If you have worked for both male and female bosses, which one did you like working for more? Why? If you have not worked for both, which one do you think would be a more effective boss? Why? Does it make a difference, isn't a boss a boss?

As a male, I have had both male and female bosses and have appreciated and respected both, I believe, as they merited it. Of course, every boss (and every worker) is an individual and every person has their own way of dealing with a relationship. Boss-worker is no less of a relationship than parent-child, husband-wife, boyfriend-girlfriend, friend-friend or friend-enemy. All of these can come into play depending on the characters of the boss and the employee and how their past relationships have affected them. I think that I would trust a male boss more for straight talking and to understand my strengths but I would trust a female boss more to understand my weaknesses and to place me in a position where I could be most effective. A boss is a boss, when it comes down to it, but a boss is also (or should be) a friend - of sorts - and there is always a difference between a male-male friendship and a female-male friendship. There can also be differences and caveats due to age (but I think not so much). When it comes down to it, one respects one's boss for what they do, not what they are, and it doesn't matter how old they are or whether they are male or female: it is how good they are at their job that matters (and how well they understand your role and how you perform it).

..Hi there owlwings, Your response as I read it, is full of logic and reasonableness. I would agree that a boss is a boss and has a responsibility for getting whatever work or projects done in the most effective way possible, so that he too can shine. If his or her employees do well, they do well and the company prospers. I have tended to prefer to work for males as a female myself. I found, when I was in the workforce, women were not as sympathetic to women employees as men were. That would seen strange, or maybe it was a one on one thing with the women bosses that I encountered. Thank you so much for such an insightful response. Take care.

Looking back on my working life, I have had, I think, three female bosses. As managers, I think I can say that they all did a very good job - on the whole, rather better than their male counterparts - and I can respect all of them for that. As my superiors, however, I seem to have had more relationship problems with them than with the male bosses I have had. I may have just been unlucky or I may have a basic distrust of female bosses (no doubt, if I had one, my psychiatrist would be able to explain it). I can only say that I always seem to have been able to relate better to male bosses than to female ones, even though I would acknowledge that females probably tend to make good managers.

...Hi again owlwings, This is just a thought because not everything is absolute. But I think that men are steadier than women, not to make charges against all women, as I am one. But there is a tendency of men being able to keep the ship moving without too much indecisiveness, that could be on an individual basis as well. But that's my thought. I also think that men and women, can't prove it, would rather have a male boss. "o) TIE (take it easy).

I have worked for both, mainly men bosses. But I've had my share of women bosses. I would have to say that I enjoy having a male boss better. They are always more on task and not so rude. Or maybe I just don't care when they are rude. When I had a woman boss, she came out of nowhere, and thought she was miss hot-shot. She got rid of me in order to make the company have all women working, even though I made them the most money and the customers liked me the best.

...Hi there chickenteeth, From what you have related, there must have been some kind of hidden agenda with your particular female boss. That's a shame, you want to feel that by doing your work the best that you can, you will be treated fairly. But that is not always the case. Sometimes personalities clash, and you seem to have been targeted without any reason, except as I said, some hidden purpose. Take it easy and thanks for sharing.

All of the other employees did not like her as well. She was younger than most of the veteran hair stylists, and she acted like she ran the place. Fresh out of college? I don't think so...haha.

I don't mind either way really. Having worked for both male and female bosses I can't really say there was much difference. I tend to get on better with a female boss but that may be due to me being a flirt and a bit of a joker so I could be a bit more cheeky than I would be with a male boss.

...Hi there yorkshirewriter, Nice to hear from you. Sorry for the time lag in reponding to you. It sounds as if you are able to get along with most bosses because of your congenial personality. The female bosses probably like you better as you are playful, as you mentioned, or a flirt. "o) Take it easy. Thanks for your reaponse.

..Hi there yugasini, In reference to your thought about it not making any differece overall, you are correct. A boss is a boss, they have a job to do, they will if they are effective, assess their employees strenghts and assign them tasks that they will be able to complete in an efficient way. This will make their boss' boss happy, and the unit or office will be productive. It is good that you have a source to talk to to help you with your work. Good luck with all you do. Thanks for your response. Take care.

There are some differences, but not major ones. I think it depends on the personality, not the gender. It's just how they manage their subordinate. I have been working for both female and male boss, and it's a great experience.

..Hi there alwayzzcitra, I think you are basically right, I think bosses approach their job in a way that they think, will help their employees perform well and get the job done so that they as bosses can be successful as well. Some personalities as you say will not mesh, but professional people will put that aside for the greater good if they are sensible. You on the other hand, judging from your reply, are someone who gets along with most people, so I would think your superiors have been happy to have you as an employee. Take care and thanks.

...Hi hawwisu, Welcome to the ranch, enjoy yourself. Well, I think you are in the group that I just got finished commenting to someone about, in this discussion, that I think most people would prefer to have a male boss. Not that a man does a better job as a boss, but there is a steadiness about a male boss, that may sometimes be missing with a female boss, just because we are what we are, females, sometimes more emotional than males. Thank you for your response. Take care.

For me, there is no difference between a female boss and a male boss. It depends on their attitude towards their subordinates. Some male boss are very effective to their position because they are so very authoritative, but some male boss are successful through persuasion. That situation will also be possible on female boss. its not their gender that matters, its their attitude.

...Hi there alfroi635. I find your answer to the discussion topic very well thought out and very well stated. I do think that you are quite right. It is the attitude and capability of the individual, not the gender specific that makes the difference. I also think that if a person is able to successfully motivate people, they will be a superior manager or supervisor. Thanks for your response, take care.

My boss is a female and I have nothing against it. Though in comparison, there are some difference in the way they manage us, still no problems with it. My boss is more strict in implementing the basic rules and policy in our organization. She is pretty much more scrutinized with our reports and outputs. But for me, its quite more effective in our organizations goals and having us more confident with our jobs.

Hi there Fulltank, So you have the experience of working for a female boss. Do you think that if she were a male, she would still use the same techniques anyway? Or is this her way of approaching life in general, by the books, so to speak? Or a third thought, do you think she feels she has to be strict in order to gain respect from her employees, because she is a woman? Thanks so much for your response. Take care.
