Why did it take a earthquake to wake people up about the poverty of Haiti, Well People already knew about Haiti they just pretended not to know. Haiti is a hope skip and a jump from the USA, They are our allies...READY TO HELP PROTECT OUR FREEDOM ALL THE WHILE THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS ARE LIVING IN TIN HOUSES EATING MUD CAKES...... Shame on the US! and Shame on France! I really wonder in the wake of this quake will the US and others really reach out to Haiti and help them get back on their feet. I mean the US is wasting money on never ending non sense wars, Why can't they use some of our hard earned tax dollars and go on a humanitarian mission.
...I have had to turn my tv off because I am doing nothing but crying.
It is about time for Haiti to be shown some love. I will be doing my part by sending donations, What about you what can you do to help Haiti?

I don't know...I think a lot of people really didn't know about the poverty of Haiti. I've even supported charities that do work in Haiti in the past and even I didn't realize the extent of the poverty there until all the earthquake coverage in the media. If you'd asked me before the earthquake what Haiti's biggest problem was, I'd probably have said deforestation (and that is a huge problem, planting more trees will greatly help rebuild Haitian agriculture that is much damaged by erosion). I didn't realize people were living on just $2 a day or eating mud there...mentally, I think I just assumed Caribbean nations were more prosperous than that. Other people probably knew even less than me. It's easy to live in a bubble, isolated from many of the problems of the world...for instance, I've never been to Haiti or met a Haitian.
I'm also donating to help the effort (so far I've given to the Red Cross and am looking into other organizations as well). I think that's all I can do right now.

This is the only Caribbean country in extreme poverty. People in Haiti eat mud pies everyday when there is no food. Haiti has been ignored for so long and it is very sad. I know people from Haiti and I have seen video of how people are living in extreme poverty. It is very sad because no one should be allowed to rot.
And this earthquake was nothing it only destroyed material things. People have been dying in Haiti like this for a long time, they have been suffering like this for a long time. They come over here on rafts in droves because they just want a better life. And yes when they get here some of them are violent and commit crimes. But because they also live in a bubble they think if they come here they will get instant sucess and that this is the land of opportunity. This is only a the land of supposed freedom but we all struggle, we all have to work hard and we still do not have what they think they will get. We go hungry here also it is just that we have orginizations that are organized to give food to needy, there the gangs run the orginizations giving the food. There is usually fights over food distibution and not everyone gets what they need.....Right now even though there is food being distributed some still are not getting what they need. Haiti needs orginization, This earthquake did not cause this mass kaos you see on CNN or MSNBC this has been going on for a very very long time. AND IT IS SAD!

To the opening poster: It's incredibly rude to say people only pretend not to know about Haiti and totally wrong for you to say that. You obviously have no clue what others know or don't. Besides, when you read and hear about all the missionaries that were already there, it's obvious that people ARE paying attention and trying to help and have been for a long time.
Now that I said that, I don't even remember where Haiti is and know nothing about the country. I don't have TV so I heard about the quake from a friend then looked online about it. Almost everyone in the world wishes (and many are willing to work and sacrifice to achieve it) that everyone had at least a decent life.

I am with you on doing something better than waging wars with hard earned tax-payer money. Infact, we must do something about paying so much taxes to the government.Just give them enough to maintain law and order and safegaurd individual rights. Wasn't that the sole reason for which governments were formed in the first place. As far as charity goes , once people have their money in their hands they can help other if they want to.

You are so very right, But greed is what runs our government. And if you have enough dough you can get away with murder here. The United States loaned Haiti money but they took the money back. The US and several other countries helped Haiti get to where they are. Everytime I see a child hurt with out tears while watching the news about this earthquake I can not help but to become emotional. These children suffer everyday and they do not even know how to cry, They got tuff skin. children should not have to have tuff skin. And the United Nations what are they here for? Do they even have jobs? Those people have been living inhumanely forever and our country, other countries, the united nations they all have ignored it. I am so ashamed of my government and I am the wife of a vetern.

I think it's a little more complicated than not caring. Many people get wrapped up in thir own lives until they see what can happen when a natural disaster takes over 200,000 lives. With God's help, it is our duty on earth to stick together and help each other out when we are in need. Haiti may not have been able to do the same for us but I hope that we can trust our heart and try to understand what it's worth to lose your entire home and family and be willing to help.
It's wonderful how much America has done to help. I agree that money is getting wasted on wars. More than half of America wants the troops to come home!

It is very tragic I feel as though they are human and still my family we share the same heavenly father. My prayers and My everyday thoughts us for them. Even if I had to open my home to them I surely would! It was so sad to even see the presidential palace in ruins. My heart is hurting for every last Haitian even the ones living here. Because just for them to see their country and its people suffering has to really be a hard thing to deal with right now

It looks to me like ALOT of people realy care about Haiti. There are so many people already there helping the victims, and there is more help on the way. Do you realize that we have not one but two USNS Ships (hospital) going to help out? I watched the USNS Comfort leave the Chesapeake Bay to go Haiti myself.
There were other people there as well ( Sandy Point State Park) to wish them well on their voyage southward. Many people waved huge flags and were all along the beaches.
People do really care, doctors and nurses from all over the world are going to help, as well as people to go try to dig out survivors. I must admit I get a little 'fumed' when I see reporters just reporting, I'd like to see them actually trying to help as well.
It is very sad to see what happened down there, but be assured the our country is doing alot to help, also with President Obama giving them at least 100 million dollars to aid.
As for what I can do....I can and do pray, that's all I can do, I can barely afford to feed my own children, I am lucky these days to even have a job. I can't afford to send money, however I certainly would if I were able to.
So, I pray for the victims, I pray for their families, I pray for all of the people who went down there to help.
I have to ask this though.....Do you really believe that they eat mud????
