Do you visit your local Art Gallery?

My 16 year old daughter decided to visit our cities Art Gallery today. We took the bus in as the gallery is in the city centre. What a pleasant time it was. It has been years since I have been to our art Gallery. Im not talking about an art gallery where one buys paintings. This is our State Art Gallery for display of famous paintings. There are at least ten roooms of displays. My favourites would be the Australian paintings by local artists and Aboriginal paintings. Our local artists have produced some magnificant scenery paintings. We have some beautiful fauna, and in particular are the scenes of the Flinders Ranges. Aboriginal Paintings very often consist of an impressive array of dots, that form a mystical picture representing the Dreamtime. I will include a photo here that I am legally allowed to copy of an Aboriginal Dot painting. What does your local Art Gallery specialise in, if any? What paintings are your favourite?

There is an art gallery outside of Pgh. (about 30 min. away) but I have never been there. If I was, it was when I was very little and don't remember. There is also a great museum and I have been there quite a lot. I love historical things in general. There is a large museum in New York city and I went there once. I really enjoyed it, but I went to New York for a weekend with my aunts and cousins and no-one really wanted to go back except me.

I am very interested in historical issues, buildings and sites too. This stems from my family history research. Oddly enough, my daughter loves history, and particularly Ancient History.

I have never done family research. My cousin has done one. I don't really find my history all that interesting.

i prefer to go to boston..our local galleries suck.seriously. their selection is bad, mostly no name abstract artists. i actually got to visit the isabella stewart gardner museum in mass before it got robbed-they had some beautiful medieval tapestries.not sure if they were among the thefts..i hope not.

A pity youir local galleries are no good. Some local communities pride themselves on having a fine gallery to show off local talent. My daughter would be most fascinated with medieval tapestries. She just loves everything medieval.

It's not local per se, since it's about an hour away, but we love heading to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles when we can get out there. It's always been a fun place, a mixture of art and history. And since you only have to pay for parking, it's a nice deal to be able to head over there for the cost of one car with a group of people. There are so many pieces I don't even know where to begin. There are a few buildings, wings or whatever you want to refer to them as, and we've easily gotten lost in the building for an entire day. There is no one speciality for the Getty; there's early work, later works like Gothic and Impressionism, and also a lot of modern works. Add to that rotating galleries and exhibits that come in for a limited time and you got a lot to check out.

I laughed when I read the bit about getting lost. When we left the museum, one of the desk workers told us that lots of people get lost and families separated at our art gallery. Ours is free to enter too, but our city parking is very expensive, thats why I took the bus. Come to think of it, I have heard of the Getty Museum, so it must be famous. Our art gallery has visiting exhibits. I didnt mention in my discussion that they display the paintings amonst an arry of very old furntiure and sculptues. In one gallery, there was a circle of 15 ceramic ducks set up on the floor, right in the middle of the room.

There is a very small gallery here that has themes from time to time. Local and folk artistry mostly. I do visit it from time to time but htere is one in a city kind of close that I really want to visit. I just never have the time to go. Now that you have mentioned it, I may try to go in the next couple of weeks. I love art.

Sometimes local art is the most rewarding to view.

Every now and again I visit our city art Gallery in the city. But not so much the local one. I just kind of find it a little intimidating. Odd I know. Considering I'm training to be a designer, and checking out art is a key part of research etc. But yea, I do like New Zealand art. We always do lots of beachy scenes and stuff, and it just feels distinctly NZ. Love it.

I can imagine viewing art gallaries would help with being a designer. I agree that NZ has some beautuful scenes that must be magnificient in a painting.
