I hear the word , "hypocrite" alot. Especially in church circles. Things like, "I don't go to church because it's filled with nothing but hypocrites". I'm wondering what all of you think about this... For you personally what defines a hypocrite? I think it is human nature to be judgemental (to a certain degree). We steriotype on race, religion, tatoos, upbringing, etc... When do you think hypocracy crosses the judgement line?

Hypocrite is simply doing something that directly contradicts what you claim to believe. "I don't believe in watching movies", and then someone catches you renting a DVD of Star Wars. That's a hypocrite. Judgmental, is when you take something not inherently wrong by God's standards, and condemning someone for it. Women waring slacks is wrong. Women must ware dresses. Where is that in the Bible? Nowhere. So that is judgmental. Being judgmental is not inherently hypocritical. If your church believes tattoos and piercings are evil, then as long as you don't have tattoos and piercings, you are being consistent. Still judgmental, but not hypocritical. Now if you say all movies are bad, and condemn someone for going to a theater, and then rent a DVD yourself, now you are both a hypocrite and judgmental.

Hypocrite is the one who advices others but when the same situation comes to his own life he/she will not follow. An double standard people. One side they live with us like true friends and other side they also dig a graveyard for us. As I already mentioned an Double Standard, two faced persons

In General, a hypocrite is one saying one thing and doing something opposite to it. Please Read the words of God and Prophet Mohammad below: The Prophet said, "The signs of a hypocrite are four: 1. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. 2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise). 3. If you trust him, he proves to be dishonest. (If you keep something as a trust with him, he will not return it.) 4. Whenever he argue, he behaves in evil and insulting manner. Among the people there are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day", when they are not believers. They think they deceive Allah and those who believe. They deceive no one but themselves but they are not aware of it. There is a sickness in their hearts and Allah has increased their sickness. They will have a painful punishment on account of their denial. (Quran al-Baqara, 2:8-10) When you see them, their outward form appeals to you, and if they speak you listen to what they say. But they are like propped-up planks of wood. They imagine every cry to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them! How they are perverted! (Quran : al-Munafiqun 63: 4) The hypocrites are in the lowest level of the hell Fire. You will not find any one to help them. (Quran an-Nisa’ 2:145) The hypocrites, men and women, with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close-fisted with their hands. They have forgotten Allah so He has forgotten them. Verily the hypocrites are rebellious and perverse (Quran : At-Tawbah 9:67) The Hypocrites - they think they are over-reaching God, but He will over-reach them: When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold God in remembrance; (Quran, 4:142) Peace.

A hypocrite to me means someone who tells people one thing, but does the opposite. An example would be someone who says 'I think that we should all be doing our bit to save the planet', but in fact has every light in their house on and uses a car with a huge engine.

People who condemn everything but turn around and do what they are condemning themselves. Most likely for some paper thin reason, if they give a reason at all. Those people annoy me a lot. They just don't exist in church circles unfortunately either. They are all over the place. Its a word that I seen associated with politicians quite often and for good reason.

Hypocrite is quite simple, you say one thing and do the opposite. I think it gets aimed at religious folks quite often because religion is about loving and caring for your fellow man, and yet many of the more vocal people condemning others blindly are religious extremists. I draw the line of hypocrisy pretty much right from the start. If you have a belief, stick by it. Don't pretend to be something you're not. And please don't say we need to love everyone and then backpedal and talk about how you and your religion (or God) hates certain people for some reason. It can't be both.

well it means somebody that says one thing and acts in a way that contradicts this. for example somebody that says they believe in compassion and are callous, if not cruel. it is almost impossible not to be judgemental to some degree, i suppose when you say 'i do not judge' and then erm 'judge' you are a hypocrite. better to say 'i try not to judge' and then 'try not to judge'.
