for me it has to be Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners, that's the best anime I've watched after higurashi hands down, its my kind of thing: drama, awesome characters, nice animation, dealings with mature themes, blood and gore and plenty of psychological differences and philosophical views...the ending it had was one of the most satisfying and just plain awesome ones I've ever seen...its also got an awesome name when translated...Boundary of Emptiness: The Garden of Sinners how cool is that?
so what's yours and why do you think that?

I'll have to second the FMA Brotherhood anime. The first anime was great but this one is a lot better since it follows the manga more closely. Everything has the same feel but better. I was really worried because I liked the first anime so my expectations were kind of high. I'm really glad that I haven't been disappointed so far.
It's too early to tell right now since I've only seen two episodes but Durarara! is turning out great too. Of course, I did expected the same chaotic action and comedy that Baccano! had this one does seem to have it. This is the only current anime that I'm following at the moment.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
It is a mecha story. It has a humor which makes you laughing at the end.
But I don't think that you would like the ending.
The story started with Simon who lives underground then tries to live above ground.
After that they go to rescue his lover and the battle took place in space.
It's all about spirals and anti-spirals.

For me it's Shaman King. It may look corny but Hao Asakura rocks! ^.^

I've been watching Baccano! which is a really good deep interlocked story set in America in the 1930s. There seem to be people who are unable to die and their lives seem to be connecting for some odd reason. I'm only a few episodes in and the inability to die is quickly established in the first episode so not really spoiling anything. It's lots of fun, and is even currently free to watch on Hulu!
