Or renters I suppose for that matter -
What is it about your home (or apartment) that made you say "YES! This is the place for me and my family!"?
For me - it was all the wood on the walls... in the kitchen/livingroom and hallway anyway - then the bedrooms hav wood panneling... doesn't look as nice, but we're working on it! haha - I loved the comfortableness that it had... and of course I loved the room!! We went from a single wide trailer to a 1900 sf home so we're in heaven!
It also came with a lot of ground, as well as a little 4wheeler track for my daughter, AND 2 apartments.
So it was kind of win/win all over!
So... what did it for you? What made you say YES!?

We just bought our second home in September and moved in at the end of October. We weren't even really thinking about buying another house, it just sorta happened! Our friend was looking so we were keeping our eyes peeled and when we mentioned this one ugly bi level on the hill he immediately shot it down. He's the kind of person who just wants to move in and live so this house really wasn't for him, it's a bit of a fixer upper. We still kept driving by it and looking at it though because it was the exact style we wanted, it has a nice heated two car garage in the back and a little one car attached garage, huge fenced yard. The house it really ugly inside and out but it is the perfect project because all the important stuff is there, it's solid as a rock. It also has two wood fireplaces which was a real plus. It will be a lot of work but it was a good investment and since we were able to turn a very tidy profit on our old place the sky is pretty much the limit.

I like projects :) I wouldn't mind having a project house once kids grow up and life calms down, etc.
But - I understand how you can be just drawn to a place like that. It may look ugly to your hubs and the rest of the world.. but you don't see the ugliness when you look at it - you see what it COULD be kind of thing? Right?
I desperatly wanted to buy this HUGE house a few months back. The yard was a little small, but it had an inground pool (that needed some TLC) a 3 car garage (that needed some TLC) - and the house was currently set up as a downstairs apartment and an upstairs apartment... which wouldn't have been to hard to switch it up. There was a fireplace downstairs and wood flooring (BEAUTIFUL) in the livingroom. A very full basement, etc.
AND it was only like $30,000.00. I know it needed a new roof and new soffet and facia (spellings???) but my husband didn't see what could be... and he didn't like the neighbor as close as they were... so we didn't do anything with it.
I LOVE the house we have now... and lets see, the other house was around $25-$30k and the house we bought was $125K.... we probably could have fixed it up for $100k. lol... but the husband didn't see it that way.
Congrats on your new home and have fun making this one your own!!

Wow, for 30K you would have room to do whatever you wanted! The place we bought is mostly in need of cosmetic stuff and a few minor renos. The most costly thing will probably be siding but with the curb appeal it would add the cost would totally be worth it. The bathroom needs a major revamp but the kitchen has been updated and all we have to do in there is new counter tops (the ones in there now are purple - yuck!) and a coat of paint. My husband is the opposite with projects, he definitely sees the possibilities and if anything will bite off more than he can chew!

I'm renting now. Well, I looked for a place where is safe first and then the size of the place with reasonable price. I'd always looked for a place whether house or apartment, just it has living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and that's enough. Just for renting anyway.

I know what you mean - anything that fits in your budget and keeps you warm, huh? :)
My first apartment was a little studio apartment in town... so one big room with a kitchen and oven in it. haha I worked it out :) I actually lived there close to 2 1/2 years!
Ahhh - those were the days :) lol

Personally, we were looking for our first marital home, and what we wanted was a space where we could grow into, and wouldn't run out of space too quickly.
So we got a 1313 foot apartment, which is quite spacious by the standards of our land scarce city state. It has 3 rooms, and 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen large enough to place a small dining table, which is rare in newer flats. our home was already 18 years old when we bought it but kept in good condition.
What sold it for us was that it was the only high-floor apartment for sale in the area that we had set our hearts on staying in. So we bought it, and the rest as they say, is history. :)

For me when my husband and I bought a house, we looked at price and location in regards to shops and schools.
We had a choice of 2 houses. One was a 3 bedroom with a pool. But it was a fair distance from the schools and shops. It would have been at least 15 to 20 minutes walk. The other house was a 4 bedroom with a 5 minute walk to shops and school.
We ended up choosing the 4 bedroom. I am so happy where I am. There is a lot of work to do but we can do the work at our leasure.

well, im renting... but i choose this place because it has a nice porch that wraps around the whole trailer. And it is a trailor but its on its own lot and has a foundation. It a double wide with three bedrooms. Oh, and it has a big tub!!
Top reasons I like it
1. away from the city
2. on its own lot
3. wrap around porch
4. pretty big
5. nice big tub

I don't blame you one bit!
We almost bought a nice double wide istead of a house! AND it was bigger then the house we have now! 2002 sf for $98000!!! But we wanted to put a basement underneath it, and we still had to run the sewerlines/waterlines/phone/electric, etc... so we would have had a nice bit of mula into it.
But I love those darn tubs they stick in those things! haha

Hello Shell,
Congratulations on your home purchase. Sounds like you found the house of your dream.
Im at my 3rd house. The 1st house we bought because it was priced right at the time. I didnt like the layout of the house at all but fell in love with a huge tree in the yard and how large the land was. We had a friend tore down the interior and it was all redone to our liking. We were very happy there.
My 2nd house was a brand new house. We had it built to our liking in a new development. After a few years, it had become way too noisy and we started looking for a quieter neighborhood.
My present house. I fell in love with the big kitchen. Its a big house and Ive acquired a lot of furniture over the years, so now I have the space for all of it. We have 100 trees on our property, its very quiet.
The only reason Id want to find another house, would have to do with the location.

We were torn between 2 houses when we bought this place. We were tempted by the spacious landing in the other one but the brick and beam fireplace was what swung us to buy this one - plus the fitted kitchen and bathroom (which are both pretty crap now as we've been here 23 years and dont currently have the money to renovate or repair)

We live in a subdivision type of place. And the houses are pretty much the same all over. Even the houses in neighboring villages, are generally the same. But the thing that made us choose this place is not what's inside the house. It was it's location. We live a couple blocks from Wal-mart, 3 or 4 blocks from Best Buy and Home Depot. A five minute drive to another strip mall. A 5 minute-drive in the opposite direction to the local mall. 15-minute drive to a state line. And yes, there are number of parks and hiking trails all around. Plus, the kicker in all of this, we live so close to a Chuck E. Cheese! My oldest, who was 3 years old then was completely sold!

I fell in love with this house the first time it was shown to me. It was built in the early 1900's. It has beautiful woodwork throughout and under the ugly carpets were the original hardwood floors. We rented for about 3 years and when the owners wanted to sell we jumped at the chance to own it. One of the greatest things about it is that it is located about a block from the football field where our son and his friends play, making our house the gathering place for alot of kids. It is one of the oldest houses in town and my husband grew up in this town, so almost everyone has a story about the house, the older residents around here have been very helpful in learning about the history of the house.
