I'll be getting a new computer soon with the Windows 7 OS and I'm interested in discussing Windows 7 with anyone who is currently using it. I am particularly interested in its compatibility with older programs. For example I use Office 2000, but I don't know if it's going to be able to run under the Windows 7 OS. So I am interested in getting feedback from anyone who is currently using Windows 7 on any program compatibility issues.

I am using windows 7 now. My older softwares are all running in it. Sometimes I encounter minor compatibility issues but it can be solved using the xp/vista compatibility feature in windows 7. I'm not sure about Office 2000, it's quite old, Older than windows xp. If it doesn't run, then it might be time for you to upgrade.

I have tried Office 2007 and I don't like it mainly because the files that it produces are not compatable with earlier versions of Office and it will not save files in an earlier office file format. This causes problems when I have to exchange files with people who are working with older Office versions. And that's nearly everybody who I deal with.
Office 2000 runs fine under XP Professional which is what I am using on my present machine, so perhaps I'll be able to get around any issues.

I have beening using Windows 7 for several months. Personally, I think it's the most excellent OS Microsofs has ever invented. You should give it a shot.

You can save files that are compatible for earlier versions of Office in Office 2007. If you choose "save as", there's a dropdown list of file formats that you can choose from.

Hi JW! Haven't seen you for a while, how are you and all the kitties?
Just stopping to comment on the Office 2007 issue that you mentioned, about document incompatibility with earlier versions. When saving files, select the 'SAVE AS' option. Then directly below the 'FILE NAME' box, you will see 'SAVE AS TYPE' box. This allows you to save files that are compatible all the way back to MS Works 6.0. We have Office 2007 at home, but my step-daughter's school still has the 93 or 98 versions (depending on class).
I'm following the answers about Windows 7 OS, because we've been contemplating upgrading from Windows XP and I was wondering if I'd lose older programs.

Hi Cat. Self and cats are fine and thriving Thanks for that information, and I see that others have also posted the same above. I did not realise that it was possible to do that so it looks like I'll be upgrading to Office 2007! I still don't like it though, in my limited experience of it, I got the impression that it was a lot less user friendly than the earlier version. But that may just be a case of needing to learn how to use it properly.

LOL..yes there is a learning curve for anyone used to the older versions. My step-daughter using it for the first time jumped right on and knew where everything was. Me, being used to the older versions, have had to relearned where the options I want to use are. I laugh at myself and say, "You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, it just takes longer".
