Automatic Litter Boxes - Need Advice please!!

It's time to replace the litter box and my hubby suggested we consider a Litter Maid since it's automated and would simplify things. We already use the self clumping Scoopable kind so that wouldn't change. I don't know much about them and wonder if my fellow Cat Loving mylotters could share their opinions. Our girls are indoor only cats and share 1 large litter box very nicely. But it's time to get a new one and we could just get the same type or maybe you have a favorite one that we should check out??

I have heard the self cleaning litter boxes can be quite a bit more messy than the normal ones when it is time to clean them. They do eventually have to be cleaned. I used to like the ones with the lid over top of them.

Well, hubby has decided he really wants to try one. I have concerns about the noise and the motor with animals interacting with it. I am sure it will not be effortless to take care of it, but it would potentially save some effort and time on my hubby's behalf since he's the one who does pooper scooper duty for all pets. Lucky him! We have the one with the lid now and I would be fine with just getting the same one but he really wants to try the other. Walmart has it on sale and we can return it if it doesn't work out well. Thanks for sharing! Hope your weekend is going well! Take care!

I have a Litter Maid and love it. The Litter Maid works both on batteries and electricity. The one thing that I do is rather than toss the litter and the container I would dump the litter and clean out the container and reuse it for quite awhile. It didn't bother the cats when I switched, in fact they liked it too. Besides the box always being clean, they got a kick out of their poopies disappearing into somewhere in the "great beyond". They would hear the maid start working and they would race to check out what was going on with the maid. I also seemed to use less litter than with the regular self scoop box. It also was much less odorous during the summer. The only thing I would say against it would be that if you go only with the electric option you would need to clean it during power failures. Otherwise it is such a nice piece of equipment. I wouldn't be without it. Pick one up from a store that has a liberal return policy (I got mine from Wal Mart on close out so I had the time to try it out, but after the first few days I knew that they weren't going to get it back!!!) That way if you don't like it you can return it. I wouldn't go for the Cat genie though as it costs like crazy, you need a water hookup, and it has to have someplace to drain which would either be the toilet or the drain for the washer. Plus you will need to replace the "litter" eventually even though they say you won't need to. For the price of the Cat Genie (Which is well over $200) you can buy a lot of scoopable litter for the savings. The Litter Maid runs from $69 to $125 (that's the super deluxe model) so you can see the savings.

Thanks so very much for sharing!! We can get one locally on sale for $79 vs the new hooded one for $35 so hubby is pushing for it since he's the main scooper. I make him do it every day as it's nasty otherwise for us and the kitties. I kinda up in the air about it since one of mylotters made the comment that her cats messed with it when it was scooping and we have a very curious dog. I don't know if she'd try to play with it or not. We could surely train her not to as she's very well trained over all. But that raises the issue not so much of the machine being hurt but one of my beloved animals. Since I haven't seen one in action, can you tell me if they designed it so that if the cat or animal tries to get in while it's working, it would stop? I would think that they would have put some kind of safety feature in place. Please let me know your thoughts on that aspect!! Take care!

The litter maid has sensors that will cause it to stop if the cats get in while it is running a clean cycle. I really haven't had any problems with the cats being curious and climbing back in the box when it starts to scoop. The dog really won't be a problem either, as if she is currently leaving the box alone she won't be curious about it after she has seen it run. Plus the rake is spaced so that no animal could get caught in it during the cleaning cycle. And, as I said, it senses if something is in the way and quits. I've even had two cats using the box at the same time and there has been no problem. Another wonderful factor is if you have a dog that (sorry if I make you queasy, but it happens) likes to go litter box diving for those little round tasty tidbits, it will keep the box immaculate. There is an on off switch so that if you don't want it running through the night or for some other reason you can turn it off. If nothing else it would be wonderful for your husband as he would only need to empty the container and clean it and put it back on the box. I also would clean the whole thing once a month, but you don't really HAVE to do it that often. I hope I've helped you out some. I would go for the litter maid. You might also check on Ebay and see if they have any available...you know the local cheapest price so you can figure it from there.

I have never heard of them so I would not go for them until I know for sure that they are safe and actually work I would stick to what you have until this Product has been around much longer and to know that it does work and that it is safe

They've been around for a few years. It's my hubby that's pushing for it since they are on sale this week at Walmart. Safety and the noise factor and key concerns of mine as well! We are going to get one and try it out. If there are any issues with it or I don't feel it's safe or the cats don't like it back it goes! Our old one is really in need of being replaced so we need to do something to make it better for all of us. We treat our pets like children so they are spoiled rotten but they spoil us right back! Thanks for sharing! If we don't like it for any reason, it'll go back and we'll get the standard one with the privacy cover since I know the cats like that one! The covered standard one is $35 not on sale, and the automatic one is $79 on sale so it's not all that much more. They've been around long enough with no legal issues that I think it's safe but I'll judge for myself. Take care!!

Cats can be very conservative, sticking to what they are used to and also some cats don't like the enclosed boxes. Those automatic boxes are quite expensive and I'd be inclined to get another open box for them as that's what they are used to rather than spend a lot of money on something that they might refuse to use.

Thanks for sharing! The one they have now has a cover and they like it just fine. Mostly it's my hubby who wants to make the change since he's the one who cleans it every day! And if it's was noisy which is a fear that I have, then they would refuse to use it and that could be alot worse...Be Well!

He'll still have to clean out the litter tray even if it was an automatic one. I've never had one, but I'd imagine that they were harder to clean as well.

I love it, love it, love it! Both my cats are girls and they had no issues with using it. The noise isn't very loud and they do watch it work but never try to interfere with it which is a very good thing. I was nervous about that part. We've had in a few months now and everyone seems to really like it. I use the disposable trays that come with it and then just empty that out and reuse it so not spending extra money buying the containers. I'd recommend trying it but make sure that you could return it in case your cat doesn't take to it. Got ours from Walmart and they have a 30 day guarantee so that made me feel alot more comfortable about getting it.

My daughter had one. It jammed after 2 months and they threw it out. Now they use the old favorite scooping litter in a regular box. The cats didn't much like the automatic one either. They had a few outside the box experiences.

Huh...wow after just 2 months it broke that is awful! And I would be very unhappy if there were some misses or new places found. We scoop daily and I scrub the box weekly so it's abit of a hassle but hubby is pushing for it since he thinks it's the way to go. And ya know how men can be,,,they love their gadgets. But will my girls? Still on the fence, Walmart has a 30 day return policy and that would at least get us some time to test it out and see if it would work well for us or not. Thanks so much for the input and advice! Take care!

My sister had gotten one of these once. Her cats did not like it. She had to go back to the regular litter box.

That's what I'm thinking. They won't like the change and the noise it makes might scare them. And no one needs to be afraid to use the bathroom...I don't know if they take them back if the cat refuses to use it or not. Excellent points raised, thanks for sharing! Be Well!

I have used the Litter Maid and loved it!!! I didn't like buying the containers over and over so I would empty them after ever use and wash them really good and reuse them because they can become a real expence. But my cats loved the clean box to the point they would just lay in the sand to relax! Silly cats! I would buy one if I was you.

Oh how funny is that! They would lay in the sand...LOL. I was thinking the same thing with the containers, that since they are plastic and it comes with a starter pack of 10 then we could do that. Did they adjust quickly or were there some nervous times? Both my cats are kinda adventurous so I think they might like it. Our local Walmart has them on sale and if it didn't work out, we'd take it back for sure. It's on sale for $79 vs a new hooded standard kind for $35 so almost double but not that bad if it's better in the long run for all the family members. Thanks so much for sharing!! Be Well!!

Like some of the others. I'd worry that they may not like the noise, and the cost may be kinda high for te box and you'd also have the upkeep costs also.

Thanks for sharing! I am concerned like you said about the noise, not sure how loud it would be and if it would startle the kitties and pooch. I'd be upset if that happened. No one should ever be afraid of the bathroom! We weighing the pros and cons since it's on sale at Walmart and we could take it back if it didn't work out well. Hubby is pushing for it since he loves his gadgets not to mention he's the one who has poop patrol daily. His choice not mine since my pregnancy,,,he just kept doing it so I never said boo....Our little one is in middle school...LOL. Take care!

Hi Tallygirl09 I have never used Litter Maid before although I have seen it at Pet Smart I haven't bought one yet . My daughter and I take turns cleaning the litter box we are still POOPER SCOOPERS as of today We also clean the box once a week with disinfectant litter box wipes and also a mild detergent I don't like cat box odors so I try to stay on top it it an auto litter box cleaner would probably cut down on some of that work but not sure if my cat Jinx would like it or not thats one of the reasons I haven't bought one yet. There not cheap either which is a second reason I haven't bought one yet. If you buy one let us know how you like it and how your cat likes it Happy Mylotting

I do the same as you, every friday, I am the one who scrubs it out to clean it up as best as one can being it's plastic. I can't stand litter box odors either which is why it's cleaned every day. Makes is so much nicer for them too. Ours has alot of scratches and it just needs to be replaced so as of now, I'm really thinking that we should just get another identical one. After all, the girls will have to adjust to the new box smell and that might be enough. They don't even like it when we rearrange the furniture so I'll review that with hubby too! Thanks for sharing! Be Well!

If you want my honest opinion I would suggest sticking with the litter box type you are used to. If you decide to go for automatic to save yourself time and engery do your research first. I too have seen them advertized, but there are things they don't tell you. Things you should consider, how is the automatic powered? batteries? eletercity? Most adds don't tell you this, so finding out is a must. Motors usually run off of something as do motion-detecting sensors. So check out the pros and cons of the unit. Make sure you know all about before shopping for one. Because you have to consider the cost of keeping it up should something go wrong.

Great comments! Thanks for sharing! I am concerned about how noisy they would be and if that would frighten the girls. That's the last thing I'd want to do. And mentioning the up keep or repairs is very helpful and I'll add that to the list of things to consider! Be Well!
