I think it is sad. A scared girl sat there writing her diary while in hiding from Nazi raids, staring at this tree to help her stay ground with the world outside. The tree is thought to be between 150 - 170 years. Thus, this is the cycle of life, right? But is it still sad to loose something of physical strength that provided it's strength to a such a touching person in history?

That is sad. It's interesting for me to come by this discussion today after watching the movie freedom writers http://www.freedomwriters.com/ yesterday. It was really a good movie. In the movie the students were inspired by Anne Frank's book.

I have wanted to see that movie!!! :) But my partner and I are not in agreement. He likes the blood and gore movies, I like the chick flicks, comedy, and inspiring movies. ha ha

Can it be listed as a national landmark or anything else that may be able to protect it? How do they know that this tres IS her tree?

Because the place where she stayed is protected. It is the tree she spoke of in her book because it was the only window not blocked to prevent the outside from seeing movement within. It is a landmark. However, it has become diseased and will be cut. They do have plans of replanting. But to me...once the tree is gone, it is no longer the tree she saw. Here is a link to an article about it. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/15/world/europe/15briefs-amsterdamtree.html

I have heard this... I think its sad too.. I am living in The Netherlands so I'm very close.. The tree is ill and needs to be cut down so its the only option... I wish it was different... The Anne Frank house is located here in Amsterdam.

When a tree is no longer able to support itself it needs to be removed. It is truly sad that it is a tree that holds such historical value.

Thank you for your post and support. I just wanted to see if there was anyone else that had read Anne Frank and even though it is understood, a little sadden to see such a loss. Thanks again.

Anne Frank tree - Anne Frank tree
For your viewing, a copy and paste from AP News. View of the attic window, left, from where Anne Frank longingly looked at the chestnut tree, right, as seen in the courtyard behind the canal-side warehouse, now turned museum, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Wednesday Nov. 15, 2006. The ancient chestnut tree that comforted Anne Frank while she was in hiding during the Nazi occupation of Holland must be cut down, the Amsterdam city council said, after experts discovered the tree had been attacked by an agressive fungus called the horse chestnut leaf miner. I honestly have never read the anne frank diary. i've heard of it. Seems like we was suppose to read it when i was in school but i dont think I did. I know the general idea of her diary but thats about it. Can someone tell me how it ended? How did she die? Did the Nazis find her or her family?

I do belive they made some cuttings of the tree so it is kind of the same tree that would be growing in the same spot. I do wish they could use it to make something to remind people that it was that tree something like a sculpture or something. It is sad as most of the stuff related to her is gone as it were taken away by the germans. I do plan and wisit the house one day.

It is truely sad that such a symbol of strength that Anne Franks drew her spiritiual strength from has to be cut down. So many days she sat writing in her diary and looking at that tree which gave her comfort. It was her only source to the outside world. Yes its sad and even tho they may plant another tree in its place it will never be the same, it will not be that special tree that Anne Frank saw from her window, it will be gone.

I hadn't heard of this before. If the tree is diseased as you say, it seems there's no choice but to cut it down. When I first saw this comment I figured the tree was being cut down to make way for a condo development of something! At least it's being replaced with another one.

I did not know she had a tree. I read the book many time's but I do not remember a tree. Maybe it's been a while or I am getting old.lol. I think it would be sad for someone to cut her tree down. That is part of history.

I think it is sad. At least it seems they are trying to keep the thought by planting another one.

anna franks book is part fiction and non fiction..elaborated by hollywood but the truth remains she was part of the war back then but remember something else.. there are many stories about what happened during wwII and the suffering of many children during that time but not mentioned..luckily anna frank wrote a dairy in her short life and by chance it was found.. whether a tree is cut down or not her memoirs are forever etched in the minds of those who remember as a tree is only a symbol of anna frank

That is really depressing! And, I agree you once the tree is gone, it is no longer the tree she saw. I wish that they could some how keep the tree up with like a pole or something! But, its the circle of life!!!
