I have a cold, I haven't suffered with a cold for many years now. I did a little research and it said that a cold has to run its course, just take something for aches and pain.
I went and purchased mostly Tylenol cold products, now I see where there is a recall on Tylenol products. I am concerned about taking anything with the name Tylenol right now. I do have some Alka Seltzer Plus Cold over-the counter medicine to take. I am going out today and purchase some other kind of over-the counter medicine.
What would you suggest that I get? What do you take when you have a cold?

When I catch colds, I take plenty of liquids like juices and water. I take a rest by sitting and relaxing. Going to bed right away will aggravate the situation. I don't take tablets for pain at once, not if it's still tolerable. This is to develope our body resistance to common colds and not dependant on medicines. I do some floor sweeping and dishwashing to keep my body a little active. I also make sure that if I perspire my clothes will not dry up on my body because this will complicate things.

I'm a big fan of natural products such as a lemon honey drink, or something from the health shop. I reckon there are three main types of cold (probably more) that can usually be dealt with with either andrographis, olive leaf or garlic. One or the other usually deals with my colds. Andrographis is great at drying up your nose.

Don't ya just hate when things have to run their course? I buy the Dayquil/Nyquil gels caps. One can buy both the Dayquil and Nyquil gel caps as one combined purchase. And with the gel caps, there is no way one could over do the Nyquil portion. The Nyquil gels caps don't make a bit sleepy. Most stores have their generic form of the Dayquil/Nyquil, so it can be cheaper than the name brand.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've caught a cold, Chevee! They can be miserable, can't they?
I just bought some Cold-Eze. It's zinc in a fruit-flavored lozenge. Zinc has been shown to cut the length of a cold in half, as long as you start taking it at the first signs of a cold. I used to buy some lozenges that had zinc plus echinacea and vitamin C but I can't find them anymore.
Echinacea helps to boost your immune system which helps your body to fight the cold, so you tend to feel better faster.
I'll be taking echinacea along with the zinc for a few days because my son and his girlfriend visited me last Thursday and she was catching a cold. He probably was, too, but didn't have any symptoms on Thursday. Today, my nose has been running practically all day. It has also been raining all day so I'm not sure if I'm catching a cold or if it's just the weather making my nose run. Just in case, I started using the Cold-eze and will start taking echinacea tomorrow. (Actually it just turned midnight so just change "today" to "yesterday" and "tomorrow" to "today". LOL)
Hot tea with honey and lemon helps soothe the throat, plus helps to loosen up mucus and eases a cough. If you put some whiskey in it (hot toddy) you might be just as sick but you won't care as much!
Oh, drinking lots of water helps to thin down mucus making it easier to breathe with less coughing. If you do get a bad cough, inhaling steam for 5 minutes works wonders! I had to do that when I had pneumonia once and it cleared out my lungs and sinuses like magic! You might cough quite a bit right after the steam but, once the coughing eases, you'll be so much clearer!
I certainly hope you feel better soon, no matter what you take!

Hey Chevee~ There really isn't much you can do for a cold, as
you probably already know! Mostly it is just annoying and miserable
and uncomfortable! The best thing to do for it is to drink plenty
of orange juice, tea (green if possible) and get plenty of rest!
If you want to take over the counter stuff that's fine too if
it makes you a bit more comfortable! If you have a stuffy nose,
I use straight saline solution nasal spray! And have lots of
hot soup too! Feel better soon honey! Take care! Hugs, Opal

I usually just tough it out and carry on as normal (or as normal as I can) until it eventually disappears. They are no hassle for me, and I rarely even get them. In fact, the last one I had must have been about 4 years ago

I take some mucinex type med, usually store brand. Generic claritin, and a generic decongestant. I take good old aspirin for the aches and pains. I trust it more than acetaminophen products (tylenol). I then drink lots of juices, especially pineapple, and eat spicy foods. Salsa is good, and horseradish. Chicken soup with garlic and onions and salt and pepper. I hope you get to feeling better soon. I also really like Fisherman's Friend brand throat lozenges. They taste nasty, like licorice, pepper and mint all combined, but they will clear you up. I really prefer just to try to wipe it out with spicy foods in the day time and only take meds at night to sleep.

Nope, aspirin is acetylsalycylic acid, and is of similar properties as the extract of white willow bark. Tylenol is acetaminophen. Aspirin is an anti inflammatory, acetaminophen works by blocking pain signals, but scientists are not quite sure how. The biggest risk with aspirin is bleeding because it has anticoagulant properties, it is irritating to ulcers and to the stomach lining. On the other hand that is why, for men, aspirin therapy is effective in preventing heart attacks. It helps dissolve blood clots. That is why expectant women are steered toward Tylenol, which does not cause bleeding, rather than aspirin, especially in the last trimester. I still personally do not care for acetaminophen, find it ineffective and am aware that it damages both liver and kidneys. Aspirin is also effective in preventing some types of cancer, specifically colon cancer. None the less, it is better to take as little as possible.

I take a combination of Contac daytime tablets, Claritin tablets, and Tylenol Sinus tablets. I don't take them all at once, but one kind one day, and another kind another day, so that I do not become immune to one particular kind of tablet. this has worked quite well for me.

I tried a whole bunch of stuff the last time I was sick.
Honey helped some, chili powder helped a lot. I put a little chili powder in almost everything. I have some stuff to rub on my body for aches and pains. Tiger balm is good. Pain patches are good.
I was only taking tylenol nighttime so I could sleep. Now I'm worried because I still need sleep when I'm sick and what do I do?

take hot lemon juice upon waking up and anytime with in the day, you may also take garlic supplement to strengthen your immune system.Avoid blowing your nose hardly, instead just softly dry your nose with a tissue or handkerchief. If your nose is clogged, try mixing 3-5 drops of eucalyptus oil in a cup of warm water, cover your head with towel and inhale the steam. You may also try drinking green tea.hope this will help.

First of all, double the dose of your vitamin C, say a thousand mg. a day if you are sick. For symptoms of cold, I'd buy Decolgen and Neozep at the same time. I'd take these two altogether, and if the cold has just started it usually is controlled the moment I take medicine on day one.

I don't take any meds for colds. Just rest and I double my water and vitamin C intake, I nebulize my self with water and a little salt for nasal congestion. It worked for me, hope to you to. Get well soon!

During common cold i consume Echinacea which will increase my immunity power and i get rid of colds immediately. This is the best medicine to be taken well before cold attaks you. when you feel the symptoms of cold immediately take this supplement. It works best during that time.

Hi Chevee. I usually just drink plenty of liquids. I don't take medications when I have a cold, so I can't recommend any. Sorry.
Heck, even when I had the flu last year I didn't take anything for it. But then again, I couldn't take anything for it even if I wanted to as I couldn't hold anything down anyway.
I hope you feel better soon.
Happy mylotting!

Oh my gosh. I'm suffering the same thing right now. My main issue is that I have nose issues (sniffly, then plugged, the cycle never seems to stop!) and a cough..But the worst thing is that I just feel sluggish. Tired. Rather, EXHAUSTED. All the time! Even just right after I get up - I'm exhausted. It's upsetting to me because it's the weekend! And I don't just want to sleep and not do anything; but I've found that that's what I'm doing, unfortunately. Sleep has been the #1 thing to help me. Otherwise I've been drinking a lot of water. I've never been all that keen on taking a bunch of medications, but these Theraflu things work pretty well when you're sick! (They're drink mixes, similar to Alka Seltzer drink mixes..But better tasting. .. Not that I can taste all that much right now anyway!). I've been trying to get rest.. (Amazingly enough I've been sleeping for 12+ hours the past few days) and drinking a lot of water, and I seem to be getting better. But good luck to you! I hope you feel better soon.
