Are you a leader or a follower? ...Or a little bit of both?

College classes started this week. It was really natural for me to offer my help to people that needed it to study for our first test in Music Theory. It's a tough subject, but it felt so right for me to be in front of these people... teaching them the how's and what-for's of the fundamentals of music... In addition to that, I'm learning the art of conducting. I'm so enthralled by the idea of being in front of an ensemble some day that I've put together, that I picked the music for... I would have to say that I'm a bit of both a leader and a follower. I follow my mentors, and in turn I strive to be a mentor to others....

I am more of a leader than a follower, although I do follow the instructions and advice of people in senior leadership positions. I do not have a mentor right now but have in the past. People tend to come to me for guidance.

hi thedirtydiva,
wow!! that's so wonderful. I can really see that you are a good mentor. I think someone who knows how to listen can be a great leader. I find it so selfless and kind when a person shares what he/she has learned. In my case, I think I'm a little bit of both. When I was still studying as I remembered, I had been a group leader or class leader every school year or if not, I usually got nominated to lead a certain activities in school. It feels good whenever someone sees you differently, in a positive way. That you are somewhat becoming an inspiration for others. I also think that I am a good follower, there are so many individuals that I look up to and get inspired with.
happy mylotting!

As for my opinion, I think all of us will be the same..leader or follower? We are somewhere in between. People tend to be a follower when they are in the process of learning, trying to follow what a leader said or what they asked to do, we are learning something from them perhaps one day we will become one of them. When come to implement the knowledge we have, we will become a leader of others. Well, I'm a follower that trying hard to be a good leader..everyone can become a leader but just few of them a really good leader.

I agree, aevans! Thanks for your time and post. I'm lucky to have some amazing professors to look up to. They strive to inspire every day through their actions and words. I hope I can positively inspire others to take the reins --- some day. I have a lot to learn, still!! Thanks again!!

I think i am more of a leader. I feels good to have control of things that surround you. Being a leader also gives you the responsibility or sometimes more of a burden regarding issues about your group.
I also think that being leader does not require you to possess any characteristics but you need to have the will to be one.

Thanks for your post, ramplified_17. That's an interesting point. Having the will means that you're able to work for or to take that leadership role. Being a leader is bittersweet, for sure. You have to be able to take on all aspects of the role. Now to be a great leader, one must posses all kinds of moral characteristics. Your response is so dark, I almost don't know how to wrap my brain around it!! lol

I think im a little bit of both. in my experience, before holding the presidential position of our chorale, i was in a way a good follwer. i follwed whatever our president or conductor says, doing the best that i could in singing with the group. after 2 years, i was elected as president, and now i lead our chorale in all the school activities and to the upcoming university wide chorale competition. i believe that a good leader is a good follower. and one wont be able to lead if he/she doesnt know how to follow.

Excellent, Taikixtrain! Congrats on your leadership role. That's going to be a huge help in the future. It's very important to be inspired and led before you can correctly inspire and lead others. Thanks so much for your response and your time!

Neither. I will not lead anybody to try and make them think and act like me, instead I will implore them to find the beliefs that they think make the most sense and that they should do what they think is right and not what I do. I'm not really a follower of anyone because there isn't anybody that I live my life by their opinions or ideas.
I believe that we all have to find our own truth because truth has been so distorted over the years that the only truth we know is what we think or have been taught is.

That's great Jambi, thanks for your time!! I appreciate your viewpoint. In a way, your strength inspires others so you are a leader. A humble one, but still... *implore* is a great word here. There are so many leaders (be it they are teachers, bosses, elders in our families) who are dictators... Their way or no way. The opposite, a leader incorporates the free will of those they represent. There has to be several people who look to you as a leader... You're just not a demander. And that's awesome!!! Many thanks again!!!

I can be one or the other one at a time. At times, I usually would like to start off as a follower. To see how things run, to see the flow, and once I get the hang of things, I can learn to manage. I don't do hostile take -overs though. :D

I'm a little bit of both. I don't like to be the one making all the decisions but I don't like to be pushed around. For example, take my job. I am a supervisor so I direct the front line employees but my manager, Ben, handles a lot of the bigger responsibilities. I could do it if I wanted to, I'm sure of it, I just don't want to. My self confidence is a bit lacking, I admit it. I'm proud to be a supervisor and I am content to be in that position.

Had been a leader ever since I was still studying. Its because of this trait that made me on a good job at present. You chosen path today will predict the outcome of your future. If you choose to become a good leader today, then there is a better chance that you would succeed in the future. If one chooses to become a follower then he will become a follower for the rest of his life.

Very well said, Fulltank! Thanks for your time! I believe choosing to take that risk to put yourself as the leader with worth the chance to make those mistakes, learn and grow from them and then continue to lead. Quitting is so enticing - I've done it a time or two (or 12!! lol) - but in the end, you dust yourself off and move on. And you're absolutely right. We choose our paths!! Thanks again!!!

I think I am more of a leader, but I do not like to give rigid instructions and commands. I listen and compromise to what each member of the team has to say. There are also times that I really wouldn't want to be in that position because of the frustrations it could cause and the faults you have to own up to, but I get appointed as the leader. So I have to live up to that. I am also a follower in the sense that I have a superior in what I do, and I follow what is agreed upon by everybody.

Thanks for your thoughts, Mimi. All leaders have different styles and if you can't take your followers seriously, then they can't take you seriously. So I think it's great that your leader philosophy is to listen and compromise with your team. Your team is much more trusting of you and feels they can speak their mind. That's just awesome!! Thanks again!

Hi thedirtydiva.
I think to a degree we all are both leaders and followers. Even if one does not do much and just goes with the flow, chances are there is someone following that person.
In my case I have to be both. As a husband, dad, and pastor, per the Word of God I need to be the leader. But those same instructions tell me to first of all follow Christ, follow the good examples of others, and follow another person that God would direct me to follow. Without following the entities just mentioned, I cannot be a good leader.

PastorP, I sincerely appreciate your response. The tags, however, are not the conversation I wanted to get in to. For someone who has lived his life through Christ, I understand that it's only normal for you to speak the "Word of God." I am, however, Agnostic. I am not religious, but I have spirituality. It's hard to explain. I have had very bad experiences with people of and in the church - various kinds of churches... I have sought out God and Christ, to only to let down by hypocrites who are only there for show. My intention with "are you a leader or are you a follower" was not a religious one. Thank you so much for your time.

I'm a mixture of both. I prefer to be a follower when there's a lot of work/responsibilities involved as the leader. I don't want any stress or pressure so I follow the footsteps of someone who can manage these things. At times, it can be frustrating when people don't cooperate and just fool around, which is why I take on the position as leader in order to make some order.

so are you saying you wait until someone does it wrong, so you can do it right? we all have tons of responsibilities and yours could be to not allow time to be wasted because of someone else's mistakes. sounds like you just need to place that confidence ahead of your fear of managing tasks and responsibilities...

I tend to be a leader at work, at least in the landscaping, fencin, and laboring world, because I know what I am doing, and find it easy to help other. However, being how I am a very quiet and shy person, I am usually a follower with friends or family.

we all are little bit of both. we had to respond as per the situation. when i see that no one can lead better than me in this case then i must lead it. but in some cases other leads better than me then i let him lead but i don't allow him 100% to be my master. just little bit and not too much. but i could find that most of the time i am a leader not a follower.

I have always been a leader in most of the cases. It's natural thing, I don't do it myself. The others just think that I should be and that's they I become leader. The others thing that I can manage the team better that them. And also they like me as a leader. But being a leader is something serious and you should be responsible for almost everything - even for somebody's mistakes.

I am more of a leader. I want to do things, I want to initiate projects and do my own thing. When I am in a group I have the tendency to take the lead. I am not much of a follower. I must have born a leader because I want to be there, to head a group. I find it challenging to do that.
