Making extra money for school

Isn't it always safe to have extra money for just in case purposes when going away for college? There are some people that still call home for money, but I think if you make that extra money before you go to school and (if you have time) during school then you wouldn't have to depend on anyone because you'd be covered. What are the opinions on that? Did/Do you mooch off of your parents? Did/Do you make extra money for school?

yes i work a little bit on the interent to get money for some of my expenses.
