it sounds ideal to strengthen an existing relationship to have it ready for another "who knows what may happen" year.
but in my case, since breaking it off from the boyfriend a few months back... i'm not looking forward to restoring that relationship. it's enough for me now that we could remain friends after everything that has happened. my home is still open for him, but my heart isn't.
this new year, i'm not averse to the idea of having a new relationship. it's not my priority but it's not something i will avoid if ever i meet someone new. i think i have moved on. i'm meeting lots of people, though i'm still wary of rollercoaster rides... after having been on one for 4 years.

I would say this could go either way, depending on personal circumstances at the time.

If I meet new people, then fine, but just because I meet new people does not mean that I am going to forget the people I knew before. OK, if there was someone who was really annoying me, I might start the new year without them (and the offense would have to be really BIG for me to do that) but I don't go looking for new friends just because it's the new year, and I don't "toss" the old ones out either. I find people where I may, and keep the ones I love close.
