Have you noticed that even dog/cat food has gone up?!

My dogs love the generic Kroger biscuits, which is good because they used to be quite cheap. $1.49 a box last year. Now a box is $2.79 and the more economical bag is $5.89. I remember when they were $1 a box on sale last year! Cat food has gotten quite costly, too. The Kroger on sale is $2.50 while Friskies is around $4 a 3.5 pound bag! Food is really going up in price and now they're attacking our pet food costs, too. How are prices in your area? Have you switched to cheaper pet food, cut out treats or begun making your own?

Hi Dragon54u Yes I have noticed that pet food is getting more expensive. I have a cat and I feed him Science Diet which is a more expensive type of cat food its like 13.95 for a 10lb bag but thats all he eats thats what we've been feeding him since we got him almost 3 years ago He's worth it thoughhe brings a lot of joy and love to our family plus he is in very good health according to the vet, I don't have a dog cats are easier to take care of in my opinion but I do like dogs I used to own several dogs throughout the years since childhood. I haven't switched to a cheaper brand of cat food because he won't really eat anything else but thats ok because the Science Diet is really good for his coat and he hasn't coughed up one hair ball since we've had him

Science Diet is great food and you're probably saving yourself a lot of vet bills by feeding him healthy food. So it's really not that expensive when you think about it. I'm allergic to cats, unfortunately--I love them! I have two dogs. I feed the stray cats in the neighborhood, that's as close as I can come to having a cat.

Coco is a very lucky girl! I'm very upset with the price of food and then they hit us in the heart with increases in pet needs. I'm going to begin making biscuits for them, they love it when I do that but I don't like the mixing and stuff and running to the oven. I have to sit down a couple times during the mixing process and I get very irritated with myself.

I buy in bulk, for three cats, but I often buy treats at a "scratch and dent" store. The big bags of food have a) gotten smaller and b) gotten more expensive. I do not buy the cheapest cat food at Sam's cause the cat health in my old guy seems to suffer. I am sure it has more ash. I tend to buy the big bag of cat Friskies. I think I may look into making pet treats to sell at the Farmer's Market this year. Yes, I read in the paper that the "food index" is going down, but I just do not see it. The only thing that is cheaper is bananas that I can tell.

I know I said bulk, but I meant the large bags. My cats would not eat the bulk stuff from the feed store. I had them get sick from the food at the scratch and dent, and I found myself wondering if something spilled on it. Somewhere I have a cookbook for pets, but I can look at that site as well, thanks.

Yeah, and we can hardly survive on bananas! The trouble with the bulk food is that it's usually cheaply made. My dogs are almost 9 and 10 now and I'm feeding them senior food. There are some yummy sounding recipes for dog biscuits on stretcher.com if you don't have one already. I just copied one down, myself.

When we went well over 20 cats we switched from Science Diet and Purina One, I hate to go to any lower grade food. Good food means healthy cats means fewer vet visits.

$120 to $140 a month, depending if we need 6 or 7 bags of food

I'm finding that the dog food is rising at a MUCH faster rate than the cat food. With 2 cats & 2 dogs, I buy my fair share of both. I buy Meow Mix Hairball Remedy in the 7 pound bag & it costs me $6.88 per bag. It has been at that price for over a year now. However, my dog food has gone up just every few months. I buy Alpo Come & Get It that now costs $8.00 per 15 pound bag. About a year ago it was $6.25. I also buy a dollar store generic which I mix with the Alpo. The generic has gone from $3.99 to $6.75 per 20 pound bag within the last year. I still buy some canned food for both my cats & dogs, but am finding that I'm feeding more & more dry food to both. I no longer buy dog biscuits as they have gotten too high for my liking. I've also stopped buying people cookies just for the same reason. Since my babies are my children, like a good Mommy, I'll cut back on my luxuries in order to take care of my babies!!!

One way I stretch my dog food dollars is to save all bones and boil them for broth to pour over the dog food. When I buy chicken I save drippings and bones for the same purpose. After I get the broth I put it in the fridge overnight and skim off the fat, leaving just the flavor. Some I use for soup but most goes to make the dog food tastier. Every bit of fat (flavor!), gristle and tiny bits of leftovers also go in the broth. Luckily, my dogs like all kinds of fruit and vegetables and when those are on sale I buy them and mix them with the food, as well.

I haven't seen a huge price increase in pet food around here. I've seen it go up but in my area it's only seemed to go up just a few cents not several dollars or more. I guess I'm a little lucky as well, I tend to shop for items in several different stories in different towns and I've been able to compare where I can get the cheapest pet food. I've found that it's better for me to shop where I live now before I take a trip to visit home for pets because the food is much, much cheaper.

I don't travel around much since I lost my job a year ago but it's pretty much the same whether in my town or my dad's town 30 miles away. Cookie almost caught her own dinner a few minutes ago when our squirrel jumped for the garage and missed! Maybe I should let her hunt for us.

Priceless dog food - Why? not make Ur pets food
I raise my hand to this discussion. Yes I have noticed the prices of dog and cat food. Especially the kind that have the main ingredients that is needed for your pets. It is seems like the don't have coupons for them anymore either. I'm really thinking about doing so research on how to make my dog food I think I might come out better in the price range, not to mention my dogs just might like it better then store brought dog food.

There are several recipes over at stretcher dot com. Just put "homemade dog food" into their site's search engine and you'll find several recipes that are thrifty and good for your pets! I'm thinking the same thing, myself. Most commercial dog food has "animal digest" as an ingredient--this is, for the most part, ground up humane society victims and not something I want my dog to ingest! The more expensive foods like Iams and Authority don't have it but they are out of my price range.

Hi dragon. I noticed this some months ago when it comes to the brand I feed my dogs. What's weird though is that it has actually gone done a few dollars since then. But with the way things are going, I won't be surprised if it goes back up again soon. I haven't bothered to switch to cheaper food, but if things don't improve I may just have to. And that's not just for dog food either! Happy mylotting!

I've cut back to cheaper brands of everything, both human and dog and cat food. This is really ridiculous. As I mentioned to another person, the less we buy the more the prices go up to make up for the loss of volume. Then we buy even less and the prices rise more. It's a vicious cycle.

Yes I have. I feed my group all natural formulas and they tend to be a bit higher anyway. I've started making my own dog food (a raw mixture) but the cats being cats want their same food, so I bite the bullet and pay the higher price. What we won't do for our animals huh?

I haven´t really noticed the price of our pet food increasing, but the cheap supermarket own brand cat food I used to use hasn´t been on the shelf for ages so I´ve been forced to buy their slightly more expensive version. Just a couple of days ago though I decided to start buying 20kg bags from my seed merchant instead though. I already use him for feed for the other animals and he´ll deliver to me, so although it´s slightly more expensive I don´t have to worry about driving miles to the supermarket to pick it up and I shouldn´t run out with such huge bags. My butcher gives me bones and scraps for the dogs when I pop in at the right moment, which is a big help the once or twice a week that I have them.

There you are! I was just wondering about you a couple days ago since I hadn't seen you around for quite awhile--I'm glad you're here and hope you're doing well! I read yesterday that if you get a big beef bone and boil it for a few minutes, it will make it hardened and it won't splinter. Then you can use the stock for soup or recipes. The feed store here is as expensive or more so than the Walmart or grocery store so they are no help to me! And they don't give away bones here, they package them up and SELL them for soup bones!

Hey there dragon. Yes, I noticed that both dog and cat food went up in my area when gas prices were through the roof and they haven't come down at all. I did change the food I bought because of this. I used to buy Pedigree canned food for the dogs and a name brand dry food but now I buy generic from the Dollar Store. They like it just as much...but the cat is another story. She wasn't happy with the generic dry cat food and is still in a bad mood.

The stray cats around here aren't picky, for which I'm grateful! My dogs are a different matter. I buy Alpo canned food to mix with their dry food. When packaged gravy mixes are on sale I also buy those to put over the food instead of the canned. Trouble is, when prices go up they usually stay there.

everything is going up here in china especially the food and vegetables. the report says that the consumption rate is higher by a lot than last year. but i don't pet anything so i don't know the price of the pet food, i think petting is another consumption .

Cat food has gone up a bit. But you know how they are tricking people with the Special Kitty (WM's) I buy? It's now a 18lb bag & it used to be a 20lb bag & it has gone up nearly $2 too. The cat litter yeah.... the cheap stuff I buy used to be under $2 a 25lb bag, now it's nearing $3 & that's for the cheap stuff. My cats don't get too many treats unless I find them on clearance & the kids like to give more than a couple, they like to do handfulls We haven't done wet food in a while. The brand they liked the store stopped carrying. And frankly all the other brands they just lick the gravey off it and leave the rest. So we don't buy any.

I buy gravy mixes on sale when they're about $.25 a packet or less. They make 2 cups of gravy for my dogs and it lasts all week! That's a treat they like and it's cheap and low calorie/fat.

It seems that we've all cut back as much as we can, doesn't it? I don't know where else I could cut except make my own biscuits--which the dogs both love. Elderly cats have special nutritional needs so I doubt bulk cat food would be a help to you. I don't know how it can get too much worse but unfortunately I think it will. Best to reset our budgets now before things get too expensive to afford, and find some alternatives if possible.

I have noticed that everything is going up and its not just a few cents. In some cases its more then 1.00 dollar. Its ridiulous with the way things are right now economically. How are people suppose to feed themselves and their pets. After this bag of treats I will be cutting them out mainly because he needs to lose weight but also the prices are crazy. I may have to switch to cheaper dog food but it has to be done gradually.

After this bag of biscuits I will probably make my own. They love my recipe, I put veggies in the blender then add flour, broth, egg whites and miscellaneous stuff that they love. It's still only about 10 calories per biscuit. The problem with cheap dog food is that it usually contains "animal digest" which is ground up animals--usually, I hear, the casualties of animal shelters. The only exception is Kroger's Dog Gone Deli kibbles and bits knock off.

The trouble is, the more tightly we hang onto our money the more prices will increase because the companies aren't making enough money or so they think. It's a vicious cycle. Luckily, my dogs love it when I cook frozen vegetables for them and when they are on sale I stock up to supplement their dog food.

Dog food prices are extremely high here as well. I used to have two large dogs and had to downsize to only one because of rising pet care and food costs. My dog has to settle for the cheap Old Yeller brand of dog food which sells for around $13 for a 50lb bag. Even the Ol'Roy brand from Wal Mart is over $26 for a 50lb bag. We do buy the Ol Roy biscuits though. A large brand runs around $5.

Welcome to myLot! I won't buy Ol' Roy as I heard it's made in China and I'm afraid of it. I had my dogs on Purina One and they liked it but unfortunately they don't seem to make senior dog food so I switched to Iams because I had a coupon. They don't like it much so after this bag it's back to Kroger's Dog Gone Deli, which is much cheaper, they like it but it's not for senior dogs. And it doesn't have "animal digest" as an ingredient!
