Do you switch off your monitor?

I switch off my monitor. I do it numerous times and on different occassions. Here are a few instances when I turn off my monitor - 1. When I shut down my PC 2. When I listen to music on my PC and do not do anything simultaneously 3. When I leave my PC running (mostly because a download is on) I do not know whether this saves electricity or not, but it has become my habit. So, do you do the same thing? Or do you always keep your monitor on?

i have a laptop so im not entirely sure whether i can turn my screen off properly or not. However i do turn the brightness down to 0, which i guess is kind of the same. I do this mainly when downloading or listening to music. I also find that sometimes when i shut the lid and open it up again, If the main house computer is also on, my laptop sometimes struggles to find the wireless connection which is pretty annoying.

Oh that is sad. We all have different kinds of weird problems when it comes to our computers and laptops. Shutting the lid on the laptop puts it on a sleep mode, I think. Mine did. That is a good way to lower the power consumption. I did it all the time. I shut the lid and again when I opened it and pressed a key it came back to life.

The monitor is usually on when Im using the computer/laptop. That's because I tend to multitask and most of my reasons for turning the computer on requires me to see what I Im actually doing. Else, I wouldnt be able to finish all that needs to be done.LOL The only time that the monitor will be turned off is when Ive been away from the laptop too long or when I close it. It's set to automatically hibernate when closed. Of course it's also closed if it's shut down or when Im not using it.^_^

Sometimes I do that too, I mean myLot while visiting sites and listening to music. That can be called multitasking in a way.^_^ Same here, if I watch a movie on the computer I also dont do anything else. I just focus on what I was watching.

Alright I get it. You really seems like you do a lot of work on your computer and laptop. I used to multitask before, but now it is only mylot and a couple of sites and well sometimes I listen to songs while typing. Other than that I watch movies but when doing that I can hardly do anything else. That is all I do now a days.

Oh, I do not have that option. But I like to turn it off.. Yours is a new one and the power button is already giving troubles? That is really bad. You should call the service center and ask them to take a look. Is it within the warranty period?

I have a laptop so I don't think I have that option. I think it does save your electricity. I have heard that not leaving things hooked up to the electrical outlet also saves on power. I think this is something that people really need to look into more. Even if it takes a little more movement on our part.

Sleep? Why? I just carry it from place to place and hook it up.

Yeah that is the best option. I do not know, but some reason, now a days I find people keeping their laptops in sleep mode. They just do not want to shut it down. Maybe this is some kind of trend.

Hi celtic, since you have laptop you can do one thing - you can put it to sleep and can carry it with you. It will save you a lot of power.

Yes I do. It will not only give longer life to our monitors but for safety purposes especially. It is also a sign of being a responsible user.

I did not know all that. I just say my first computer teacher do it in school and I picked up that habit. Nice to know what I was doing is good and that it makes me a responsible user. It is like I passed an exam without even realizing that I had sat for one.

hi sagnik42, I do switched it OFF the monitor when the computer are not in use.I guessed this will save electricity and energy(perhaps a little). Offing it will be much more safer than let it ON all the time especially when no one are at home. What if there's short circuit or incoming thunderstorm. If everyone OFF the monitor or any other household items when not in use,it could help a little on the Global Warming issue.

I understood what you are talking about. But I do not think the heat really has any compound or anything like that. See, most of the flammable substances like petrol, gas etc, when exhaust release harmful chemicals in the atmosphere and that can cause global warming. But I am not sure that any such compound is released when we use electrical appliances, specially things like computer. I am not very good at these things and am not well informed. But that is just what I think. I will do some search in this and let you know. Thank you for the explanation by the way.

Hold on a second Tayd. How is this going to help the Global warming issue? I can save on the electricity, but how can that help in Global warming?

emmm, not sure how to explain it but i try my best. Our global warming are majority caused by human activities in this modern times. We depends so much on electricity in our household and office and every place occupied by human. Each electrical appliances or electronic devices emits heat more or less. If each monitor emits a little heat, then a million monitors will emits tremendous amount of heat.Try put your hand near the back of the monitor, can you feel the heat? The reason i wrote about global warming are because i read an article before about this issue and how people caused it.Not sure in details but i can recalled part of it.I guessed global warming are not just caused by ozone depletion only. After all,the ozone depletion are caused by human activities also. Hope you can understand my explanation because i don't really know how to explain in scientific details.Take care.....

usually im on the pc if its on and also mine being a laptop i dont want to leave it running a long time with out doing anything on it (my husband did this and burnt out his battery) and i figure with as much as im on it i risk the battery burn out already lol!! but if i do have a screen saver on so it at least dims it and i have the choice to put it on battery/energy saver which would limit the productivity and dims the screen to save electricity

The laptops really have some cool features. I had one but gave it to my kid brother. Now I only have my PC for my company. I am looking forward to buying a new laptop. I will buy one in a couple of months. I am saving money for that. Can you recommend a good laptop in the low price range?

That is a nice advise. I do not know the reason though. I personally do not like to put my computer to sleep. It is better to just shut it down and start it again later. Anyway, thank you for the response.

yes i also switch off my computer's monitor sometimes when power goes off and i have to shut down my system or when i move away from it for having breakfast or lunch or dinner...so i switch off monitor. Surely it says a lot of power by switching off monitor as it is consuming too much electricity because all colorful display on it..so prefer to switch off monitor to save power.

I do not actually know whether switching off the monitor will help you save electricity. I mean, if it is connected directly to the line, then it might save you money. But if you have connected your monitor to an UPS then, I think, that your power consumption will be more or less the same. I am not very sure, maybe someone else will be able to clarify this.

I never press the button to switch off the monitor... because I just use a laptop :P But if I had a desktop, I'd switch off the monitor whenever I wasn't using it, like listening to music.

I am using a LCD. I know that they consume less power than the CRT ones. I do turn off the monitor when I do one of the things that you mentioned. Well, I forgot to add, I turn off the monitor when I hear my father entering the room and sit down with my books. I fool him just by pushing one single button. That is awesome.

Hi, sagnik42. I usually will switch off the monitor when I have to walk away from my monitor for any reason. Like if I have to change a diaper, use the bathroom, check on my food on the stove, fix me a quick bite to eat, answer the door, or when I have to do something that I know I will be a while on. I will put my monitor on sleep mode and then I will return when I am finished. This puts my computer in a low power state and it saves on the electricity bill too.

Hello, Yes of course it saves electricity. Monitor is among the major equipments that has greater power requirements. Your sound system is also one of them. I turn off my monitor when I am downloading something or when I am out of the room for a few minutes. I don't usually listen to songs unless I am doing something else on my computer along with it. Especially, when I do some programming or write articles, I do listen to music. When I shut down my PC, I don't feel any need to turn off the monitor. I've connected its power supply to the back of my cabinet. So I make sure that my entire system has isolation from power. Cool discussion.. thanks Take care God bless you

I also switch off my monitor while converting music or videos from one format to another, during listening to music, during downloading. This is defiitely a very good habit. This not only saves electricity but also shows how responsible and careful somebody is towards valuable things.
