few ways on saving your electric, not sure what you are already doing, A) buy energy saving bulbs not only do they last longer than normal bulbs also use about half the power. B) turns lights off whenever they are not needed. C) If you have a kettle only boil the minimum amount of water that you need takes more energy to heat a larger volume of water up. D) If you have an electric oven make sure your oven is full. E) Turn all your appliances off at the plug so they ain't left on standby. F) buy higher rated appliances as the newer appliances are better on saving energy. G) install solar panels. Obviously F and G require investing.

Good Tips I want to buy some new bulbs but I was at the store where they had a good deal this week on five of them and they were all out. I got a raincheck and plan on sometime this week to check out if they got some more in. The sale price was great too it was 5 of them for 5.99 which is a little over a dollar a bulb.

the energy saving bulbs are a great way and they work out a bit more to buy but should last 3-4 times longer all my lights have energy saving bulbs in.

Hi Beeny, You're right. you can replace your old bulbs with that one. it's quite expensive but will surely pull down you meter and it will be reflected immediately in your next bill. these are all nice suggestions i can use some of it at home!

I know you are based in the US so I'm not sure how all this "billing" works. However, in the UK you can switch companies that - generally - amalgamate both the Gas and Electric into one bill. One company could be cheaper with the Electric and another the Gas. It seems that your bill is just for electricity. Can this be done? Can you switch companies?

I switched companies and after six months they doubled my bill! I shall be switching again as soon as I can.

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. Mum switched from BT to Talk Talk...what a mistake! They've only gone and signed her up for broadband and she hasn't even got a computer! £30 connection charge too! She's on the phone to them now and I hope to God it gets sorted out because things like this can make us ill!

we have a lot of ways. i bought a small lamp so that when i am alone, i do not need to use the light with the bigger wattage. we turn off the fan when no one is there, also the lights. at night we also pull the plugs because it can also consume electricity even when the appliance is off. we can also sleep earlier so as not to use the light then wake up earlier to take advantage of the sunlight hope this helps

OH how I wish mine was that cheap! Unplug things you are not using. I have heard too that if you turn down your heater just one degree you will save 10% on your bill, I thought that was awsome but I didn't think my heater was high enough to begin with so I never tried it. I freeze very easily. Do use the energy saver bulbs (not sure of the correct name of them) heard they work. Good luck to you!

Turn off the lights when not in use. Only turn on the air-conditioner when it is necessary or use electric fan if the weather is cool enough. Turn off the flat iron before ironing the last 2 remaining clothes

We pay about $60 a month for electricity and that's expensive enough. Our bill will end up going down a bit I think when Summer comes, at least I hope so because that means we'll end up turning the heat off. So, somethings we do to cut down on our bill are: We've switched to CFL lightbulbs. We never leave lights in other rooms on. We unplug appliances that are not in use like the microwave, toaster, etc. If we go away for a weekend we unplug just about everything except for the fridge and one light or so. If no one is home during the day, we turn down the heat or the AC or turn if off if possible. That saves on heating costs because it's not heating a home where someone is not. Also, at night, we turn down the heat or ac because we can cover up to keep warm. No point in using a lot of heat if we're not running around the house. We've also bought thick curtains and hung those in certain rooms to help the heat/air from escaping or from letting the cold/air in. You lose a lot of energy that way. Also, check your doors and windows and put in weather stripping if needed because of the same principle.

What we do in the morning is to close all the lights but we open all the window to have a light inside the house. We watch television starts at 12 noon end at 3pm. Turn on the television again at 6pm onwards. If the weather is cold we turn off the electric fan. We do that for everyday and we save a little amount from it.

I would say unplug appliances when not in use and don't leave the switch at the plug source on. When you finish watching TV switch it off at the mains instead of leaving it on 'standby'. Electricity oozes out when you leave it on standby, which is not necessary since you are not watching anything anyway. Also, airconditioning is the main culprit. If you can do without it, then switch that off, and you will be amazed at how much the bill goes down.

I reduced my usage by changing to the new low energy light bulbs and getting into habit of turning lights out when I leave the room. If you heat with electric then turn thermostat back 2 degrees and get blanket to ward off chill.

My energy bill isn't all that high. I unplug everything when it isn't being used. Even if you have the power off, if it's plugged in it wastes electricity. Also change to energy effecient light bulbs and turn off all lights when you leave the room or during the day when the sun as light the house. Try to not do lots of little loads when you do laundry, a full load is better than half full loads.

Turn the thermostat down on heat and up on air conditioning. Every degree spells out to be about 3 percent on your bill. Keep filters clean. Keep fins clean on a/c also refrigerator. A full refrigerator uses less power than an empty one.Freeze even bread is better than nothing. Wash only when you have a full load. Use a clothes line. It will dry even on a cold day if it is sunny. Stop all dripping faucets. Get new energy light bulbs. If it is sunny, turn the lights off and open window shades. Lots of light comes in. Fix meals that do not require cooking sandwiches.Get a showerhead that limits water flow. If bath, just enough water to get clean. Well, you get the idea.

when watching TV or doing any thing that doesn't require much attention, it is advisable to take off the lights. you can also use some highly efficient energy saver lights and it is available in various home item stores. most importantly,, don't forget to unplug appliances when not in use!

Try unplugging everything except the fridge, when you are not using them. It is a pain to do but it does work if you do it everyday.

Most are good here, and you can get really good deals on CFL's, and they use 13W as apposed to 60W with the same light, now my math ain't the best but that is less then 1/3 the power. If you get them on sale all the better, and the fact that most are guaranteed for at least 20000 hours, compared to 5000 hours as with incandesant, its a no brainer. Aside from that, you can set your thermostat lower(if you use electric heat) even if you use gas, 2 degrees lower can save you a ton. OR two degrees higher for your air conditioning. Now, everyone mention solar panels great idea, especially if you invest in the converter that gives you a "rebate" for the electricity you don't use. Also, new insulation in the home. I wouldn't be able to afford $70 dollars a month either, a few people mentioned paying over 200...that is ridiculous. Must live in mansions or are getting ripped off or something is shorting. Anyways, those are your best deals, and for turning of power at the outlet, get some cheap surge protectors, and just use the switch on their for your TV Station and Computer Station, not only will it save electricity it was stop power surges from wrecking your entertainment. Cheers.

I keep everything unplugged if I'm not using the applicance. I changed all my light bulbs to the energy saving type. The ones that they sell to "go green." I also only wash clothes twice a week and mostly in cold water. I keep the thermastat between 68 and 70 usually depending on how cold it is outside. At night I bring it down to 65 or 68. I only leave one light on in the room that I'm in. I don't leave lights on in every room. I do not leave the computer on all the time. I shut it down completely every night. When you have something plugged in the wall and not using it, it is still pulling juice which makes your electric bill go up. I hope this helps somewhat.

Of course there are the obvious ones- turn off the lights when you're not using them and don't leave them on all night, turn of the TV cable box when it's not being watched, never leave chargers plugged in for more than they need to be and switch to those spiral energy-efficient light bulbs. but I'd also reccomend that you unplug big appliances (washing machine, dryer, toaster, TV) overnight or however long you go without using them.
