What do you do in an awkward situtation?

Lets say I'm having a conversation with someone who I just met. We are talking and talking but suddenly it gets all quiet. What I'd do is bring up a random subject or topic to keep the conversation going. It's possible that this could make the situation even more awkward, but at least both of you are talking and getting to know each other.
