My son is crazy about mashed potato. I usually make it by stirring milk and a bit butter with salt and pepper. Do you have any other idea or creativity on mash potatoes ? Please share. Thanks

My mom always made mashed potatoes with cheese. She got in trouble at the family Thanksgiving once when she was caught stirring sliced cheese into the pot of mashed potatoes so that my sister and I would eat them!

Mmmm, I make mine that way sometimes too. But it has to be certain types of cheese like ages/hard ones. I like for it not to get too melty and stuff, so you can really taste and feel the texture of the bits of cheesiness.

Hey, why haven't I thought of putting cheese in it before ? Sounds quite yummy. I'll try both the soft one and the hard one, and see which one he likes better. THanks a lot.

Try using 2 tablespoons skim milk, 2 tablespoons of sour cream, and 2 cloves of garlic. You can gradually add equal amounts of milk and sour cream until you get the consistency that you desire. Mashed sweet potatoes are also great. Below is a recipe for mashed sweet potatoes - I also have others if you are interested. Ingredients: 1 1/4 pounds sweet potatoes, fresh medium 1 T Promise Buttery spread 1 t brown sugar, packed 2 t orange juice 1/8 t ginger, ground 1/8 t black pepper Preparation: Peel and cube the potatoes. In 3 quart saucepan, cover potatoes with wather. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer 20 minutes or unil potatoes are very tender; drain. Mash potatoes. Stir in remaining ingredients until blended. This serves 4.

Mashed sweet potatoes ? Wow...I'm beginning to like this cooking page ! My cousin has a little farm about 2 hours drive from my place, and she grows her own sweet potatoes, which he always serves to us, just plainly cooked or barbecued for us. I think I'm going to pay him a visit and bring this recipe. I bet he'll be surprised. Thanks a lot Clarinetgal.

When I was a kid my mother used to occasionally add some finely chopped raw onion to the mashed potatoes, and that tastes great! (Has to be finely chopped though, and best if you let it sit for 5-10 min before dishing up, so the "rawness" is tempered somewhat.) Then my grandson came to live with me, and he told me his mum (my daughter, where did she get this great trick?!) would put grated cheese in sometimes... I see others have suggested that too. So I sometimes put the chopped onion AND the grated cheese in. Super-yummy. I use cheddar cheese. Just as a standard I used butter and milk, like you, but it is fun to change. Aren't potatoes great! Another thing I invented myself, and that is to put a generous chunk of sour cream in when I mash them. That is a good flavor, and it's a good way to use the last of the sour cream if you have some left over that only has a few days left till it expires ;-) Cool thread, this. Thanks! I seem to be enjoying the "food and cookery" type posts a lot lately!

Mashed potatoes are really nice with some steamed green leaves mashed into them. Something like kale, turnip top or spinach. A good way of getting extra green veg into the diet too! My kids used to like carrot or parsnip mashed into their potatoes. You could also form your mashed potato into rounds and fry to ring the changes.

Perhaps maybe you could put some shredded cheese on top of the mashed potatoes. My mom uses the left over mashed potatoes and the next day she will make fried mashed potaoto patties. She will make a patty out of them and if you like you can add chopped onions and fry them they are so good! Hope this helps you! Have a nice day!

My family's favorite is when I add roasted mashed garlic and carmelized onions. I usually use canned milk that I have heated up before adding it to the potatos, it seems to make them a little richer than cold milk out ofthe fridge.

Start with a small amount and taste before adding more. I added 2 full tablespoons the first time I made them..and it was a little over powering.

Roasted garlic! Simply roast some garlic cloves in the oven until they are slightly browned and soft and mash them together with the potatoes. No need to change anything else - keep the milk, butter, salt, and pepper - just add the roasted garlic cloves. I will also add cheddar cheese to the mix sometimes.

Hello, Godmother. Yesterday, I parboiled some potatoes to make Bombay Potatoes to go with a curry. The potatoes broke up in the water, so I decided to mash them with the onions and garlic I would have used for the Bombay Potatoes. I added a little curry paste and tomato puree, then made potato cakes and fried them. They were absolutely delicious. If your son doesn't like curry, you could just do it with onions, tomatoes and garlic.

I make mine with the usual milk, butter, salt and pepper. I usually add parmesan cheese at the end. I don't know if it's appropriate for a kid but I add wasabi to my mash at times.

Actually, he got introduced to mashed potato from KFC. I live in Indonesia, so most people here prefer french fries. But my son fell in love with mashed potato from the start.

I make mine with soy milk instead of cows milk! It makes the potatoes super creamy and you can't taste the difference!

This topic makes me wanna make mashed potatoes later. =) I also use milk and butter and a little amount of salt and pepper for my mashed potatoes and I discovered a little bit of cream is also good.
