Is internet server necessary?

I am a college student and using my laptop to have internet access. But now we a group of six have decided to have a wireless connection instead wired LAN for our six laptops. For this we have purchased a wireless router for this. Now we are unable to make connection for these. Please tell me that is it necessary to have a server in this case? If yes, how will it be possible?
