Most pictures of Jesus depict him as being very serious, even sorrowful. Do you think that this is a fair assessment? There were of course, no cameras at the time and no one painted a portrait of Jesus, so why have artists always assumed that he never smiled? I once read that there is a letter per sered in the Vatican that was written by a Roman soldier who was in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus. In the letter, it is said that he mentions Jesus and makes the comment that "he smiles a lot". I've concluded from reading the gospels many times, that Jesus was a man who would have smiled and even laughed a lot, after all he wanted people to be happy. What is your take on this?

I agree with you! I think Jesus likely smiled a lot! And laughed a lot, as He had so much love in his heart, and one of the top ways to spread love is to smile.

Hello
I do beleive Jesus smiled often. He may smiled outside but also in side with his spirit. I also he was dissapointed to and worked really hard doing what he had to do.
I do blieved he smiles often to his mother Mary and his father Joseph as he grew up and when he was 4 to 6 years old. Isn;t funny how the bible does not talk about his early years like when he was toddler or like when he was 10 or 12 ttwelves years old.
I always wonder what he was like with other children his age.
Thanks and have a great night

I believe that Jesus was a normal man who just happen to have special abilities, but people just didn't understand him. I believe that he was just like any other man. He had emotions just like any other human, he had "needs" just like any other man, and I would not be surprised if he actually fell in love. I believe that he was a normal human being. He was a normal man.

"We are created in His image". We are creatures just like Him. We have emotions and feelings, Jesus have them as well. I think, Jesus Christ is a serious person because it is not and easy task to handle the sins of the world, yet He has a good sense of humor, just like us. Hahahaa...lols.. God wants His children to be happy

I would think that by painting his image as being smiling or laughing it would not hold to the fact we are suppose to take Jesus as a real and serious person. That a laughing Jesus, would be like a joke to some. I could not imagine a person no matter who they was not ever laughing or smiling. But I have seen movies also where I never seen him smile, guess he is to be taken serious and that is why no smile on his face ever. And a letter from the time that Jesus was around that a long time ago. Wouldlike to see this letter.

I can only say what my experience has been. It has been my pleasure to know several holy people and I always found that laughter and smiles were a great part of who they were. After all they see more of the whole then the rest of us and can see the play of God. Blessings

I think he smiled when he was preaching because he was doing what he loved and i think he also smiled when he was healing persons and performing miracles .However I think there would be periods when he didnt smile as much because he was thinking about his ultimate demise .So think when it was coming to the point when he was to be killed ,he wanst smiling as much as he normally would.

yeah, and even me, i think his real image is a mystery and the photo which being recognized is only an illustration and their is a tendency it is not his real images based only from an artist description so even the image may have flaw on it. off course he could smile a lot as the hearts who feel its presence have its own shares of pain and joy. during his times mostly he smile because he come to sacrifice his life and in return many souls are save.

Does it really matter if he smiled often then? I think a smile is just a gesture but it does not really state what the person really feels.
Jesus loves everyone. He loves the believers and the sinners. Surely smiling would not be an issue regarding His love for us?

...Jesus work with mysteries. I think and I really feel that Jesus is always smiling at us no matter what the situation is. We don't need pictures or proofs that HE smiles often because every person you encounter in your everyday life, that makes your day, is Jesus. He works with us, He uses us to make let everyone know that HE really exists. Do you really want a proof that HE smiles a lot?? Ask yourself, "did I smiled often? Did I make someone's day a good day because I smiled?".. then you will the answer...

I believe he smiled. If he hadn't then where would we have all learned to be happy? There are no pictures perhaps because so many feared him back then. You know I did always see one picture of Jesus growing up where he had a smile it was with a group of small children. That was my image of him the kind loving loving God as I grew up and still to this day. Until you mentioned it I hadn't really thought or noticed the others where he is never smile or where he seems kind and loving. Rather sad that most of our children grow up with that image now.

He probably did smile alot, wouldn't you if you could do anything possible to man. But pictures of Jesus also show him as having white skin, i believe i'm correct in thinking that Jesus was from the Jerusalem area he'd actually have a dark (arab) middle eastern skin colour. Just goes to show, its all make believe.

Hi brooky, Thank you for commenting and your right, Jesus would not have had white snik, but that doesn't matter in the least as we are all one anyway. I Believe that he lived and that was a man far ahead of his times, Too bad people made him into a God. Blessings,

He smiled a lot during his period, and he still SMILES a lot today. There were times when he was in agony, and obviously during those moments he couldn't smile, yet he still accepted that it was what his Father wanted for him. He was sent to save the people form their sins. I couldn't just imagine Jesus Christ constantly wearing a gloomy face, after all, he is Jesus Christ and he wants us, his people, to smile, laugh, and be happy.
I think He has the most beautiful smile that one could ever imagine.
:-)
God bless!

If we look at great leaders its usually quite simple to see that they smile because they generate so many great feelings inside themselves by giving to others
