Do you think smoking should not be allowed in public places?

Its a fact that the passive smoker has grater hazards of getting tobacco related diseases than the smoker himself. If the smoker has 5 % chances of dying then the passive smoker has 40 to 50 %. What wrong has the person standing beside him done? I think it is unfair to smoke in the public and harm someone like that. In private it is fine. What are your views on this?

I am a smoker and yes, i know, it is unhealthy. But i normally do not smoke in public as it doesn,t look very good. But so is drinking. No matter what laws they think of, they only encourage a lot of smokers to do whatever they please. I agree, if you do not smoke, i will not smoke near you. I only smoke at home or at work. But there i do it outside, where i do not bother anybody. It is bad manners to smoke near people, who doesn,t smoke themselves.

You have a point there. Generally smoking is allowed on the streets, but drinking is not. Where is the logic that supports this? I think it's just a matter of how public image is changing and bringing laws and regulations with it.

I think it is right decision to prohibit smoking in public places. In our country there is such rule, so you can't smoke on the street or in a restaurant or pub or elsewhere, if you have some people near you. I think such law has a great positive effect on peoples health.

I am a sufferer of asthma. So from my point of view smoke free is the way to go. I'd keep it in private. I have a friend who smoke outside in his yard of his own home. His reasoning is he doesn't want his home to smell of smoke or have ti repaint because of the tar. I think he'd stop smoking..but he hasn't.

I think the non-smoker as well as the smokers should have rights. I don't think smokers should be able to smoke in the most public buildings . The thing that bothers me is when someone opens up a new bussiness and they are told it has to be non smoking.Everyone should have the right to go in or to stay away without the government always telling us what we have to do.

In my city smoking is banned at almost all public places such as shopping centres, cinemas, restaurants, train stations, commercial buildings by the government as a move to protect public health from second hand smoke. Fine is imposed on the smokers as well as the operators of businesses if they are found breaking the law. Therefore the number of places in public that one can smoke is very limited. But I think it also send a message to smokers that the best way forward is to quit smoking, as smoking is a "hobby" that is too difficult to maintain on a practical level.

I am a smoker and I respect nonsmokers and their choice, but do we get the same respect as smokers? No we don't they have made it to where it is almost impossible to smoke anywhere but your own home. That is fine if people don't want to be subjected to the smoke but I think businesses such as restaurants should build a partition for the smokers.

If smokers want to smoke, then I have absolutely no problem with that because why should I dictate what they can and cannot do with their own body? However, if they do decide to smoke, then I think they should have the decency to do it somewhere away from people who have chosen not to smoke, or at least ask for their permission first.

I am a smoker and I think it should not be allowed in public places. I know that I'm killing myself slowly but I'm responsible enough not to let others die because of passive smoking. I do hate other smokers smoking in public places. And if I meet one, I would ask him/her courteously to walk away from other people.

Of course you right dude, smoking should not be not allowed in public places, the person who want to smoke that is the person want to die,do privately, they should not do in public, how can they smoke in public, its affecting the non smokers also,so, the smoking should not be allowed in public places ,if they do the government should take the severe action against the smokers, that is good for public and also for the non-smokers ,so,this is my view about this topic ,and have a nice day.

It's really good if the government will stop those smokers to smoke in public areas. First, they can harm many people, cause I'm health conscious as well...

Hi Unnat,
Yes passive smoking is dangerous than active smoking. That is the reason for banning the same in public places. But people are still enjoying the smoking habit in public place as there is nobody to take care of the Law. People who are addicted to smoking can’t be avoiding the same when they feel the urge to smoke and they will smoke even if they are in public place. Simply blaming the smokers won’t help and they should realize the problem by themselves.

Depends on what kind of places your talking about. Bars and discos or anything like that.. yes. The street? No.. not really. The streets are big enough to avoid the smoke. But I wouldn't mind seeing special rooms or something like that at public places where the people can smoke.. just so that the people who don't smoke (like me) don't have to breath in that awful smoke..

Hi Takashy, I a talking about the public place and commercial buildings, etc. I think they can easily have a small smoking room for the convinience of all! In discos and pubs it is fine if they all smoke because without that it will not be a happening place! Thank you for your response.

of course smoking must not be allowed to be done in the public.and i believe that kind of rule does exist also.in my country it does.if anybody was caught for smoking in the public they would be charged with high enough fine.and honestly telling the cops in our country are trying their maximum to get money from all sort of ways

hi,it would not be a good thing to allow in the public places to smoke.it is very hard to take that smoke all over.Might be it is interesting to the smoker but it is very hard for the person stading side or nearby.

I'm a non smoker and hate hate hate the smell of smoke. But I don't think smoking should be illegal in all public places. I really think that bars should have the option to have smoking or not. This would benefit both the ones that do and do not take the option. Those who allow smokers can get the smoking crowd, and those who don't can have the crowd that doesn't smoke. I think it would make sense on basic capitalism logic if nothing else.
Over the many years I went to concerts and bars before my state banned smoking I was always able to either avoid smokers and their smoke or they would politely step away if I asked them to. So I never really saw the issue, and still don't honestly.
