Do you think it is ever too late to learn how to play the piano and read music.
What do you think the best way is. I saw an online internet course do you think it would be good or is it best to be taught by someone?
Is it best to learn on a proper piano or is a keyboard just as effective?

I personally tink that you should go for piano lessons, by a professional. It will safe you a lot of frustration and time. If you are a natural, it will be easy. I do not think the internet course will help you much. And play around on a keyboard if you can. It will help with most of the notes. Good Luck.

I have in the past taught myself to play songs so I think I am a natural.
What is the best and safest way to find a professional?

I have never played piano (or well, a couple of times just touched the keys, but you can't call it playing). Although, I learned to play bass guitar on my own. I used Internet lessons, tried to learn to play some new songs...
All I can say from my experience: it's never too late start learning something. All you need is a strong will to do that and courage to face the possible difficulties. Happy learning!:)

Thanks for that.
Next step now that I have located some online courses is to get a piano/keyboard lol.
But I have wanted to learn for a while and it is definitely on my list of goals.
