But it's hotels there are so expensive. Does anyone know what is the best time to go and it will not cost you an arm and a leg?

If you're traveling alone, it might be more economical to stay in a hostel.
That's where I stayed when I was there ten years ago. I stayed at the HI Hostel on Amsterdam Avenue, and I was really impressed at how clean it was, and how close to everything it was.

Hotels in New York are extemely expensive. Try one of the smaller ones where you get a tiny room or have a shared bath. The Pod Hotel is new and very popular.
