How we define ourselves

Or maybe more to the point: why do we define ourselves? I read so many discussions about how someone defines themselves or someone else and I hear many discussions about the same thing. Now I ask: why should we feel the need to define ourselves at all? Why can't we be just who we are? Do we feel the need to be this way or that way? I don't define myself as just a mother or daughter or grandmother. If you take out all those factors than how do you define yourself? Do you feel the need to say I am a writer, a computer geek, a dreamer or whatever?

I am the ordinary person, who likes things simple and and sweet, wont crave for much, but enough to survive, not envious unless looked down upon, a learner forever, a lover of music from whichever world, occassionally dabbling in areas where I dont belong, and have enough to cry enough to flood the world with my woes (he he), but yet brave enough to spell it and tell it. I often doubt myself, my intentions. I am guided by conscience - now. I use logics to condemn lol. What else, oh! yeah, I get angry when people behave rudely and selfishly. I can stand up to defend baby cubs, and baby lambs. LOL. Other than this, there is nothing to me.

The Lamb lies! He can sing and sing very well! I am the same way Vandana..simple. I don't need much and as long as I have what I need to get by I am happy.

As a youngster I was the "bad boy" then I became a respected member of society by working for a living. Now I am retired and I am a bum. How's that? When we are kids in school it seems important to be in some sort of group, geeks, bad boys, goodie two-shoes, whatever. But once you are out of school then you should simply be a human being

Good question. Now if I had a good answer, I'd be pretty darn smart

When did we start trying to define ourselves? You are right; most of this does start in school. Either we are in one group or another and everyone feels the need to be part of something. By indulging that need, we start defining ourselves to ourselves and to others. Why do we feel the need to be part of a group? Why don't we have our own group; party of one? I realize, of course, we want companionship and need others to talk to and interact with. Why can't we interacted with everyone and not define ourselves by the "group" we are hanging with?

I don't feel a need to define myself to anyone. I do it if the occasion calls for it. If asked, I'll answer..cut and dried! Whadda wanna know?

I'm not sure but think some people do to try and fit in. They believe their lives are boring and want spice in it so will even, at times, stretch the truth out or downright lie about certain things....to themselves as well as others.

I don't feel the need either and I think you have kinda gotten to the heart of my question. Number one: why do we try and define ourselves and two why do we try and define ourselves to anyone else?

Don't our choices and actions define us?? We all have control over that, so what choices and actions will you take, so that we all can know just who you are??

This is just my point. Why should anything define us? Why do we need to be defined? I don't think any one thing I do or say defines me.
