Usual foods that you have not tried, but you would like to.

I was watching Bizarre Foods one night. Some of the foods I wouldn't mind trying like Conch if it was already prepared. I think if a food doesn't look like the original, I could try almost anything. The rooster feet didn't look too appetizing because they still looked like feet. Some foods people won't try because of the name, like hemlock (poison hemlock or water hemlock is not the same as edible hemlock), stinging nettle (you collect it with gloves or by going underneath it-there are many videos on youtube about stinging nettle, sumac (there is poisonous sumac, but there is also non-poisonous sumac like there is poison oak and non-poisonous-after a fashion-oaks) and so on. But the sound of a food doesn't bother me as much as the looks of some foods. If it looks OK and I taste it and it tastes bad, like cooked spinach, I don't want it again. But over the years, I've learned that some things are an acquired taste like saurkraut. I ate one bite everytime my Dad had some and I learned to like it. Some things like spinach, I can eat in a pasta dish. Some things like chickpeas in hummus or eggplant in babagnosh (spelling?) I like because I don't taste them, but I taste all the wonderful flavors and the texture has been changed. So would you try anything reguardless of how it looks, the name of it, the texture, etc. as long as you knew it was edible?

My boyfriend and I watch Bizarre Foods all the time! I must say that there are some foods I would not eat no matter what! For instant the Racoon and opossume(spelling) cooked whole. I've seen several things on the show that sounds nasty but I'd definatly try them. I mean I can eat Fried Chitterlings! (as long as I don't smell them cooking). We seen a show the other night and they cooked Bear! We will going to North Carolina this summer(where the show was aired) and I'm definatly going to try me some Bear! So I say bring on the Bizarre Foods!!

Hubby still talks about cooking an armadillo while on patrol in the Army.

Make sure the person that cooks the bear know what that person or those people are doing. We had people land in the hospital right and left one year because of undercooked bear barbecues. I, personally, was taught to cook a brisket of bear in a crockpot all day. I went to a wild game class led by a female Forest Ranger and she said that people don't cook it enough and end up sick. So be careful. Yeah, bring on the bizarre foods! Does GardenGery's hubbie say what armidillo tastes like and did he like it?

She had me put so much barbecue sauce on it that it tasted like red meat with barbecue sauce.

I like cooked spinach - but I don't like sauerkraut. I don't like sesames, so I don't like hummus because of the sesame flavor to it. I do like eggplant if it is cooked right - we grilled some and it was YUMMY!!! I don't like mussels, I do like oysters. In fact, the roomie once tried some mussels too and didn't like them - and not because I said I didn't like them - she too found them - odd flavored, however, my cousin loved them. don't think I'd like chicken feet - I'm kind of like - I'm just NOT going to work that hard for a little bit of meat - its why I don't like ribs either - they taste FINE, they just are too much work to eat! Don't do bugs, at least not land bugs - I do like shrimp but I don't like lobster - kind of wary of crabs - do they taste more like shrimp or lobster? it they are sweet like lobster I probably wouldn't like them.

Oysters are a weird texture. They remind me of snot. Mussels are a stronger texture. I like country style ribs where there is actually some food on it and there are country style boneless ribs. They're all food. That I really like. Crabs are like sea water tasting, more salty than sweet. I like them, but that's because I'm not supposed to have salt. Never good justify the price of lobster for the taste. There is other seafood that I like better and is cheaper.

So do we, in fact we taught a friend who got great joy out of then turning around and teaching her mom! I guess you don't expect someone from Arizona to know how to make cocktail sauce - but I'm from back east after all... and my dad worked thru the depression in his parent's restaurants - he was a pretty fine short order cook.

We make our own, ketchup and horse radish. Buy a bottle of each and mix per taste. That's our cocktail sauce. Strange that I can't have tomato sauce, but add horseradish and in moderation, I can have some.

Would be fruitless for me to try new foods now and really enjoy them but I would if there was nothing else to eat. I lost a good part of my taste when I had an accident a few years ago. Many foods taste very bland and dry as a result. I pretty much stick to the basic foods and drinks I loved prior to the accident.

That's too bad. My husband can't smell, so he is missing some of the taste as well. I read that we all have some deadening of tastebuds as we get older. My hubbie is always asking me what he's eating if I don't say, "This is beef. This is pork, etc." On the other hand, I can tell you what the neighbors across the road are eating because I can smell it. Take care and thanks for responding. Have a wonderful day!

I just finished a bowl of wonderful butternut and chestnut soup. I have like butternut squash as a vegetable dish, but the IDEA of it as a soup was not appealing to me. The LOOK of it is awful, but it is so satisfying and filling and warm. I tried it at a Horticultural event we attended. We make it regularly here now. So yes, at least sometimes, I will give things a try in spite of texture and appearance. Today, when it was too thick, I thinned it with milk, and we put a rosemary and garlic seasoning over it, and it was just the right amount of seasoning.

That sounds really good to me. I have had different versions of three sisters soup. Native American, corn, squash or pumpkin and beans (like navy beans). Sometimes with walnuts or sunflower seeds. Sometimes Eurpeanized (?) with milk and butter. I love it, so your soup sounds great to me. Thanks and take care.

Yes, Bizarre Foods actually filmed here one time. I would like to try snake, and afew exotics things I probably shouldn't mention or I will get a lot of flack. Would love to try some bakery bits from Paris and Vienna and Germany. All the chocolates and sweet meats. Love to try some of the old turn of the century recipes too.

We have to remember that turn of the century can mean 1999 now instead of 1899. At any rate, I know what you mean. Bakery items are soooo wonderful from Paris that when I went to Paris, I came back with a suitcase full! Haven't hat the others, but I would like pasteries from those countries, too. Snake I could eat if they disguised it. I can have disguised snail, but not ones with the head still on. They put tons of garlic and butter on the snails. I have no idea what they really taste like, esp. if they bread and fry them first. Thanks and take care.

Actually, I worked there and I found that I loved the breakfast burritos, salads, and parfait as well as the vanilla ice cream cone the best. I could have whatever I wanted every day that I worked there and I usually chose those. It's up to you. They gave us one meal up to a certain amount of $ every day that we could have and I always chose something other than those. Maybe because I can make my own sandwich or hamburger. Maybe because I worked overnight and in the morning it was breakfast, but even when they called me in during the day, I could watch the burgers being made and think that looks really good, but I still wanted other food when they offered it to me. But if you want a sandwich or a hamburger, then go for it. Each to their own. Maybe when you get your first payout from Mylot, a little reward for yourself. Thanks for responding and thank you for joining Mylot. May you start and answer many topics for years to come with many happy pay-outs in your paypal.

I have wanted to taste meats of the following animals: deer, kangaroo, ostrich, crocodile, rabbit, wild pig, pigeon which can only be found in certain restaurants. These are the less common meats which are more costly than the usual pork, beef, mutton we eat throughout the year. They say the deer and kangaroo meat are more healthy with leaner meat and lesser fat, while the rabbit meat is juicy and tasty. Perhaps I would just try them once out of curiosity.

Hi, Edge! I can't handle sushi because it's slimy. Textures mean a lot to me. I'm surprised you haven't had conch. It's an every-day thing in South Florida, and it's absolutely wonderful! However, we can't get wild conch without going to jail, as it's so good t's become a protected species. We get it imported from the Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean. It's generally chopped and added to a hot, spicy salsa. Sometimes it's made into great fritters. It's really, really good...

I've been to many seafood and regular restaurants up here and have never seen conch on the menu. Most of our seafood comes from the Coasts of Maine (esp. the restaurant Mainely Lobster), Canadian eastern maritime provinces, and Alaska for Alaskan salmon. Even our stores, I look at the seafood, and the fresh stuff in the fridges or freezers comes from Northern areas. I don't think we get any seafood from the Bahamas at all.Maybe something in a can. We seem to get sardines and such from all over the world, but I haven't seen that in a can either. Sushi is dicey. Because it's uncooked, you can get sick. I had it once and it was fine, it was the firmer, more fleshy fish. The next time, it was the more whimpy fish, it didn't taste all that great and I became ill. They make it pretty up here, but I've learned my lesson, I want my food fresh and cooked.

I don't think that I would try anything, I would not want to eat brain that just seems so disgusting to me, if something looks too gross I don't think I could eat it. I guess I would try tongue if someone else cooked it, but I would not want to to cut it up and cook it myself it looks too gross. I would try conch as well. I would not mind trying buffalo meat or osterich meat. I would never eat dog or cat never, ever.

That's quite a list there. I wouldn't want to eat brain either. I have had cow's tongue and it is very soft and tastey. Used to be given to old people who had trouble chewing and would probably still be good for that. I've had buffalo meat, very good, very, very good. Would love to have a freezer wtih lots of buffalo in. Never had osterich. Sound like like it might be interesting. I would not want to eat either of man's best friends either. Esp. since they're meat eaters and we should really eat vegetarians, the mad cow disease where they snuck in brains and other meat into cow food proved that.

I hate to eat any exotic food like those which is compose of the placenta of human babies from China, fermented fish which smell so nasty, insects and unknown animals which really insanely gourmet made in hell! I suppose to live by a simple diet than trying something which it say as an aphrodisiac and gives elixir when by just seeing it it may vomit at first sight and more if ever i swallow it. Some countries really have delight in trying out of this world cuisine which very disgusting which i would not less try even food is scarce. Whereas their is an exemption if the food is unknown and yet edible and does not taste nasty i may try a portion just for a fear factor adventure once in a lifetime!

Thanks, that was an interesting take on all that. Yes, some things are discusting and I wouldn't want to try them. But some places food is scare or money or both. Some cultures, like the Native Americans, believe everything is sacred and try not to waste anything. At any rate, thank you very much for responding and take care.

I know how to cook but not that much, i cook some non -vegetarian foods ,but i never try the vegetarians foods, because i don't like vegetarian that much ,so i cook only non- vegetarian, but one day i try myself , i spoils that so much,so i don't prefferd the vegetarian, mostly, i choose mostly non-vegetarian due to this reason.

Some of the Chinese restaurants have frog legs up here where I live. They batter them and deep fry them. It's a little different from chicken, but not much, then again, I have very discerning taste buds. Maybe the breading and the fry oil affect the taste. We are near the French Canadian border, so that's probably why we have some foods that are for French people in with our Chinese food. Thanks for responding. Welcome to Mylot, may you enjoy your time here and have many payouts. Take care, have a wonderful day.
