Should plastic bags be banned completely?

plastic bags - The picture shows the use of these dangerous plastic bags. Look at these people who are carrying these bags with ease. But many of them do not know that this is going to create a huge problem in near future.

With increase in demand of the people over the years the plastic bags have also grown in number. Everyone knows the demerits of these plastic bags but no one ready to take step against it. It creates ecological imbalance. If it is not banned in the near future there will be a huge scarcity of fertile land. Now its your turn to say that should it be banned or not?

Maybe not to completely ban it. I guess there should be incentives for businesses who would adopt the technology of the biodegradable plastic bags that some malls/supermarkets already use now. Then also incentives for those who will provide alternative means of packaging to their customers. They should probably also put a price tag (no matter how small) on customers who don't bring their own bags (plastic or other reusable bags like canvas) when they shop. Just my two cents.

Yeah, this is a nice way to force people to carry their own carry bags when they are out for shopping. No one will be willing to pay for something which was available for free until now. In other cases, plastics have to be used in order to carry the garbage. But they should be recycled.

Sadly, I don't see much effort from governments around this issue. But malls and supermakets are starting to respond. In another city/province here in the Philippines, they did pass a local ordinance that tells stores to use alternative packaging, even for market vendors. When I was there (I actually forgot which of the towns I visited it was), even a small grocery store had paperbags instead. Then the market vendors were selling net bags that their buyers could use. It's not really eradicating the use of plastic bags that's needed, but minimizing it. Myself, I carry a reusable shopping bag with me. I fill it up with my purchases and refuse the plastic bags. But when it is full or if I can't mix something with the rest of the merchandise, I accept the plastic or paper bag that the store owners. At least, I didn't use as much plastic as I would have without the bag...

Hi sanjeevsingh, i think that plastic bags should be banned and the manufacturing be put under strict government control. What you say is true and the uncontrolled use has put a lot of stress on the ecological balance of nature. I've seen lots of drains clogged with plastic bags and non-biodegradable products. It is time that the people become aware of this perils and stop the use of non-biodegradable products.

I agree that plastic bags have created lots of problems in our environment. But government should also be active and come up with an alternative for plastic bags, otherwise where else will we carry our things ? We can use cloth bags but not many people spend money on buying them. They should be available in cheaper rate and good quality which will be long lasting. My mother keeps vegetables in plastic bags and stores them in fridge. Without them we cant use cloth bags, so we need to have some plastics. We can't ban it completely.

Plastic bags are affecting our environment to a great extent. If you remember the havoc which took place in mumbai on 26th July due to flood and excess rain,it was only due to drain blockage and nothing else other than plastics were responsible. They go and block the drains which obstructs the water flow and as a result the rain water got accumulated and flooded whole mumbai. Sadly, government still has not taken necessary action till today that is 4 years after the incident took place. Plastics are still being used by people and the problem still persists. Of course, only banning the plastic will not help as plastics are must for carrying liquids which can't be held by paper or cloth bag. So some kind of recycling of plastics must be implemented as soon as possible to curb this major issue which is being faced by people from all over the world and not just mumbai!! Have a nice plastic free Life! LOL

I agree that they are very bad for the environment, though I don't think they deserve an outright ban (or at least, just yet). Where I live, many supermarkets have implemented a system whereby they charge extra per plastic bag customers use, thus encouraging them to buy the re-usable bags. This in my opinion is a very good idea

Not only that, plastic bags thrown into the waters can clog the water pipes that causes floods in low-lying area, plastic bags burned can contribute to the continuous damage in our ozone layer, thereby results in the global warming. I'm glad that as of today, there are growing number of business establishments in our country who are supporting our government's call for eliminating these plastic bags. They are now using paper bags for dry goods. A supermarket has an MOB day, meaning Bring your Own Bag when buying goods in their supermarket. I hope that we will all know the disadvantages of these plastic bags, if we can not eliminate the use of these plastic bags, at least, let's us join hands of minimizing the use of these bags. Anyway, it is us who will benefit on this.

No, not completely. If plastic bags are banned completely, it would be very inconvient in daily life. Of course, we also need to protect our planet, and the reduction of the use of plastic bags is necessary with no doubt. We should use degradable plastic bags and pay for them. And maybe we should try to find some new materials to replace plastic bags. A new balance is what we need. If we always try to solve problems in such a simple way as banning something completely, we will have to face to the new problems soon.

Many countries brought out a ban on plastic in their countries and within years they are able to bring the change,Usage of paper bags and cloth bags have increased.Similarly let us try to do that. Our governments should also ban plastic and should encourage us to use paper bags and cloth bags

It is still a long way to go to ban the plastic bags completely. Most super market in China won't provide free plastic bags for their customers any more. They will ask them to buy it if the customers want to use it.This measure will encourage consumers to take their own green shopping bags in some degrees. However, not every one like to carry green bags themselves. They will say it is not convinient. It would be better if we can provide some new green bags that is as cheap as plastic bags in the market. That is, if we can have an economic substitution that can be recycled the plasic bags will not be popular any more.

hello sanjeevsingh!! i think plastic bags should be banned. our planet is becoming a world of junk, so we must act on it as soon as possible. besides, a lot of people are doing efforts to reverse the effects of greenhouse effect, so we must also participate by omitting plastic bags by ourselves. let's save mother earth!!!

I do not think that plastic bags should be banned at all. People should just be more responsible and dispose of them properly or reuse them. And if you are going to complain about plastic, then what will we use to throw out the trash. My trash bags are definitely plastic. I reuse all my plastic bags from the grocery store. I have about three bags full of other plastic bags. I use them for trash bags in my bathroom, my boyfriend uses them to take his lunch to work, I use them to take my notebook and stuff places with me. I love them. Also, at all the grocery stores where I live, they have plastic bag recycle boxes so that they will be disposed of properly. I think if a person is responsible they would reuse or recycle. Also, paper bags are made of trees so if every one switched to paper we would just be cutting down more trees and I think that would have an even bigger impact on the planet. I do not think that plastic bags should be banned at all.

Rather than punish or collect heavy fines or even jail shopkeepers and /or people carrying them on the road, they should first sincerely ban the thin plastic bags of certain microns at the manufacturer end itself- I am saying 'sincerely' because the more laws you have the more chances for corruption start - and that is why life goes on merrily as before.

Plastic bags have already been banned in my area by the authorities. they have also fined some citizens for still using it. It definitely creates ecological imbalance. The question is shud we wait for someone to say that it is banned. or shud we ourselves stop using them. I mean if we understand the importance lets start and do it rightaway. :)

I know that their bad for the nature but their simply too useful. How about instead of banning them... well, people could limit the amount of bags made or used. It also would help a lot if people wouldn't throw them away unless their broken.

For the good of the environment, yes, I think plastic bags should be totally banned but doing that in one instant is impossible. So let's take it slow. Let us start by minimizing its use by reusing, recycling, and reducing. This would be a good start. But we should get started now.

I don't think so because we need plastic bags or we would not be able to live with out them. Well we can live without them it's just that to many people would get upset because they need plastic bags to help them in their daily lives.

infact plastic bags should and must be banned as it creates imbalance in the existing eco system. this apart one can use either jute or cotton as a manufacturing product for making bags as this not only helps building up ecological balance but also helps in providing employment which eradicates unemployment problem to some extentin a country like India.

I think that they should be banned and replaced with biodegradable materials.
