she would have told me about a update in policy like this. I am pretty sure it is just a rumor.

It may very well be a simple rumor! But I heard it from someone who works at a large grocery chain here and they are planning on taking advantage of the situation and promoting giving their bags away. They are planning on some healthy competition to draw more customers!

This policy is good for the environment to reduce plastic bag consumption. In Taiwan, all supermarkets already charge their bags at NT2 (around 6 cents) each. But they do provide recycled merchandise boxes with self-help plastic tapes and plastic ropes for customers to pack their purchases on their own.

It's still a good business strategy, lose some customers, earn some profit, and help the environment. Besides, it may soon become a law as it is in Taiwan and some other Asian countries for business establishments to require customers to purchase bags to teach the general public to limit disposable plastic usage.

You make some very good points. I am willing to either pay a little more or figure out how to save a little more using alternative means,,, for the environment's sake!

It's really not a bad idea to help the environment, but I don't think that's Wal Mart's frst concern. I think they see a way to make an extra buck, it is secondary that it is beneficial to hte environment!

You are probably right about that. It really would help the environment. I don't mind taking my reuseable bags from other stores to WalMart!

Here in Argentina there are certain grocery stores that charge 10cents for bags. I usually take them with me when I shop at that store again. I reuse them until I wear them out then pay my 10cents to get another. Bringing your own bags is always an option. As for getting a refund for returning them....well, I'd have to think this is not a possibility as they would be considered "used" then. The Wal-Mart here does not currently charge for bags nor have there been any rumors of their intent to do so.

I've heard that for the most part we are very fortunate that no one yet charges for bags. I usually carry some with me that I have purchased so as to not add the plastic to the environmental challenges!

I think canvas or other types of bags are the way to go. I remember when plastic bags were first introduced in grocery stores in the U.S. "Would you like paper or plastic?" Remember that? The introduction of the paper bags was to cut down on the destruction of trees. You were considered to be more environmentally conscious by opting for the plastic bags. Now the plastic ones are causing problems! lol. What to do, what to do?

There's a store close to here still asks if you want paper or plastic.I prefer to use a canvas bag, I feel it's the best alternative but I have a difficult time developing that habit. I keep fogetting to take it in with me when I go to the store!

Could be a rumor, have you checked snopes?
I avoid them like the plague. I used to work for them and don't agree with the way they treat employees-I'm hoping that will change soon! And I also don't like the crowds. I would only pay for these bags if I knew they had an on hand recyle facility. I think it's a great way to get people to use reusable bags-but if they are not going to do that-then shame on 'em!

I try to avoid Walmart too. I have not checked with snopes. It was my daughter who told me that her company was looking forward to it because they are expecting to be able to get some of their customers when they make the change!
