Mine is a Sony Vaio Desktop Computer that I bought in September 2001! I was lucky in the fact that I had this mind-set in the shop of wanting to buy the dearest available, hoping it "won't be obsolete in 6 months!"
Originally it had a corded keyboard and mouse but I still have the original, seperate speakers plus flat screen monitor that has a 1024 x 768 resolution...which was good in 2001 because most were 800 x 600 (or something like that). I would say the screen is the best I have ever looked at and nothing I have had at work in the past can compare with it. Let's face it, Sony do make great televisions so I figured it would be the same with computer screens and I'm right in that assumption. I can honestly say I've never had a headache whilst using this computer so, whilst it cost me an arm and a leg to buy I reckon I've got my money's worth out of it.
It's had AOL dial-up installed at the start but now has BT Broadband. It has been serviced only twice in its lifetime and currently has Windows 7 on it from John's work (don't worry, he just downloaded the disc onto my computer, put it back in its box and returned it)and he should get perks from work because they're Fascists...but that's another story!
This computer also has sentimental value as I met my John on it in 2003...so when it finally "gives up the ghost" I shall be most upset. Oh, I've also managed to upgrade its memory from 256MB by another 1GB as it was running very slow some months ago.
So, tell me my friends, how old is your computer and what brand is it? Doesn't have to be a desktop like mine, could be a laptop, netbook, anything computerised but NOT 'phones like iPhones. Interested in Apple computers though as John has an iMac(one of the older CRTs) but it's very good, nice screen.

Interesting story :) As for me.. My computer is fairly new. However, it does not have a brand since its a custom computer that I built myself (with the help of my boss at a computer place). I bought all the parts and assembled it in May of 2009. Its quite a nice computer: Has a good graphics card, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a good mother board, an AMD quadcore CPU, 1TB hard drive, and a pretty nice computer case that used to hold my old computer but I reused for this computer build. Im not sure if Im forgetting any computer parts but the point is its a pretty good computer build and it only costed around $600 or so.. Saved quite a bit building it myself.
In July of 2006, I also helped build my computer with this same guy that I did last year. And I bought my first computer in December 2003, when I was 13, and it was a Compaq and only lasted about 2 years and a little bit.
Hopefully I didnt ramble on too much haha and good discussion! :)

Same here, a friend built mine, and we got the whole thing set up yesterday. Sounds like it has the same features as yours, only with a 650 hard drive. Loving it so far, much faster than my six-year-old laptop.

I'd forgotten to include "self-build" computers as I knew someone who did that, mainly so it had a massive memory for all his gaming that he got up to...and no, you haven't rambled on, I prefer "more than once sentence" answers my friend, so thank you!

I have a rebuilt Dell, it replaces the 2001 Dell I used to have, but the old one couldn't keep up with the new wireless router.
I have a hand me down Kogi screen. we have 3 computer hooked to the router - 2 wireless and one (the roomie's work computer) hard wired.
I have been known to use my iPhone to do things, but not when I'm home - I hate that little keypad on it!

I've used Dells at work (when I used to work) and I don't think they're as good as the ones that are bought by the general public...especially the screens, they were horrible. I'm glad you have found a Dell you like, well done my friend.

Yup I had Sony Viao desktop too in 2001, but I no longer use it do to many things broke down (CD-R drive broke down), but it still functions I just don't use it anymore.
I have HP Pavilion 9150e 1.80 GHz (don't let that fool you it runs fast!)
4 GB RAM, Windows Vista, given a 3 rating on Windows Experience. It will be a year this October 2010 that I had the computer. Here is a more detailed description of the computer:http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/hp-pavilion-a6700f-phenom/4505-3118_7-33463396.html
I have attached a picture, too. I don't have a flat screen monitor, I use the old monitor that I still have. Hehe.

This is a bit funny topic. I'm 19 and my parents bought our first computer when I was 10 years old. So it's very old already. We have done a bit of upgrading to it but still haven't completely replaced it. It's an HP computer. I have a 1005ha eee pc netbook that I bought a few weeks ago so this is a good addition. Hopefully in March we can buy another computer but still, my parents have no plans of losing that old computer. Just like yours, we're keeping this for sentimental reasons.

How sweet, I'm glad I'm not on my own lol! The other computer I was considering was an HP but I do like Sony televisions so I think that probably influenced my decision in the end. They were the only 2 LCD computers in the shop, the rest were CRTs. How things have changed since then! Thanks for your response, it's much appreciated.

Yes, I have heard of the Dell Inspiron. My in-laws have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that at least 3 people fight over to use...the father-in-law, his daughter and her son. No wonder he's having to upgrade his broadband package as there's too much stuff downloaded onto it now! He's only had it about a year or so!

Mine is a Shuttle XPC P4 2.23ghz bought the same year as yours, with a AOC monitor. The first three years, it was trouble-free, and thereafter minor problems due to virus and tear-and-wear parts. Overall, really worth it as compared to other generic type.

I have a HP Compaq nx-6125 notebook computer which I bought in 2006. It supports up to 1280 x 960 resolution if I remember correctly. It runs Windows XP at that time but I've since upgraded it to Windows Vista and now Windows 7. Though the battery life has degraded and now can only use up to 1 hour on a full charge, I've not met with any problems so far with this computer. It has been my most reliable and sturdy computer ever, even though the paint and plastic laminating has come off.

You should see the state of my cordless Advent keyboard lol. Does the job though, I can type fast on it...some keyboards are designed to slow us down I'm sure, they are so badly designed. The mouse annoys me though as, despite it having Duracell batteries in it, the battery life is only about a month or so. With your computer, I know this is a really silly question but is it possible to plug it into the mains or is it battery operated only? I ask this because my father-in-law seems to have his Toshiba laptop plugged in all the time, which kinda defeats the object of it being portable I guess. Thanks for responding.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop and it is 2 years old. It has got Windows Visa on it. I use it for the Internet and emails. I had a computer before it that I got rid of. Now I have also got a net book and that was made by Packard Bell. It has got Windows 7 on it. It has a 250Gb hard drive. I use it outside my home because I have got mobile Internet. At home I have got wireless Internet.

Thanks for that infomative response, it's much appreciated. Yes, I suppose I'm limited having a desktop computer and nothing portable but at least it forces me to stay off the 'net for a while when I go and stay at Mum's for a few days at a time.

I sort of learned a lesson when I bought my first two computers because I went for the most expensive both times yet they still managed to become like dinosaurs within a few years of buying them.
The computer I use now is an Acer desktop, got sick of using laptops, which is only a year old. It's not the most expensive machine but one with a very good spec for what it cost. It has 4gb of memory and can be expanded to 1tb but also has about 600gb of hard drive space which I doubt I will ever fill up and a bluray drive which is a gread addition as well as numerous other things. I'm running Windows Vista on it which was quite a change as I had used XP ever since it came out and had got accustomed to it.
The best thing though is that I am older and wiser when it comes to computers and although this pc may have some technical limitations if you wanted it for gaming, which I don't, it has plenty of potential for being upgraded which will means it should last a lot longer than all my other ones.

Yes, that is a valid point you make about being able to upgrade. I was lucky in that I could do that with this machine so the initial outlay was worth it in the end. The computer was built with the future in mind and I reckon I bought it when it first came out. Some computers may look like new models but they're not. Goodness knows what I will come out with in Comet the next time I buy a new one but, hopefully, it will be a long time off yet!

I have a desktop that was built for me in 2004, and a Dell laptop that is almost 2 weeks old. My desktop has XP on it and the laptop which I am using right now, it has Windows 7 on it, which I really like. The laptop has a pentium chip in it and a 500 gig hard drive, which is probably more than I need, but the price was right, so that is why I bought it. In fact it ended up being cheaper than the desktop. I don't use the desktop, now that I have the laptop, but I am sure not going to get rid of it, since my son in law built it for me. He did a very god job, and I just can't part with it. Take care, and happy mylotting.

hi Janey,
I bought my computer on october 4,2008---it was an unexpected birthday gift--which was an assembled one---with an view sonic LCD screen and the rest of it is an combination of all the best we have and then onwards this became part of my life---and then i started watching movies like crazy and then playing games and my new obsession to make money online brought me in here.
My PC do trouble me some times---coz it had surprised me with a couple of jerks but they were really small though.great day.

Sorry to hear you are not happy with your computer. I don't think warranties last very long with them do they, otherwise you may have been able to swap it for another computer for the same price. I am sure the next one will be better and I hope you can afford a new one very soon.

Dells do have a variety of colours to choose from don't they? Sony seem to have gone down that route too. For some reason I like the pink versions...but I do like the colour blue as well lol...oh, and red!! I'd be alright trying to choose a colour wouldn't I?

Apple computers are expensive my friend but I have been told by my husband (many times) that they are NOT prone to viruses like PCs are. Having said that, he replaced his old Mac for a new one (still the CRT style) whereas my PC is still going strong lol. Mind you, his original Mac was probably older than this machine, to be fair. When I bought this computer I was lucky in that there were only two machines with LCD flatscreen monitors...and that's what I wanted. I did have to pay a premium for that, though because it was new technology, now it is commonplace so there is more choice. If you liked the brand of computer when it was new I suggest you stick to the same as that is what I will do when the time comes to buy another one. Hope this helps...oh, and welcome to MyLot!

Hi, Janey It sounds like you're knowledgeable about computers.
I have a Compaq Presario V3000. It' a laptop with Windows Vista as operating system. That's all I remember
I bought it on installment more that a year ago, 12 months, zero-interest. It has been fully paid, thank god.
Have a nice day!

Oh, I don't know about being knowledeable lol. I'm not that technical with them. For example, I'm not clever enough to have my own built like some have in this discussion. They have my admiration believe me. When I bought this computer I just went for the dearest and hoped for the best. Didn't really know much about memory and all that caper. I've just been fortunate that my hubby found out there was an extra memory slot on the tower so an upgrade was possible. Left to me I wouldn't have a clue haha!
