I remember there was a time when I was hooked on romance novels and even borrowed some from my sister.I used to love reading them inspite of the fact that they were often predictable and the guy would eventually get the girl despite some initial resistance.I guess I liked the fact the whole resistance-conquest theme.
Anyway I would spend hours in the bookshop over the romance novel isle reading and scanning throughseveral romance novels until one day a young lady gave me a look that said "GAY" and that was when I realised how many people viewed men who read these romance novels.Mind you ,he did not say anything but I read volumes into her look and it was then that it dawned one me how society might view a man who reads such novels.
Needless to say I have never been back to the bookshop to but romance novels.I may sneak a read from one of my sister's books but I would never be caught dead with one of these books in the streets.
So I am tossing this one out to both men and women .For men do you read these novels, please explain your answer .And ladies do you think men should read them and would you think differently about a man who reads these book, please explain your answer as well.

I am a writer. Not in English as it is not my native language. But I think it is ridiculous to even think that your genre depends on the kind of novels you like to read. And I think that people who put a tag on someone because of what they read are stupid and full of prejudice.
Many of the short stories (for adults) I write, are related in some way to the fairy tales we all know. Of course there is a twist but still they are present. That does not mean that I´m an infant.
When you go to a theater to see those romances like Pretty Woman and such, half of the people there are men. I doubt that there are more gays than in a thriller.
I´m the agresive type. I would have asked the young lady in the shop "Why are you staring at me?". I´m sure she would have blushed and would have been VERY uncomfortable. And she had asked for it.
Gay people are as respectable as heterosexual people, but they are not homosexual because of their reading habits. If I were you, I´d start reading whatever you wish in front of everybody. Why hide what you like? By the way, there are wonderful romance novel that are more profound than bestsellers. Check on Madame Bovary an Red and Black. Both were written a long time ago, but they have aged well.
Take care!

I never knew a man who read them but i don't see anything wrong w/it. I think it takes a good man to say he does. Alot of women like to read westerns which i guess people think they are for men but that doesn't make them gay. U read whatever u want to & enjoy.

Hello my friend ronnyb Ji,
So nice of you for your discussion on teh subject. I consider them in any family as evils to be read. They explore evils in any of us.Mind it our youngest child daughter is 34 yrs now, but none of my children are fond of reading any such novels, my elder son will not leave any news-paper, magzines etc, younger son is only interested to tread sports columns, it is all due to fact, that, we keptoff from such novels, though we both read social novels/deective novels etc.
May God bless You and have a great time.

to be honest I ain't a big book reader I would rather use my time doing other things if am honest.
The only books I have read are more sci-fi hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and lord of the rings to name my favourite 2.
But I don't think there is anything wrong with anybody reading any type of novel,
I guess it is just societies stereo types of what men and women should be that fuels this type of madness.
Everybody has preferences I might not like the car you drive etc etc but thats life and that is what make life interesting.

I personally think a man should be able to choose what books he reads and that people shouldn't judge. I tend to not read romance novels as much as crime novels. i also have a view that women can read whatever they want and do whatever they wanted so why can't men?
I think it is better for a man to read romance novels because it shows that they are human and have a caring sensitive side. I have the same opinion about men crying too. To me it takes a real man to cry and do things that is socially "wrong" because at least they don't follow the trend and become like every other man!

YES! Straight men should read romance novels, for one thing, it will give a man a deeper understanding of a woman and what her needs are. For another thing, they are fun, escapist literature that helps a person get away into a different world for while. I think men need this even more than women because typically when they experience stress they are not encouraged to 'let it out' with tears and emotions like women. Escaping into a totally different kind of literature is a good way to let go of the daily pressures.
I just read an e-book (PhotoJENic) which I loved so much, I wanted my hubby to read it too, so we are re-reading it together and he admits he's really enjoying it because he says it's not all corny and embarrassing like some romance novels and it's a really interesting read. A good book is a good book, whether it's a romance, a horror novel a suspense novel ... whatever. And why shouldn't a man be free to read any good book that interests him?
If you feel uncomfortable to be seen with a romance novel -- get yourself a Kindle or e-reader and you can keep your books on your 'cloud' instead of your device so you'll be the only one who knows what's there. I actually think it's a shame that a person of any gender should be made to feel embarrassed about something he or she enjoys. I remember when I was a kid, I was playing with some dinosaurs and my grandmother took them away from me and gave them to my male cousin because she said they were boy toys! I felt so humiliated that I was playing with the wrong kind of toys but I also felt resentful that I wasn't allowed to like something that I liked!

I think straight men, gay men or bi men should read whatever they want to read. I wouldn't personally read a romance novel as it is not a genre I am interested in reading about. With so many other available genres I feel confident that I will never have to resort to a romance novel. :D

Hi, ronnyb. Yes, men should be able to read romance novels just as any other person should as well. It is nothing wrong with a man reading an novel that has love in it. I would have not let the actions and attitudes about this woman deter me from buying an romance novel. You have just as every right as any other male or female to buy a book. I would not let that stop me...

I believe anybody can read what ever they like. Narrow mined people think narrowly. If your worried you can order online and use a book cover. Make a nice manly looking one to appease the narrow minded ones. Or you can have your sister get them for you.

I think that maybe you read more into her look than was actually in her mind. It's unusual to find a man that openly reads romance novels. However, when I do, I certainly DON'T think gay!!! I would think romance novels would be MUCH MORE interesting to s "straight" man than a gay man. The excitement of the female resistance & conquer should excite a "straight" male much faster than a gay male. A gay man should have NO interest in a woman's resistance as he doesn't find females appealing...whereas a "straight" male should be easily aroused by the same. I think you should be able to read ANY book you want to read WITHOUT feeling persecuted!!! Don't you think it's time you come out of the closet???

I think that men should be able to read romance novels with no shame. True, typically women read romance novels, but that does not make the genre exclusive to women and it doesn't make you gay. I don't think there should be social boundaries on what one person should read. For instance, I think grown adults should be able to read children's and young adult books without anyone looking down at them. A good book is a good book, no matter what target audience it may have.

It is good to see a man reading any book at all. I have no problem with a man reading a romance novel. In fact it shows that he has a sensitive side or he just may want to relate to his girlfriend who reads them or he simply just loves them. If more men read romance novels maybe they would be able to learn how to approach a female in an appropriate manner or a particular way or how to act on a date, or where to carry a female on a date or even the safe topic to talk about with a female companion. The problem with our society is that we tend to link the term "GAY" with a guy who is not afraid to show his sensitive side or to do things that are supposedly feminine. Mark you now, there are some who take this to the limit and deliberately do the so call feminine things to the extreme, to be noticed so as to be labelled GAY just to test a society which has a homophobic outlook.

I know a lot of straight men back in high school that loves reading Romance Novels and they even borrow some from the library. In my view, as an another straight men it was like a some normal people reading an average book and it seems the same with everyone else. I don't read Romance Novels since I just dont like the genre but I dont see anything bad about men reading romance novels.

A real man reads Whatever he wants. A real man can write anything he finds interesting! I'm sorry you felt that you couldn't go to the book store and read romances. I never got into them myself but I wouldn't think a man was gay just because he reads romance novels. Don't other men Know that the best way to meet women is to go Where they are? Being into romance novels could be the best ice breaker with a girlfriend! Besides don't romance novels explain how to be romantic? So read what you want to read!

The proper response to that girl is "Do you have terets syndrome because I've never met anyone that impulsively shouts out inappropriate and offensive stereotypes, but I can do the same... lets see hmm: superficial, close minded, b@!#h"
Men should read what ever they find interesting. No one has a right to judge your taste. My hubby loves science fiction, and I don't. I read the classics and he doesn't. It doesn't give either of us a right to put down the others taste in entertainment.
