Are people as small minded as they appear to be

I have been thinking recently about how "precious" people can be about things. They won't back down on opinions. They hold the morale high ground irrespective of whether they are right or wrong. They delight in being "Little Miss/Mr Perfect". The sort that tell tales with little evidence and even make the people that they are reporting to wish that they would go and curl back under the rock from which they emerged. I am sure that no one here is like that. Have you ever known somebody that always just has to be in the right?

I know a person like that intimately--me! I fight it every day, thinking I know the answer to the world's problems, judging peoples' behavior and morals. I've found that when I get on my high horse and start judging people, something happens to show me I'm not the paragon of virtue that I make myself out to be. So I try to take the high ground as much as I can. I've gotten better in the past few years but it's still a character flaw I hope to overcome.

I can't think of anyone of my acquaintances who are that extreme. I do know a couple of people who hate to be wrong, but will admit it when they are.

I've known a lot of people who always have to be right. I don't talk to them much because they annoy me.

This is true, lol. I think everyone likes to be right, but we should all at least listen to what everyone has to say.

I think the truth is that many people have already formed opinions on everything. even if they have never been throu experience like that , they still "know" what it is like, how they would react. which is far from the thruth... it's easy to judge someone when you have never been throu something like that. i have found myslef the same in such situations, but i try to remind me that I dont know how i would react under these circumstances.
otherwise, rule 1 rock :) I am always right as well :)

Unfortunately I know quite a lot of people like that. It's not quite so bad if, a) I didn't know that I was right or b) if there was actually a chance, the tiniest reason why the other person might possibly be right.
Of course, I am right all the time, no matter what because I said so and, as a mother, "because I said so" is a perfectly reasonable and rational reason for KNOWING that you're right!
But seriously, only today was I attempting a conversation with a small minded chauvinist who, despite never having been in a particular situation, seemed to think he knew all about it. I hate that, especially when I have been in a situation and I do know what happens because it's what happened and then you have someone saying that something completely different happens as though they would know and they argue and argue even when they've been proven wrong. I know lots of people like that and it is so frustrating.

Hi p1ke,
Yep I know a couple of people who as they say are always 'right' even when you know they are wrong..it is like butting your head against a brick wall telling them they are wrong unless you can prove it to them, and it is also very frustrating
Hugs LoLo

Oh yes I have known people like that, in fact I have known lots of people like that. I bet all of us know or have known someone like that! They are the sorts of people that my mum would say " she would never tire of smacking!" But really those sorts of people are really irritating!

hi pike I had an aunt once just like that, she lived in Nebraska, here in the US. Her husband was a minister but a really nice guy but she was the pitts. We went to visit them and as it was summer, and watermelons were really ripe we b rought them a big melon as a sort of hostess gift. she opened it, sniffed, said,'Oh its okay but ours is so much better." My dad looked so hurt, Uncle Walter was his brother, so Aunt Lulu was his sister in law. she had that way of putting you down and she of course was always right and you were always wrong. what a person to be a minister's wife.. Pikey I do hope I am not like that as I try not to be, Of course you are always right but thats cause you are Pikey. he he he.

I think we all run into these types of people. When encountering one, I always wonder how they can think that they are so correct with whatever viewpoint they are expounding...when I know that I'm right?
Unfortunately there aren't enough political offices for them to fill. Maybe some should be developed for them, to get thm out of our hair. Preferably on another planet....

People just seem naturally inclined to say they are right even when they have been proven wrong. After being proven wrong they will usually blame circumstances or say they had insufficient tools or whatever. The best thing to do about these people is to try and just learn to deal with them.

I think we all know of such people..I am so far from perfect and I know this well. I do know of someone who won't back down on their opinions..they are like a starving dog with a meat bone. And they find nothing wrong in what they are doing sometimes but they do bully people along to do as they want and if they don't then they get tiffed off and throw a tantrum. Me, I throw tantrum too on occasion..but I don't like to be bullied or see others bullied.

Hi, P1kef1sh!
There are always going to be those who have made up their minds and refuse to be swayed by the facts in any way. Why they think their way is the only way, I can't imagine. I find them rather pitiful, frankly!

I worked under the Administrator of the housing department of an amusement park. The year before, we had had prolems with bedbugs. So one day I spotted a bug (not a bedbug and told her about it.) I felt she should place a warning since there was a lot of hankie pankie in the apartments. It wasn't long before we were talking about bedbugs and she (a high school graduate) was schooling me (a college graduate) about bedbugs.
Now before you think I'm taking the high road over high school grads, many of whom I respect as being highly intelligent without needing a college degree; this lady lectured me as if I were a kid. She took out her Internet material and showed me that bedbugs cannot be spread by people unless the bedbugs are in suitcases or something. I "debated" with her that bugs hitch a ride on us in other ways such as our clothes. She gave me the Internet material and presto, I found the section where it said the critters attach themselves to clothes. "They don't like to move," she responded, "they jump off when you move." Since she was the big boss, I let the matter rest.
Weeks later under this administrator's supervision, one of our workers raised the mattress over his head and carried it out of a bedbug infested room. About a half hour later he walked several yards to another building to talk to a coworker. While jumping up and down in glee about something he'd heard, the little buggers started falling out of his hair. He was sent to shower, but wore the same clothes back to work. When he got back to his apartment after work, within a week's time, the surrounding rooms on his floor were invaded by bedbugs. Postcript: From that point, other buildings started getting the pests. This invasion went into the next year with the pest control guy making weekly runs to the apartments.

I agree that this supervisor didn't do her homework and the result was what you described. As a supervisor I would expect her to be experienced in dealing with those pests. She might equally have been a college graduate of course. I have met some very stupid graduates in my time.
