As I was preparing my son’s school lunch this morning, he asked if I could take the crust off the bread that makes his sandwich. Although it was added work, I obliged, because it was what he liked. Made me wonder what special requests have I made to my own food. (not at restaurants, of course). My mom came to mind. I had a favorite vegetable dish when I was growing up, but I would always ask my mom to put in a lot of meat in the dish so that it would look more like a meat dish, instead of a vegetable dish. Even when I was in university or was already working, every time I went home, I’d asked for the same dish. I know I could probably make it myself, but it is just more special if my mom made it. How about you? What special food or dish do you like prepared differently? How do you tweak it to your liking? Who made this for you?

Hello my name is Sarah and I am a picky eater! When I was a baby I refused to eat most things . I worried my mom so much that she took me to the doctor but he said was healthy. what I did eat was okay. When I was in school I had tuna fish sandwiches Every day for a few years. I never have cheese on my burger but I will have a cheese steak.Unlike you I Always order things plain . Burgers just the bread and the meat, even at McDonalds . And if there is cheese I send it back! To this day I eat the meals I Know I like, the way I like it.

Hi Sarah. I thought highflyingangel up there is like my dad. I'm mistaken, you are the one who's really more like my dad! That's how he eats his burgers. Just bread and the patty. I used to have trouble explaining it everytime we drive up through a McDonalds window. Now tuna fish sandwiches, if I can get my son to eat that for school, I would be happy. I've been trying to set him up to just have grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch at school. I figured, it'll be easy for me. First few days last week, was ok. Thursday, he just pick on it, and Friday he did not eat his lunch. How ever did your mother managed that? To just make you tuna for lunch?

You and my 8 year old are cut from the same cloth. He is so picky that currently his food list of things he will eat tops out at about 12. Not an hour ago he finished eating the same dinner for the 18th night in a row..plain spaghetti with parmesan cheese...he's been mixing it up at lunch lately though, today instead of the normal grilled cheese he wanted peanut butter with honey.

To this day I or my sister will say " Plain, Just the meat and the bread" when we drive thru at any of the fast food restaurants.Peanut butter and honey? Yuck! I would have peanut butter but not with jelly or honey. Honey is too sweet to me. And I like jelly in donuts but not in sandwiches. My mom just made me tuna each day for lunch from nursery school to was it 5th grade? then I just took bread and cheese , not a cheese sandwich mind you but bread and cheese separate. When I finally and I mean finally tried a grilled cheese sandwich I loved it. But I would have them hot , right from the pan.So I have no quick answer to give you. if your son is like me, he will try new things in his own time and Not before he is ready.

My great grandma made the BEST cole slaw!!!! I haven't like another cole slaw in the last oh... 17 years :) My Aunt is the only one who has the recipe and she won't give it up..... (insert bad word pertaining to women here... probably starting with a B) anyways. :) I was never wierd with the crust on sandwiches and such... but my brother used to pull his lunch meat sandwiches apart... pound the meat and cheese into the table as hard as he could... eat his bread, then peal the meat and cheese off of the table to eat it. Mom thought it was really gross for the longest time and wanted to yell at him for it - but then I think she just figured that as long as he was eating it that was good enough for her. haha Silly boys anywho

Oh - if you ever had the cole slaw you'd see what I mean :) And I never see this aunt... she's not even a blood relation aunt, she married into the fam - so... I dont' see hwo she's the only one with the recipe... But, I haven't seen them for over 3 years now. They are coming to my brother's wedding in a few months! But I don't think "cole slaw" is on the "items to bring" list for the wedding... darn!

Unfortunately, the last coleslaw that I had was from KFC. Have you seen that stuff? It looks like it's not even real. It looks like shredded plastic with some cream on it.

Must be a heck of a coleslaw! Why wouldn't your aunt give it up? You should ask her to make you a batch all the time until she gets tired and just gives you the recipe. I think I've seen what your brother does in a movie somewhere. You must have a very clean table after that!

I've never really asked for a lot of spices to be added to my food or anything. I know when I was younger I was the type to request crust off my bread though because I really wasn't found of it. However now, I will eat the crust I'd just prefer not too. I'd like to skip right over it if possible but whatever I'm not too picky.

I think you're like my dad. He doesn't want too many spices on his food. It's not even for health reasons, he just like it that way. And come to think of it, I've seen him take off crust from bread too!

Hey bounce! I think I like my spaghetti with meat sauce with more sauce than most normal people would like! My boyfriend always makes fun of me because I will eat my food in a bowl because I put so much sauce in it! He eats his on a plate with hardly any sauce on it! I also do the same with foods with gravy like meat loaf! I just love things to very juicy! He likes to just have a tiny bit of sauce or gravy where you can hardly see that he used any! I think that's the only weird thing that I do with my food requests!

I love that bounce! What a great name! That is exactly what my spaghetti in a bowl is! And, yes I need so many napkins too! I need to have paper towels to cover my whole shirt because I always drip it all over me! We are so much alike! Thanks for that great name!

I have a name for that spaghetti. I had friend when I was younger that everytime we went to their house, his mom would prepare spaghetti with lots of sause. And we'd call it soup-a-ghetti! I do like it once in a while. And I would it in a bowl too. But I just found that it takes so much napkins to eat it. Or do I just have a slobby-way of eating it?

Hi bounce, to the delight of our saint bernard the 8 year old here also has an aversion to eating the crust. One of my modified dishes is macaroni salad with tuna and peas, no one else but me like it that way. When we have barbecues my brother-in-law always makes a seperate bowl for me with those extra ingredients. My mom is the first one that ever made it that way for me when I was a teenager.

Oh! I've tasted macaroni salad with tuna. But not with peas. It does add to the flavor. I've also tried it with shredded chicken. I know that when I was young, I've attended some parties with these kind of salad. Like in an old dicussion of mine, in our house, I am the Saint Bernard that takes up all the aversion that my kids have. But, I can only take so much of bread crusts. Unless they are those crispy crust that are still good with butter.

As long as you don't drool like the saint bernard, its probably not that big of a deal. Shredded chicken is a new one, I've never tried that addition.

Hello Bounce, I think we all have a soft spot for our mom's cooking and of course, I think all kids have special requests about foods. I had a lot of requests, too many to tell you all about it lol. I dont know how it started, but my mom would make this beef and vegie casserole and we used to eat it all smashed up together. It looked like baby food but ...dont know why, I like it that way. Wont do this with anything else but this beef casserole......and still do it to this day. Mom would smash it all up for everybody, even my dad lol........Ive done it myself only after I left home. She would also cut off the crusts on my sandwiches.

That is interesting MagicalBubbles. I bet that for an outsider, a smashed up beef casserole, wouldn't look that at all pleasing. But since your family associate it with being a special dish, that is what it has become. Thanks for responding.

I always had to have the crust on my bread cut off to. The only time I dont mind the crust cut off is when I am dipping the crust of a grilled cheese sandwich is tomato soup then I can tolerate it. If I have peanut butter and jelly or anything like that I hate the crust on. In front of my kids though I dont complain I just eat it. They have never asked me to remove the crust luckily lol.

I bet if they did see you take off the crust, they would ask for the same too! Hmm... I've never had a sandwhich dipped in tomato soup. But it sounds like an interesting idea. I would want the bread toasted, and I would eat right away as not to make it soggy. Thanks.

Hi, bounce58. I like my peach cobbler made a certain way. I don't want to have it where it is loose and soggy like. I like for it to be firm. I like the pastry crust to be firm and not hard. I don't like it too sweet either. But my aunt always made it this way. I never complained to her about it. But, that is how I prefer to have my peach cobbler made.

My son has a certain preference when it comes to his food too. He likes for me to fix him an sandwich, but he does not want meat on it. He tells me that he just wants mayonnaise on his bread and nothing else. So, everyday he has an mayonnaise sandwich with no meat. That is his preference. And my daughter prefers to have her Pediasure warm and not cold. She even likes for it to be warmed up in the microwave too.

It's nice that we have our kids developing what they like and what they don't like in food. I'd like to think that it makes them a little bit independent. I don't know about the meatless sandwich and warm pedia sure drink, but your peach cobbler has made me hungry. Now, I'm craving for something sweet...

I love Peach Cobbler. It just has to be made a certain way. I hope that you can get your hands on some Peach Cobbler. I would love to have some myself.

Hi there bounce. I guess every one of us has it's own preferences when it comes to food, and each of us has various choices to various items on the table. My girlfriend for example doesn't eat spicy food, while i love to put pepper (white), hot chillies and hot ketchup on my pizza. I also prefer calamari when it comes to fish fingers instead of fish... it just tastes better for me, but my girlfriend prefers the other one :) I also loved my mom's cake, to bed she doesn't make it anymore. The brownies at least i now get from my girlfriend's grandma and they taste about the same so i know what one of the recipes my girlfriend should learn in the nearby future is :D

When I was little.. for some reason me and my sister always wanted our sandwiches or grilled cheese's cut.. into fours, diagonally. We were weird. I didn't mind crust (which is weird, because most kids seem to dislike it for whatever reason..) but it had to be cut a certain way! . Your son sounds like my half-sister, who also totally hates crust and won't eat any type of bread if there's ANY crust on it. *rolls eyes*. Kids will be kids, huh?

Hi maezee! So it is not uncommon? That kids don't like the crust. I wonder where these kids get that idea. You just made me realize that he also always want it cut diagonally. Sometimes, when I forget to cut it, he just picks and pinches the bread without really eating it. Another weird behavior!

I always liked the crust on sandwiches. I'm not very picky at all. I do a lot of sauce, dip, gravy on my foods and always ask for extra.

As immature as this sounds, when my mom makes me sandwiches she still asks me, "How do you want me to cut this?" I always want it cut diagonally into two pieces. I also think that every time I go to a restaurant I have some modifications such as: no onions, no bacon on my salad, etc.

I don't think it's immature. I think it's lucky! You're lucky that you have your mom there with you preparing sandwiches whenever you like. Thanks for the response.
